Around SBN: The Gift Of The 2003 Tigers

St. Louis vs. Pittsburgh, 22 August 2005

Mark Mulder (14-6, 3.87) vs. Josh Fogg (6-8, 5.07). Fogg's VORP is down to -1.4 for the year. I'm playing word association now: VORP... Value Over Replacement Player... Replacement... Replace... Replace...

Despite those fourteen wins, Mulder is developing into a generic starter, an okay #3 rather than one of the Big Three. He's walking lots of batters now and isn't really striking anyone out anymore or preventing homers. Daric Barton, who is hitting .335/.434/.525 at Class AA Midland despite only turning 20 a week ago, could make the Mulder trade a very nice one for the A's.

hey charlie, it's larry at Viva El Birdos, the SB Nation's cardinal site. you've got mulder pegged --- he's a nondescript innings-eater now, nowhere near as good as the record suggests. mulder has a very bizarre split going this year --- 13-1 with a 1.96 era in night games, vs 1-5 with a 7.57 era in day games. hard to imagine a breakdown that dramatic is completely random --- except that last year he had the reverse split, going undefeated in day games and getting murdered at night.

watch out for rainy games
Though relatively small in stature, I'm a big A's fan (and big Pirates fan), and I remember Mulder was TERRIBLE in the rain-sorry I don't have a stat to quote here.  I haven't followed him much this year, but I'm curious to know if that trend has continued.

Mulder
Larry: Maybe Mulder is still messed up from the time change after moving east?

that might explain it
his fastball hasn't caught up either --- he throws it on central daylight time, but there's a two time-zone lag before it finally crosses the plate

has already made us at AN practically forget Mulder.  Throw in Calero (don't look at yesterday's box!) and the promise of Barton, and the deal looks fabulous for the A's.  Now, about that Hudson deal...    :(

you're right, the trade is already a very good one. it could turn into a serious heist in a few years, though. Barton has to be considered one of the ten best prospects in baseball at this point.

Result
Bucs lose, 3-1. Jose Castillo was forced to leave the game with an injury.
