Notes on Tonight's Game

This Matt Lawton trade could get ugly in a hurry. Jody Gerut visibly had problems getting to a ball hit by Mark Loretta, then was replaced by Rob Mackowiak. Gerut is apparently day-to-day. The Padres' broadcast showed a shot of his leg, and the brace he wears is enormous. I don't know whether that means anything or not - but I wouldn't be surprised if he were shut down for a while.

On the bright side, what a performance by Brad Eldred. He reached base five times, hit three doubles and drove in the game-winning run. Single game performances rarely mean much in the grand scheme of things, but this one may be enough for Eldred to get Daryle Ward pipped.

Eldred
Charlie - You nailed it.  Eldred needs to play.  Ward has proven what he is, and what he isn't, and he's not an answer for first base.

Gerut's brace
I was sitting right on the wall in right field last night. I've never seen a bigger knee brace in my life. It was very clearly visible through his pants and took up like 2/3s of his leg. You could see he pulled up lame on the ball he failed to get to in right field because he was right on top of it and kind of pulled up short. We could definitely have an Armando Rios situation on our hands here. The best part will be when DL asks for another player from the Cubs, seeming to not know that Gerut was hurt when every single Pirates fan in the universe did.

Brace
I checked your blog - it's funny that we both described the brace as "enormous." I now can see what Gerut meant when he said the other day in the paper that the brace would be an impediment for a healthy person.

Brace
I've really never seen an athlete wear anything like that during a game. I think my friend wore one once, during recovery after she tore her ACL, but never actually DURING a game.
