The Post-Gazette reports that Brad Eldred will be out for a substantial period of time, and possibly the whole season.

Eldred is not a great prospect, but like some other Pirate fans, I'm worried about this. Craig Wilson and Sean Casey are eligible for free agency after the season. Eldred is the only first baseman the Pirates have anywhere near the majors. Dave Littlefield traded for Randall Simon, traded him... and then signed him again. Who is going to play first next year? I don't want Casey back; he's not nearly good enough that you can put up with his fragility. If Wilson's agent is still willing to listen about an extension, which is doubtful, the Pirates should be calling him.
