Pittsburgh vs. Chicago Cubs, 4 August 2006

Gorzelanny, Zambrano (MLB.com)

2:20 PM

FSNP, KDKA

Tom Gorzelanny (1-2, 5.84) vs. Carlos Zambrano (12-3, 3.26).

Carlos Zambrano is really good. The stupidness of W-L statistics aside, how awesome is it that he's going 12-3 for a team as bad as the Cubs.

Gorzelanny, who's from Evergreen Park, Illinois, is starting in front of a hometown crowd.

My brother Sam will be posting game threads - and maybe other things - starting tomorrow. I'm heading to Darmstadt, Germany for a couple of weeks. I'll still be updating whenever possible and have no reason to think I won't be able to update regularly, but I'm having Sam take over in case I'm unable to update for a day or two.

Note to Wilbur
Your link for Brian Rogers goes to Chris Rojas.

To no one in particular -- you know how DL has traded back or otherwise re-acquired players he once let go?  Is Jesse Chavez a clone of Leo Nunez, and thus qualifying as a reacquisition?  They're both super-skinny relievers.  They might even have similar stuff.  They were "born" a week apart, but I think one's a clone.

And since Nunez is pitching credibly for the Royals and is only 23, how long will it be before we talk about him like he's Chris Shelton?  Not that we don't already, but it could really magnify as Nunez matures.

Nunez & Chavez
Good call, azibuck. I have long been mystified by DL's penchant for reaquiring (and usually overpaying for) players he previously traded, waived or let slip away through Rule 5. It's only a matter of time before see Matt Stairs in a Pirates uniform again.

I don't remember: Did DL trade Leo Nunez for Mark Redman?

Who lasted a month or so, up till he got into a fight with McClendon!

It must have been his veteran presence that caused fewer fights with McClendon than we would have otherwise seen!

Unbelievable! Littlefield is just unbelievable. Benito Freakin' Santiago at age 49. Another great trade.

Hey!
How 'bout some props for the kid, eh?  That was a pretty nice performance.  Maybe his head's finally starting to cool off.
