Pittsburgh vs. Chicago Cubs, 5 September 2006

Santos, Mateo (MLB.com)

FSNP, KDKA

Victor Santos (5-9, 5.54) vs. Juan Mateo (1-2, 4.15). Hooray - it's a matchup of a fringe major leaguer and a middling prospect we saw a week ago. The real story/"story" of this game is that the Cubs can grab last place if they lose. If the Bucs manage to finish ahead of the Cubs, though, it won't really be progress. The Cubs stink and the Pirates stink, and both those facts are already painfully well established. I'd rather have the draft pick. That these two teams have to play each other so many times down the stretch is a cruel joke.

Here's the box score. Furnitz starts in right.
