-P- Nice work, Wild Things. Publicity stunt of the year.

In addition, Bonds' contract offer includes other considerations including a single king-sized room when the team is on road; 50% of all net proceeds of individual Barry Bonds/Wild Things merchandise; and The Wild Things will provide Bonds a host family if needed.

Brilliant.

-P- Ryan Doumit and Chris Duffy have been activated from the 60-day DL. No word yet on any corresponding transactions.

-P- C.C. Sabathia won the Cy Young award.

-P- The Cubs dealt Craig Monroe to the Twins for a player to be named. If the Twins are looking to insure themselves against the loss of Torii Hunter, this isn't the way to do it - Monroe made almost $5 million last year and will be eligible for arbitration again. He's a really bad player and won't be worth whatever he'd make there, so the Twins may attempt to reach a settlement with him.

-P- The Yanks and Jorge Posada have apparently agreed to a four-year deal worth at least $52 million. This may be a situation where the Yankees end up holding the bag, but Posada's a tough player to evaluate - he's 36, and as a catcher, he should be on his way out, but he just had his best season ever. One wonders what, if anything, this tells us about what the Yankees' offseason plan will be.

Posada

He's clutch and from what I've read, got a late start compared to most catchers at playing the position. He normally stays healthy and with the Yankees heading in the direction of young pitching, his experience behind the plate and around the American League will get them more wins than with a catcher that's younger and with less experience. Of the FA's on the Yankees, I really thought he was the one they would do everything to keep in pinstripes.

Cubs outfielders

The Monroe trade makes you wonder what the Cubs are doing. They didn't pick up the option on Floyd and now have traded away Jones and Monroe.
You look at the outfielders they have on their 40 man roster, and outside of Soriano and Murton, no significant MLB experience.

Me thinks the Cubs have a major trade in the works or a major free agent signing of an outfielder.

Of course, we could send them Duffy as the PTBNL for the soon departed Izturis.

I would be surprised.

That would put Soriano in RF, which they don't seem to want to do. Also, I don't know why, but I just think there are more logical destinations for Bay if he's being moved.

Posada

The Yankees almost have no choice. It's somewhat reasonable to expect slightly-sub-Posada production for a year or two. Probably not for his last two seasons, at least not as a catcher (the DH and 1B would of course be available...in fact, the Mets planned on pursuing Posada with the intention of moving him to 1B later in the contract). There was nowhere other than Posada they can get that production from: they have no internal candidates and the free agent catching class is weak, to put it nicely. The question all along was whether the Yankees would pay for Posada in dollars or years.

I think all it says about their plan is that they're doing what they do every season: patching holes, retooling, and going for it all again next year.
