Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Francisco Cordero to Reds

Ken Rosenthal reported a few hours ago that the Reds have reached a preliminary agreement (4yrs/$46m) with free agent closer Francisco Cordero:

The deal, which is pending a physical, is the largest four-year contract ever given to a closer. It includes a club option for a fifth year that can bring the total value of the package to $57 million. That's crazy money to pay a 32 year old power pitching closer, in my opinion. I think when your third best starter is Homer Bailey then there are better ways to spend $46,000,000...

Sort of interesting reaction
The general reaction on this signing seems to be negative.  The general reaction at Reds Reporter seems to be that it had to be done.  They wish it could have been for less money and less years.  They know it couldn't....  And the bullpen situation was so bad that it had to be done.  Sort of an interesting dichotomy.

What's funny
Is how everybody over there really thinks the Reds have a shot at being good next year and that a solid closer is a missing piece of the puzzle. I guess they think they're going with a three-man rotation, one-man bullpen, and letting Dunn/Hamilton/Griffey bat for everybody.

Yeah
They have to cope with Dusty too. But still, with more such deals, I find it hard to argue with the market.

Dusty
The Reds hired Dusty Baker early enough in Homer Bailly's career to blow out his arm...

They're delusional
Remember when Charlie previewed each team in the division and posted a link to it in their comments?  They really think they're just around the corner from another title.

Signed,

the delusional guy that predicted 90 wins and doesn't think we're as far away as everyone else thinks we are, in fact, there's a diary brewing in my head about it

Nature abhors a vacuum
With the departure of Dave Littlefield, someone had to assume the title of "Most Incompetent General Manager in Baseball By a Long Shot."  I am duly impressed by how fast Wayne Krivsky pushed aside Ed Wade to grab the baton.  Excellent work, Wayne, and most welcome given your status as a division rival.

There's a reason it's Comedy Central
What with Bonifay and then DL, and now Wade and Krivsky, and Hendry keeping the Cubs from realizing the benefits of being easily the wealthiest team in the division.  Not to mention the presence for much or all of the last 10-15 years of idiot and/or meddling owners in Pgh., Cincy and Houston, and the Seligs in Milwaukee.  And not one but two teams employing Dusty Baker.
