Marte most likely a yank

From what i read hes going for a prospect or two, but there was a report that the yanks offered phil hughes for marte snell and a prospect.  I highly doubt that that package was offered but shame on huntington for not jumping on it if it was available.  I just read that Jose Tabata could be involved. Hes the yanks #2 prospect at 19 years old. (once again i doubt it)

3 for 1?
If you are saying hughes for marte, snell, and a another prospect then that deal stinks. You can't even be sure hughes will be as good as snell. I think he will be, but is that risk worth two more years of ownership. Not to mention, you are going to throw in two more players. If they are going to include tabata then it is a different discussion.

Hughes
Hughes upside is to on day become Ian Snell.  That deal would be terrible for the Bucs.

Hughes
I think this is selling Hughes incredibly short.  Take off the black and gold colored glasses.

the glasses
Seriously, I based that statement on facts.  Right now Hughes is a pretty impressive prospect, and he may one day be one of the top 10 pitchers in all of baseball, but Ian Snell already is just that...

I don't even know what to say to that......
Seriously.  Top 10 pitcher in all of baseball.  Based on what?

I don't want to denigrate Snell.  I like him.  But this is going overboard.

Snell
Yeah, I may have gotten ahead of myself on that comment.  I think if Snell pitched in a better pitchers park in front of an at least above average pitcher he would be fierce, and most likely one the top ten in the league.  Right now his K/9, ERA and K/BB ratio are really good, especially for his age (25 last season).  Hughes is a whole other beast though, he's only like 20 or something and throws ridiculous stuff.  Can he keep that stuff going through a whole season, who knows?  King Felix was the most hyped pitching prospect in recent memory, and he's all over the place; one night you get Nolan Ryan the next you get Ryan Madsen.

Top 10...
is a stretch but he is arguably in the top 20 and continuing to improve IMO.  The trouble with a 3-1 trade even for a "can't miss" prospect like Hughes is the fact that we need to add more players not subtract them...especially for a prospect.  There has been a number of can't miss prospects that have barely had a cup of coffee in the majors.  If we trade Snell for unproven talent at the major league level we need a minimum of two top prospects.  His performance, service time and salary dictate that in this market.  Besides, the Yankees have such a high opinion of Hughes I don't think we get him for even the package you mentioned above.  Cahsman didn't really want Santana if Hughes was involved.  I would think Snell should be able to land a Kennedy/Tabata type package but I stil don't think Cashman would bite on that.

Curse of playing for the pirates
The fact is that we can't get full value for snell because he plays for the pirates. Who knows how good he would be if we played good defense and had league average in runs scored. We are better off keeping him for a few more years and then trading him with one year left like usual.

Cashing In
I just don't want to see the same thing happen to Snell that happened to Ollie Perez.  After that ridiculous 2004 season Littlefield would not listen to offers when Perez' value was at it's absolute highest.  Instead he later traded him as a throw-in when his value was its absolute lowest.  Another example of DL minimizing his opportunities.

more unreliable rumors
from ken rosenthal:

"The Astros told clubs Wednesday night that they were on the verge of a major deal, but details were unclear. Second baseman Chris Burke and outfielder Luke Scott have been among the most available Astros, and the team spoke with the Pirates about left-handed reliever Damaso Marte earlier this week. Rival clubs have targeted some of the Astros' young pitching as well."

probably too good to be true, but marte for luke scott anyone?

by johnnycuff on Dec 6, 2007 11:17 AM EST reply actions

Too old?
If we are going to trade Marte we should trade for minor league depth not more of what we already have, which is semi-young slightly above average outfielders.

true
but it frees us up to seriously consider one of apparently several nate mclouth offers.  just a guess but i think nate would fetch more than marte.

Tejada, not Marte
The Astros big move is now rumored to be a deal for Tejada.

and it's also rumored to be off
(via rotoworld)

"The Astros apparently believed a trade was possible Wednesday night, telling at least two other clubs that they were on the verge of a major deal. They were apparently working on a four-team trade at the time. Rosenthal doesn't believe an offer of Chris Burke, Adam Everett and a pitcher would be nearly enough for Tejada."

yeah
Yeah, deal between Astros and O's didn't work out.  But apparently that was the big move the Astros thought they were going to make.

Winter Meetings were sort of anti-climactic in general with the exception of the rather surprising Tigers/Marlins deal.
