Nate Silver's latest Lies, Damned Lies on the Top 100 prospects in the game is decidedly NOT hilarious for Pirates fans, especially the organizational rankings charts at the end. McCutcheon is the only top 100 prospect we have, and he's #47 according to PECOTA, #24 when that ranking is combined with BP's Kevin Goldstein's. Silver sees the Bucs as second-to-last in minor league prospects, second-to-last in all 25-or-under talent, and last in total talent.

It's not really surprising, though. In BA's rankings of farm system talent, the Bucs are 19th, but they get a lot of mileage out of Neil Walker and Brad Lincoln. Walker's status as a more-than-borderline prospect is slipping fast and Lincoln is just a question mark due to the surgery.

There are a half dozen or so teams in BA's rankings that have consistently drafted high in the first round for the last 5-6 years. All of those teams rank in the top 10-12 except the Pirates. So you have poor major league talent, which led to the high draft slots, plus a farm system that's failed to capitalize on the early draft picks. I'm sure many could quibble with the exact rankings, but it makes sense that the Bucs would be at or near the bottom in overall talent.
