Yesterday, MLB announced the various teams' draft representatives who will be making picks during the live broadcast (ESPN2, 2-6 p.m. on June 7! Be there or be square!)
The full list of people is here, if you're interested. Some people with a Pittsburgh connection (Steve Buechele, Jim "Son of Syd" Thrift, etc.), but I was mostly interested in who we'd tabbed to make our picks. Our duly designated reps turn out to be Steve Blass and... Trevor Gooby.
I'm a pretty serious baseball fan, but I'd never heard of the man. Since I already went to the trouble of looking him up, I figured I might as well share the fruits of my labors here.
Mr. Gooby is the team's "Director of Florida Operations", coming to the Pirates in 2005 after working as the GM for one of the Dodgers' minor-league affiliates, and he's also a member of the board of directors for the Manatee Chamber of Commerce. Not too shabby for a guy who's only 30. He's somewhat web-friendly, having given a nice interview to a blog here, and if you're willing to risk crossing the line into territory that's vaguely creepy and stalker-ish, he's got a blog about his family here.
Anyway, good luck to Mr. Gooby, who's going to get to try something we'd all give our eyeteeth to do. In the unlikely event that he's reading this, one suggestion: If you hear the name "Moskos" coming over your earphones, pretend that you've got a bad connection, and take Matt Wieters or Jason Heyward. Future generations will thank you.
