elmer dessens signed

Well we signed Elmer Dessens.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08005/846978-63.stm

If you read on it says that he is almost a lock to make the 25 man roster at the begginning of the season.  Hmm.  6 eras are locks now? Also gave some 23 year old shortstop who never played above A ball a contract.  Wow.

Who said the Pirates have been inactive this winter?

When I saw the initials E.D.,I didn't think of Elmer Dessens, I thought of erectile dysfunction which pretty well describes the Pirates offseason...

Dessens had an abbreviated stint
here in Japan with the Yomiuri Giants in 1999 as a teammate of Masumi Kuwata. Maybe the thinking is that the Pirates want to collect as many washed-up pitchers as possible who aren`t even good enough to pitch in Japan. There are still a few other cheap rejects out there.

Elmer
Dessens was great for the Reds (and my roto team) in 2002 -- a 3.03 ERA in 30 starts. Of course, it will probably be 9.09 in 2008.

The numbers on that A-ball shortstop sure don't look promising.
