Detroit Free Press: Tigers Interested in Jack Wilson (Again)
The Detroit Free Press reports. The Tigers, despite leaving James Skelton off their roster, will also look for a catcher.
That the Tigers would want Wilson is unsurprising. They tried to trade Jair Jurrjens for him in 2007, then sent Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez to the Braves for Edgar Renteria. That didn't work out, so now the Tigers are back to square one, and this time, Wilson is actually pretty likely to be available. Maybe Detroit will ask for Ryan Doumit too, but, assuming they won't give up Rick Porcello, they probably don't have the young players to acquire both Doumit and Wilson.

What about the rumors
that the Buccos are trying to acquire Treanor from the Marlins to include him in a deal with Wilson to Detroit?
Do you see that potentially happening?

I’ve been wrong before, but my guess would be no, because I don’t know how anyone could mistake Treanor for any more than an acceptable backup. If you were running the Tigers, would you be willing to give up something good for Treanor?

If they add Treanor, they get Misty May, too.
Just sayin’.

If you like delicious schadenfreude...
this topic at Primer is full of it. It’s Wilson/Detroit-related, too.

That’s one of my all-time favorite Primer threads. It’s hard to beat a guy posting under an alternate identity not only to link to his own blog, but to vouch for its credibility.

I think Jake is pretty reliable, though. He’s broken several stories very early, and he’s been referenced by some important writers.

It's a laugh a minute
Stratman, I’m sure you know the site better than I do, but his content has been reliable to me. He’s broken news before the press numerous times on Pittsburgh rumors.

Yeah, I was pretending I was him. Sorry if I wasn’t very good at it. Or sorry if you got it and I just explained a joke you had already got.

You need to post under a different name and vouch for the hilarity of your jokes. (-:

if the Tigers need a catcher with Wilson,
then why not add Ronny Ballgame to the deal?

I Agree-Ronnie + Jack for a Few Good Men
We use Treanor as a backup for Doumit. Trade Jack and Ronnie for some talent. I wonder what the Tigers have to offer?

If it happens (which it won't)
do we honestly play Bixler or Cruz at short for a whole year?
This isn’t going down unless we get some sort of shortstop….because we know we’re not getting one in free agency

It's not something to do lightly.
But I’d be willing to suck it up if we got something good back in return in a deal.
Alternately, we could try and buy cheap on a different vet who’s out of favor with his current org, like Khalil Greene in SD or Bobby Crosby in Oakland.

Here's a name
The Pirates’ web site has an article about the Wilson rumors that lists Tigers’ SS prospect Danny Worth as a guy the Bucs might target. Yeah, I know it’s Jennifer Langosch but it makes a certain amount of sense given that Detroit isn’t going to trade Cale Iorg for Wilson.
Worth isn’t exactly an exciting possibility. He was drafted in round 2 out of Pepperdine in 2007 and hasn’t made the top ten in a very bad system in either of the last two years. Offensively, he looks like Luis Cruz (who, for the uninitiated, sucks to high heaven with the bat) with a few more walks. He missed a lot of time this year, so he may have been hurt. He did advance more quickly than Bixler or Friday, so that’s something. It looks like he needs a year in AAA, though.

BA’s pre-draft writeup on him in 2007:
Worth’s steady defense and improved bat has won over scouts this spring, as he worked his way into the discussion as one of the better middle infielders available out of college this spring in a down year for the position. A three-year starter for Pepperdine, Worth hit .344 with wood last summer in the Northwoods League and has continued to improve offensively this spring, posting career highs across the board and improving his plate discipline significantly. His swing’s a bit stiff, but he has bat control and has shown the ability to drive the ball from gap to gap (he led the West Coast Conference in doubles last spring and ranked second this year), though his home run power is well-below-average. Defensively Worth shines with excellent footwork, natural instincts, sure hands and a strong arm. He makes all the routine plays and has the ability to make the big play from the hole. He’s just an average runner, but his grit and reliability make him likely to be drafted in the first three rounds.
