Around SBN: Odds On Peyton Manning's Next Home Includes Three Teams

Trade Bait

The Pirates have many big value players that many teams would want to get their hands on. For Example, Matt Capps. Matt Capps had 21 saves, and 3.02 era. he could either be an ok closer or avery good set-up man. He would fit in many teams 7 and 8 inning needs group. He could also be some teams' 9th inning option. The Mets for example, have a ok bullpen. Their bullpen would be full of vets and good young players with the acquistion of Matt Capps. These are some of the players that would be good trade bait and how many prospects the Pirates could probably get for them.

Matt Capps-3 prospects

Paul Mahlom- 3 prospects

Freddy Sanchez- 3 prospects

Adam LaRoche- 4-5 prospects depending on the team

John Grabow- 3 prospects

With the trades of 5 players the Pirates could get 16 prospects. This would renergize the Pirates farm system and they the Pirates would have enough players to not sukc too bad so they are an easy win.

This is General

This is a general outlook. I might of over-exgaraded with the amount of prospects. maybe 8-10 prospects.

prospects

i think you may have been right with maholm b/c of the way he pitched this year but the rest i think are a little high especially laroche who might be good for 2 or 3.

but you do bring up a few good names who could definitely get the pirates some much needed prospects.

i would especially focus on the relievers like grabow and capps only b/c the pirates do have some talented relievers in the system like jeff sues and there are many teams (as you said like the mets) who lack a solid bullpen

AdLa

I don’t think AdLa would be a hot winter pickup. Maybe we can get something for him near the deadline, when he actually hits the ball. But, if I recall correctly, he’ll be going into his FA year, so I doubt he would get anything of substance.

by EndlessMike on Nov 4, 2008 3:45 PM EST reply actions

LaRoche...

should probably be traded during the offseason. He sucks the first couple months of the season, and his numbers usually look terrible at the deadline.

Also, I wouldn’t bet any of our guys getting too many prospects, unless they are average prospects, and in that case I would not want them. Matt Capps could probably get us someone pretty good like a Jered Weaver from the Angels, Maholm could probably get us something like Jeffries and Escobar from the Brewers, LaRoche could maybe get us someone like Alderson from the Giants, and Grabow could get us something like Adam Miller and a PTBNL from the Indians. Freddy Sanchez has little value and I would wait to trade him.

by joegonzo on Nov 4, 2008 6:26 PM EST reply actions

In any given deal...

…the number of prospects we receive is going to be inversely proportional to the quality of those prospects. I.e. we might be able to get one really good player for Capps, or two pretty good ones, or three moderately interesting ones. It kind of depends what you’re looking for, and what the other team has to offer.

Also, keep in mind that any vet-for-prospect deal is going to create congestion on the 40-man roster, so plan accordingly before you pull the trigger.

by Vlad on Nov 5, 2008 8:24 AM EST reply actions

Right now, sure.

But if we go into wholesale rebuild, it could become an issue. We can probably cut loose five spots’ worth of roster kipple, but ten would be a lot harder.

pitching is always in demand

Seems like the Pirates have a number of quality arms, although some underperformed this year. Still, it would make some sense to trade guys who might be expensive by the time the team is competitive.

There also seems to be a shortage of 2nd basemen. If Freddy’s down year was due to injury and he’s expected to be healthy, I think there are teams who would offer value in trade.

by ol Pete on Nov 5, 2008 3:52 PM EST reply actions

SOME pitchers underperformed???

Other than Capps and Maholm…did we have ANYONE in the system that performed ABOVE expectations?

by Thunder on Nov 5, 2008 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

Sure.

Dumatrait and Burnett are two who jump to my mind right away.

by Vlad on Nov 6, 2008 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

Well...

if you consider a 5.26 ERA (Dumatrait) or a 4.76 ERA (Burnett) better than expectations…OK. The one I actually missed was Grabow.

by Thunder on Nov 6, 2008 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

Well, what DID you expect from them?

I mean, coming into the year, ZiPS had Burnett projected at 6.14.

trading freddy

the problem with trading freddy sanchez or jack wilson for that matter is that we have no one in the system to fill in for them. there is no way i would want to have bixler or cruz starting at any point next year

We've been losing 95 games a year WITH Sanchez and Wilson...

we can do that without them. Until better players come along…and we haven’t had significant changes yet…it doesn’t make any difference who is starting at 2B and SS.

by Thunder on Nov 5, 2008 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

Thunder

I have always said that we can’t afford to have the bulk of our limited resources tied up in these two guys and I would love to see us trade them while they still have some value and get some prospects in return. In addition to the money saved in salary, we could get some young talent with a high upside and begin rebuilding. Smart teams do not begin to rebuild around men like Wilson and Sanchez with little or no power and even less speed. Simply bring up whoever is in Indy and let them play. Like you said: we can lose 95 games with or without him. I choose the later in hopes of receiving some talent upon which we can build.

by Illinois Pirate Fan on Nov 6, 2008 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

Acually, it's more like...

…lose 95 with them or 105 without them. (Which still might be worth it, depending on what we get back.)

We have NOTHIN’ in the middle infield until you get down to A-ball.

by Vlad on Nov 6, 2008 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

One would hate

to trade Sanchez at an all time low. Personally, he would not fetch us a whole bunch. My suggestion, provided he is healthy is to trade Jack and let Sanchez take SS for the time being.

Granted his range is almost awful for that position, but it’s a sight better than Bixler at SS. 2B is much easier to fill and we have a few candidates in house and a few cheap options on the FA market that could pan out.

We are going to be gawd awful anyhow. Let Sanchez regroup with his Bat and show he is healthy. His value will rise, because everyone knows he isn’t an everyday SS. He’ll be traded as a 2B. Granted he won’t hit a ton of HR’s but if he get’s his AVG up his OBP will rise and tied to that should be a whole bunch of 2B’s 40-50 on a year. He’ll net us some value.

by BSpar on Nov 6, 2008 11:26 AM EST reply actions

there seems to be a fair amount of interest in Khalil Greene

He had a truly ugly season last year. If Freddy had a nagging shoulder problem last year I’ll bet most people in the business knew it. If he’s healthy, there is a shortage of 2B.

How many years is he under contract?

Is Andrew McCutchen available?

As a Royals fan, I would love to have McCutchen. Would there be anyway (from a Pirates Fan’s perspective) that we could trade for him, without including Greinke, Soria, Gordon, Moustakas, or Hosmer?

Perhaps a Big League starting pitcher and outfielder?

by KCRoyals on Nov 6, 2008 3:15 PM EST reply actions

No.

Thanks for the offer, but not interested.

by Vlad on Nov 6, 2008 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe

To get Andrew McCutchen, any team will have to pay. I don’t think the Royals will open talks for McCutchen either though.

by dasox313 on Nov 6, 2008 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

Oh...

so you want our current top prospect…but won’t consider giving up one of your young guns. I don’t think so!!!

by Thunder on Nov 6, 2008 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

That is what I was curious about...

Would DeJesus and Hochevar be enough? Too much?

by KCRoyals on Nov 6, 2008 7:29 PM EST reply actions

Definitely not too much.

That would not be enough. McCutchen is younger and his ceiling is higher than Hochevar’s and we have no use for DeJesus. I really don’t see a mathc with the Royals. He is an OBP guy and the Royals could definitely use some of that though.
