Just Curious

But is there anyone that the Pirates are NOT interested in?

Sure

Pitchers that throw strikes or cost money.

Not necessarily a good idea or a bad one.

Like almost all things, it depends on price.

Furcal is a Brave

Rosenthal has the scoop:

I would love to see the Buccos make a run at Escobar. Maholm for Escobar? Braves need another starter, we could really use a quality middle infielder to build around.

I like the idea

I don’t want to overvalue Maholm, but I really like him and he is young enough and inexpensive enough to stick around and contribute on the next Bucs playoff team. That said, Escobar is a good talent who walks a good bit, has some power and has a good glove, and would be an excellent return for Maholm. If the Braves look to move Escobar though, they might be looking for someone better than (or more proven than) Maholm in return.

Like Peavy, for example

At least that’s what Rosenthal says.

And then there are the Dodgers

This might be realistically more interesting from the Pirates perspective in how it changes the Dodgers thinking. Now that their Plan A is out the door they’re much more likely to come back calling at the door for Jack Wilson. I had started to believe that Wilson wouldn’t be traded this offseason, but this seems to increase that likelihood again.

We’ll see. That said, I’m not all that keen on the previously rumoured return from the Dodgers. Hu (or whatever his name was) and Young don’t sound like they’d be valuable pieces for the Pirates, so I say why bother. I’d rather they go for higher risk/reward if they can’t get any higher impact, upper level prospects.

Disagree

If the Pirates can get Hu and Young for Wilson, I say go for it. Sure, these two are not hitters, but neither is Jack Wilson, and the nice thing about Hu and Young is that they can play defense well (or at least Hu can; not sure about Young) and can stick around for a while at a low price while we look for replacements. Replacing Wilson’s glove is no easy task, but resigning Wilson would also be a mistake. I say the package of Hu and Young is probably our best option.

Resigning Wilson?

He’s signed for another 2 years I believe. The debate is between trading him now or waiting to see how the market develops later. I don’t think anyone is suggesting signing him to any additional contract.

I just think they can get some more inspiring return for Wilson, not that it has to be overwhelming. We have to be realistic, but we don’t have to trade him for failed prospects just to trade him.

One more option?

They could also decline his option for 2010 and then try to sign him to a lower-cost extension that’d cover that year.

I don’t expect this to happen, since any performance bad enough to make them decline the option would probably also be bad enough to make them want to cut the cord. Just throwing it out there.

Wilson has talked about retiring when his contract is up, so if the Bucs don’t exercise the option, that may be it for him.

I bet he’d find a new lease on life if he ever played on a good team.

Young isn't much of a defender.

He was horrible at 2B, which is why he got moved to the OF. He doesn’t have the mobility or range for CF, though he’s maybe average-ish in a corner. It’s hard to know for sure, since he hasn’t spent much time there.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting something like this today. I’m writing up a post now.
