Cardinals vs. Pirates, 23 April 2008

St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates, Apr 23, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

Todd Wellemeyer and Ian Snell kick off a two-game set at 7:05 at PNC. As always when Snell pitches against the Cardinals, watch out for Albert Pujols, who's 9-for-16 lifetime with four homers against Snell.

Scary start...

...great ending!

I’d also like to thank the Texas Rangers for making me feel a little better about the Bucs’ last few drubbings. Ah, the sweet smell of schadenfreude...

.500 or bust...

Re: Texas Rangers

I run a Texas Rangers fan site, and I was coming here to post something. Much to my surprise, there was already a Texas Rangers remark here. :)

Anyway, I was going to post this link. Pirates fans might find it amusing.

I feel for you...

... it kinda seemed that the Tigers were taking out the frustrations of their dismal first week on the Rangers.

I don't know a ton about Kevin Thompson,

but he should be on the mlb team right now. Can anyone tell me why he isn’t occupying the bench OFer spot instead of Nyjer Morgan? I know this has been talked about a lot before, but I was hoping some Nyjer fan out there will be able to make a good argument for me.

I'll play Devil's advocate

Nyjer is a significantly better defender than Thompson, and his baserunning gives him added tactical value. Thompson is basically the same type of hitter as Gomez and Dougie M and Paulino: decent average and doubles power, but not a big thumper. As such, he’d be redundant on the team, with the way the roster is currently constructed. He made notional sense as a platoon partner for Nate this spring, but since Nate’s hitting .335/.412/.484 against LHP so far this year, that isn’t really a pressing need at the moment.

That said, once I go back to being myself, I’d probably still make the switch.

That is a good argument, though

Are Nyjer’s baserunning abilities that much more than Thompson’s? Apparently he can outrun him in the 60, but can Nyjer steal second in a big situation or take third on a single to right frequently?

Hard to say.

Nyjer is definitely faster in terms of straight-line speed, but he doesn’t seem to get good reads/jumps, at least to my eyes.
