Pirates 5, Phillies 1
Following on the heels of a week of horrible baseball and the release of Matt Morris, this was a refreshing display of competence. Paul Maholm walked four batters, but he had a 99-pitch, complete game two-hitter. Meanwhile, Nate McLouth hit two homers, raising his season total to six, and Jose Bautista had three hits, a stolen base, and a great defensive play. There were no errors.
Was it just coincidence that the Pirates played like this after Morris was released? Almost certainly. But, as Azibuck pointed out in the comments to the game thread, this one certainly felt different.

I didn't watch this beginning to end
but I flipped back for significant portions during the pens game. The Bucs also managed a decent offensive output against a pretty good pitcher.
They really should be able play like this more often, and hopefully as the season goes on they will.

Has Maholm turned the corner?
Sensational performance by Paul and it’s not like it’s a fluke one-time thing. If Gorzy can get back on track we may have three pretty damn good pitchers. And I am still stubbornly clinging to my slowing dying hopes for Zack. There’s no shortage of good pitchers who were not flamethrowers – they just knew how to pitch. Maybe we can take the extra $10 million next year (Morris’ money) and hire Maddux as a pitching coach. Having mentioned Morris from what I read both sides acted in a class manner here. Is this another sign of improvement in management.?
Finally, continual kudos to Nate the Great.!
Can Steve Pearce pitch? – he needs to be here.
