Starting
Paulino gets the nod.
Freddy & Jack... not so much.

What's with the team trying to get doubles and getting thrown out? Thrice in two games now.

Nady on 3rd
1 out.
Time for the "Bucco's black hole" to do something.
Biased Fan
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
And LaRoche
First pitch swinging, grounds out.
The black hole comes through again!

Hanley Homers!
Looks like we're in for a rough night.
Um...
1 home run allowed.
And then 3 K's.
What to make of that?
Biased Fan
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Yeah...
It's never fun to log in to check the game in the first and find your pitcher has already allowed a homer.

BTW
Just got back from PETCO. I swear, I always go to see the Padres when Peavy is pitching and it's no fun because the ball never gets out of the infield. I don't think I've ever been at a game he was pitching where more than five total runs were allowed.

Sigh...
I envy the teams with a solid pitching staff.

well, and an enormous ballpark. Ian Snell would put up a 3.00 ERA there, too.

3Ks in one inning?
that's more than Duke's K total for an entire month
I think this will get to the point...
where Doumit is out there nearly every day, either at catcher or at a corner, just because there won't be any other way to generate offense. I'm afraid the last inning - groundout, groundout, strikeout - will be such a common occurrence that the team won't have any other choice.
BAY AND LAROCHE SHOULD NOT BAT 3-4 EVER AGAIN

I agree
at least not until they prove that they still have the ability to pick up hits.

Four Ks in the first two innings, can't complain about that.

Fun fact:
Bay's OBP is over .400 on the year.
It doesn't seem possible.

LaRoche
is very bad at this "cooking" thing you speak of.

Aw Geez
LaRoche 2 for 21.....another crummy April......can we call up Pearce please?
nope
his 2 hits were on march 31...

it's up to Jose and RoPaul
to cook something up.....i'm not holding my breath here
Yeah that was nice.
We haven't seen Bay take a base in a while let alone 3rd. I guess that's because he hasn't been on base all that much.
False!
See above. OBP over .400. It's unbelievable, but it's true.

Unless
you also meant last year. Actually, that makes more sense.

Talk about miscommunication
by the Marlins......alright Gomez take Nady home
Think the media pundits sayin
they're gonna be the first 1 seed to be elimanted lid a fire on their butt?
UGH!
Jack Wilson would've got him.....Rivas stinks at Short!
Yeah.
He's just an all-around bad player. The Pirates should have stuck with Olmedo, actually. I'd feel a lot more comfortable with him out there.
by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 5, 2008 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Whee!
Seven Ks.
I just picked up Maholm for a spot start in a 12-team league. Would it be ridiculous to consider keeping him?
Yeah.
You're right.
I hate that I have to consider that. Then again, I only picked him up because he was starting against Hendrickson.
by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 5, 2008 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Not a bad reason
to pick him up.
But given the Bucco's offense, he'd have to pitch a shut-out to get a win.
Biased Fan
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Maholm's 7 Ks
are more than what Duke will have through Memorial Day (running joke)
I was betting...
that EVEN THE PIRATES could score some runs against Hendrickson. We'll see how that pans out.
But yes, I'm enjoying the Ks.

Rivas
looks like Daryle Ward if you ignore the fact he's not heavy. even the same #

by Raise the Jolly Roger on Apr 5, 2008 8:29 PM EDT reply actions
That's what I was thinking to!
To bad Rivas can't hit HRs or really do much else
it's really
just Mclouth and Nady out there isn't it? Just a whole bunch o' nothin' from these guys...(you have to take advantage of a quality start by maholm, right?)
Yep
Especially with Paulino getting the start over Doumit.

Probably not much.
They'd want to get rid of the contract.

Don't make it sound too appealing, there, Kent...
by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 5, 2008 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Hanley got nailed!
Smells like payback time for Hendrickson! Bench-clearer brewing?
90 pitches now for Maholm
This is a huge at-bat coming up btw Maholm and Jacobs
Are they earned?
There was the error early in the inning.
by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 5, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah.
They'll be earned. The error just caused the runner to move up a base, it didn't help the Marlins avoid an out.
by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 5, 2008 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions
I may stay
to see if Hendrickson will threw a brushback next innng
4 run deficit
with this offense?
They need to get to Hendrickson now!

Not good enough...
we needed him to drive a run or 2 in...
Biased Fan
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
One problem
Bay was the lead runner, it's not like he ever takes the extra base, even if the CF isn't going to make a play on him.
What's with
Batista breaking bats? How many has he cracked this year?
Couldn't Bautista
at least get it to the outfield to drive in a run.
I mean... infield fly rule?

And a new pitcher

I believe I predicted
we would play well this series and get swept. Looking like I was half right.
Maholm's blow up
is brutal! Considering he was having a career game and Zach Duke's pretty much did the same thing the other night.
At least Duke
lasted 5 innings before being misused.
If you take out Maholm before, he doesn't last 5.
That's not good for a starter.
Biased Fan
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Everyone else
in the NL Central (save Houston) won.
It'd be nice to be able to keep pace... even if we are just 4 games in.
Biased Fan
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
So yet another
game where the starter either gets an L or a ND. Wonder how long it will take before someone in the rotation gets the first W...
If it goes much longer
we might as well start a pool on it.
Biased Fan

Snell will win tomorrow
3-3 heading back to the Burgh is not that bad but it sure could've been better
Sigh.
Something else we should start a pool on: How long until Meek gets offered back to Tampa?

I pick
tomorrow.

The one good thing he did
was to aim high and inside on the 1st squeeze attempt. Just like you're taught to do.

What would we get
if we offered the entire bullpen other than Capps to Tampa Bay?
Well...
It's beginning to look like the only way a starter will get a win is to pitch a complete game. Just hope Snell or Gorzo doesn't have to throw 140 pitches to do it.
Meek
reminds me of Josh Sharpless without all the HR's. The guy you want in the game when it's just close enough to get away...
Marte...
in the 6th!!! Can you say "doghouse" boys and girls.
"Screw you guys. I give up. Marte, get out there."
"But it's..."
"Whatever. Just go."

Pearce really needs to be up here.
Play him anywhere, it doesn't matter.
If he struggles, he struggles.
I mean, how much worse than LaRoche's .095 can he be?
Biased Fan
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
It's only April 5th
believe me it will get worse before it gets better
You mean worse than...
Your #3 batter is hitting .167.
Your #4 batter is hitting .091, and doesn't have a hit this month.
Your middle infield is currently Luis Rivas & Chris Gomez.
Your best player in the minors is currently blocked by the aforementioned #4 hitter at 1st base & one of the best players on the team right now (at least in terms of his play) in the OF.
Your third baseman is just plain bad.
Your best catcher is in a platoon-role.
Only McLouth, Nady & Doumit have even been partially good.
Your starters can't go 6 innings... and give up hits & homers like no other.
Your bullpen (save for Yates, Grabow & maybe Capps) has been bad. Osoria has been alright, I guess, and haven't seen enough of Dumatrait.
Coming into today, you're leading K-guy was John Grabow, with 4.
Is it even possible to be worse than that?
Biased Fan

Oh, and if you were planning on replying
no need.
It was rhetorical. And maybe sarcastic too...
it is the Pirates, after all.
Biased Fan

LaRoche needs a day off tomorrow
Start Minkie at 1st
Do the Pirates lead the league...
in errors this season? They seem to be working hard to get that mark.
Biased Fan
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
If you add
mental errors...we're definitely leading the league and it's not close.
MLB.com stats
In 5 games, the Phillies have 7.
Coming into today, we have 6. Plus 2 today, and the lead is ours.
Congratulations, Pirates players! You're winning at something.
Biased Fan
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
One of the problems
with the Pirates at this point in the game is: does a 1-2-3 inning mean we've given up or trying our hardest?
Some of both...
Nady & McLouth are probably giving up. No reason to try when the rest of the team isn't.
Bay & LaRoche already have. They just want out.
The others... they're trying their hardest.
Biased Fan
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Phew.
Jumped the gun there, fortunately.

9th inning
Gomez, pinch-hitter, McLouth.
Need 4 runs to tie.

I'm also curious
what Andrew's whispered to Maholm RIGHT before he threw that meatball for the GS....
Because
if you save his energy until the Pirates are actually good again and in need of a hit from him... he'll be dead.
Biased Fan
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Brilliant...
All 3 of the called strikes on Rivas were like down the heart of the plate.
Seriously, at the worst you miss and strike out... but how do you not take a swing when you're down by 4 and down to your last out? He swung once, and saw 3 other strikes go right past him.
Biased Fan
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
sounds like
every at bat by LaRoche and Bay....oh AND Paulino, though only with men on base and down runs...
