Already a late start...
and now it’s delayed even longer.
Does it look like it might start soon? Maybe?

So... it might be a stupid question, but...
what’s the rotation looking like now?
Snell, Gorzo, Duke, Maholm, Dumatrait?

I think that’s it… In unrelated news, I’m watching the Pens/Flyers game and they just showed a trailer for the upcoming Mike Myers movie The Love Guru. Dear God it looks freaking horrible.

If someone ISNT watching pens game
let us know when the bucs get underway so i dont have to keep flipping back and forth only to see “in my own words” with John Russell—possibly most boring thing ever

The good news is
...we have a competent back-up catcher (who calls a good game)
The bad news is he was our starter f/two years running
Well,
He ain’t been calling good games this year. The Pirates are something like 4-10 when Paulino starts, and 14-10 when Doumit starts. Aside from Pirates giving up .70 run less with Doumit catching, and more steals when Paulino catches.
Well, if he's no good,
why would the old regime keep him in games instead of starting Doumit last year? Surely they weren’t that incompetent?
Definitely not.
They saw that A-Ram had hit his ceiling and shipped him out for what they could.
They were amazing at trading players for relievers… and everyone knows you need relievers.
They acquired All-Star form vets like Jeromy Burnitz, Joe Randa & Sean Casey, and dealt away (or let leave) destined-to-be-nobodies like Bronson Arroyo & Chris Young & Chris Shelton & etc…
Definitely not incompetent. In fact, probably the best thing since sliced butter.
:)

to be fair
Shelton has had all of 2 months in his career. The rest has been average at best, including not playing last year. If he blossoms, so be it, but I’m not buying the whole Shelton thing right now.

Of AAA pitchers & John Van Buren
(or whatever his last name was)
Listen to a lot of sports talk radio up here – the Yanks signed (f/like 34 million) Kei Igawa as a consolation prize after Boston signed “what’s his name” from Japan.
After another lousy start, most fans are wondering if Igawa will ever perform at the big league level like he was performing at AAA or in Japan.
One commentator noted that in Japan, Igawa got a lot of outs w/an average to slightly above average change-up. The commentator said that an average to slightly above average change-up will also get out a lot of AAA batters out.
HOWEVER, the commentator noted, it won’t do much good against Major League hitters.

Ladies and Gentlemen

In the words of Mike Lange
The Kitchen is CLOSED!
I really like that pitch
Dumatrait throws a STRAIGHT change…but I bet it looks exactly like a fastball to the hitter
I guess we've found...
Dumatrait’s limit…80 pitches…goodbye lead.
Wait, what?
I go out to the kitchen to make a cocktail, and…?
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. -- HST
Should've pulled Dumatrait...
The bullpen isn’t exactly shut-down the opponent good, but the starters are always in too long, and this happens like every game.
The starter implodes in the 6th inning. Again.
Story of the Pirates season so far?
The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
I know what you are saying,
and I have complained about that before…I think Russell sucks and managing the starting pitching. But tonight feels a little different. I think he is still throwing well, and if his spot doesn’t come up in the order I’d consider throwing him to start the seventh.
If he does come up this inning
the score will be at least tied, since he’s up 7th in the inning.
Yeah, not watching but I get that from the comments...
(about Dumatrait still throwing well, that is)
it just appears that this same thing happens way too often.
Of course… there’s no guarantee that the bullpen doesn’t do the same thing…

The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Why Grabow?
I mean that two ways:
1 - why, Grabow, did you pitch to Pujols?
2 - why… don’t we just blow the pen up and start over. No problem with Grabow, but obviously Russell’s lost faith in Yates. We need a dependable righty besides Capps.
Yeah...
but Grabow is pretty effective against righties. I know ideally you’d love to have the good right hander to bring in there, but Grabow owning the eight has worked well for this team so far.
And it is tough to walk Pujols and put another runner on there
More dead horse beating...
We could use a reliever who, coming in to tonight had:
14 appearances, scored upon in only one of them
.87 WHIP
13/4 K/BB
Under 25
And got a win tonight after another 2/3 scoreless.
It really annoyed me when people on message boards dismissed Nunez and defended the Santiago trade. It’s nice to be proven right so conclusively, I guess.
by Charlie Wilmoth on May 13, 2008 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Not replying to that comment
I don’t know why I do this, but I always wonder what might have been. Not just in a “if we had Nunez” way, but how other dominoes might fall if we’d never done this or that. And like, I’m following every start Todd Redmond makes now, for the same bizarre reason. He fanned 9 the other night, by the way.
But yeah, I’d like to get a look at Nunez. The numbers, and his age, make me think he’ll be a useful guy for a long time, and will probably be thought of as closer material, which is a nice trade chip to have.
The Albaladejo trade last year interested me for the same reason.

Salas...
welcome to the majors.
Your first daunting task… 1st & 2nd, 2 outs… some guy named Pujols at the plate.
The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Walk Pujols.
Bases loaded, 2 outs for Ryan Ludwick.
The Utah Jazz

No pictures
of either on Gamecast. lol.

Gameday has pictures of both
but at the time of the at-bat, they didn’t have one for Mientkiewicz.

Extras!
Again!
And with our solid bullpen & amazingly deep bench…
no, wait….

Funny...
I was just thinking, “I forgot to mention a balk.”
Sad how used to losing we’ve become.

Holy crap...
A 1-pitch at bat not ending in an out.
See Bix & CGz… that’s how it’s done.
The Utah Jazz

Yep...
now Jason-ity & Paulino need to come through.

I don't think
...there’s enough vodka in the world for me to get to the 12th inning…..we need to win NOW!

Fortunately,
I have a large supply of beer, so I can make it through a few more innings

Did we seriously
not see that coming?
IBB for Jason-ity… 1st & 2nd with 1 out for Paulino.

Maybe Paulino

Me too.
About me be wrong, not you.
Though we’re probably wrong about the same thing …

Is Armageddon coming
RoPaul with 2 RBI hits in 1 game?
Yeah
and 3 more to catch up to that dude from Houston… also, I wish I was drunk :(
.500 or bust...

Oh yeah, Berkman...
he’s on my fantasy team. :)
The Utah Jazz

Almost the grand slam I predicted...
but instead, Paulino doesn’t have to bunt, and the 4 runs cross the plate with only 1 out instead of 2!

Just a fair warning...
your frau (or shack-up) will likely not buy the “I’m taking one for the team” line very long.

Will it be Capps in the bottom of the inning?
It’s not a save situation…

Need to get him work
and besides, you can never be too careful if you’re a Pirates fan

Agreed...
I have to get to bed.
Work at 7:45 tomorrow morning. :(

All I can say is
if it’s on his catching hand perhaps he can have it splinted and be back in a relatively short time. A “fracture” could be anything from a painful hairline fracture to something much worse.

...is ondeck.

Rivas with the hit...
he’s on first, Black Hole on 3rd… Mientkiewicz up.

i would rather have had more runs
and the inning still going and me missing the end of the game because I’m sleeping, than have the team hit into another DP.

saw it coming
still can’t complain at all about the 4 spot tat inning

Another good win-
I`m glad we`re not using Ron Villone in our `pen.
Hopefully we can get to .500 next time out.
Dumatrait
pitched very well. Even in the 6th…he inexplicably completely pitched around Ludwick, which was weird. But then he painted the outside corner with a fastball called for ball one against Glaus, and then his second fastball caught a lot of the plate (pretty much down the middle) and Glaus got good wood on it. He also struck out Pujols on a nice changeup before Ludwick came to the plate.
He quickly got ahead of Ankiel and got him to softly bounce to second on a slider, which somehow got through for a single because we were shifting him to pull. Then he got a groundball out to first to end the inning.
So basically he was too careful with Ludwick (I think he went down 3-0 on three straight changeups falling out of the zone), and he made the mistake of just trying to pump a fastball to Glaus to get even at 1-1.
Even with that, he turned in 6 innings and 3 runs—very acceptable.
Agreed.
Solid outing… a bit of trouble in the 6th, but kept us in the game.
