Keep Bixler?

When Jack comes back (like that 24 reference?) should we keep Bixler and release/demote Rivas? Bixler is looking better so maybe more time in the majors could help him.

Rivas looks like a lost cause right now so if they see some hope for him, send him down to get his game going. Else let him go.

Also Freddie might need more time off or a possible stint on the DL is upcoming. Bixler could fill in at 2B. What do you think?

I don't see Bixler as more than a UT IF.

As such, there’s no harm in keeping him as a backup.

We sure wouldn’t miss Rivas, if he were gone.

100% agree

You really would only demote Bixler if you think he can develop his bat more and benefit in the long run, and it just doesn’t seem like that is going to happen.

He’s much better defensively than Rivas now that Bix has shaken off the jitters, and actually won’t be a horrible utility infielder, although he can’t hit. I would like to see Rivas released.

With Doumit on the DL

and a scrub Indy catcher surely to be called up I’d say DFA Rivas (bringing back the 40-man to 39) keep Bix who’s doing a great job defensively then sign a quality back-up catcher and DFA that Indy scrub catcher.

There aren't many quality backups just floating around.

I think that absent a trade, our catching situation probably is what it is, at least for this year. We can revisit it in the offseason.

Ronnie can play every day

and hopefully Chavez won’t see the field too much. He is a poor option if we needed a pinch hitter, but Russell probably wouldn’t think about using the backup catcher for that anyway.

I would love for the Bucs to roll the dice and just go with Paulino as the only catcher. If he gets hurt, they get screwed for one game with Minky behind the plate…so what? That would leave room to call up Thompson as a good bench bat.

Chavez is

Doumit’s replacement. He does have ML backup experience…so he’s not quite a scrub.

Bixler

He needs to go back to Indy and work on his hitting. I think we’d be better off with Gomez as the utility guy, and bringing up Pearce or Thompson would give the team a better bat on the bench.

Bix

I live in Indy, and I loved watching Bixler last year so selfishly I’d love to see him here. Seems like a waste to let him just sit when he may need the confidence boost of beating up AAA pitching.
