Pirates vs. Cubs, 16 May 2008

Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs, May 16, 2008 2:20 PM EDT

Tom Gorzelanny vs. Sean Gallagher at Wrigley. Sorry for the late game thread -- the Friday afternoon game took me by surprise. This one starts now, at 2:20. Here's the box.

C'mon Buccos!

I have a good feeling about today’s game for some reason.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by phillybucco on May 16, 2008 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

These may be the best seats I've had to a game ever.

Nanika Ga Okoru!

Oh, and remember, folks: Alfonso Soriano is NOT batting leadoff. He's batting first.

by daver on May 16, 2008 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

Haha,

well, I guess that feeling was just gas…

Yeah, rough start for your guys.

More like

one great young pitcher and one injured young pitcher.

by Thunder on May 16, 2008 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Nahhh

Gorzo’s not hurt…he’s just getting lit up like a Christmas tree.

by Thunder on May 16, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

Welp

Time to go back to work…. this f’ing sucks.

.500 or bust...

by phillybucco on May 16, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

What is WITH us and the Cubs?

by EmmaOMG on May 16, 2008 2:37 PM EDT reply actions

They’re under our skin somehow… we’re scared of them, and Gorzo is also hurt and throwing like a little leaguer.

I looked forward to this game all day, and now I don’t even want to watch the rest.

.500 or bust...

So, wait, is Gorzellany really hurt?

Nanika Ga Okoru!

by daver on May 16, 2008 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, OK. I've noticed he's been struggling so far this year.

Nanika Ga Okoru!

by daver on May 16, 2008 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

There's also speculation

Jim Tracy wrecked Gorzo’s arm by leaving him out for 100+ pitches for a bunch of starts in a row late last year.

by EmmaOMG on May 16, 2008 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, how very Dusty Baker of him.

That’s sad to hear. You guys probably know this, but Gorzellany is a Chicago guy, so I’ve always kinda rooted for him (even though he was apparently a Sox fan).

Time

to pull Gorzo… he shouldn’t be pitching.

.500 or bust...

by phillybucco on May 16, 2008 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

Hey

Let’s leave Gorzo out there even longer…

.500 or bust...

by phillybucco on May 16, 2008 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

good Lord.

I think it’s time to not only pull him from the game, but shut down Gorzo for a few starts. he’s throwing batting practice put there.

by gonfalon on May 16, 2008 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

I was willing

to write the first homer off as Soriano being searing hot right now, but 3 in two innings? That’s Brett Myers territory :D

.500 or bust...

by phillybucco on May 16, 2008 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

I'm watching this game

and I can’t see what sign Paulino is flashing when he calls for the gopher ball. I’ve seen Gorzo throw 3 and a couple that were fairly close.

by Thunder on May 16, 2008 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

how does Gorzo look?

for those who are ‘stuck’ at work, can you comment on the speed and/or movement, or lack thereof, of his pitches?

by gonfalon on May 16, 2008 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

He's not

fooling anyone. There’s been a bunch of good cuts…so movement must be minimal in the batter’s eyes. Speed’s nothing real special, but not super bad either.

by Thunder on May 16, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

He’s not exceptionally wild… the balls just don’t appear to have any zip. After the first pitch homer, he threw 4 straight balls. I think he’s psyched out along with being lame.

.500 or bust...

by phillybucco on May 16, 2008 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

thanks, phillybucco and Thunder

it’s too bad the Pirates can’t also bat against Gorzelanny for this game… we’re thru 4 innings, and only Bixler has a hit?

by gonfalon on May 16, 2008 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Gorzelanny vs the Cubs:

Start 1: 2.1 IP 6H 7R 7ER
Start 2: 2.2 IP 6H 7R 7ER
Start 3(so far): 2 IP 5H 6R 6ER

.500 or bust...

by phillybucco on May 16, 2008 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

So who hits

the HR this inning before Gorzo reaches his limit.

by Thunder on May 16, 2008 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably the pitcher the way this game is going

.500 or bust...

by phillybucco on May 16, 2008 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Hope

Osoria is ready to eat about 4 innings today.

by Thunder on May 16, 2008 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

Just got here.........

a few thoughts:

1. I hate the Cubs
2. I’m glad I can see this game on WGN
3. Gorzo, please get somebody out!
4. I hate the Cubs

the Soriano homer (part 2) was garbage. Routine pop up…that basket thing is a joke

I'm listening to the game via the Internet...

...but I heard the home run landed in the first row and bounced back into the basket.

a shutout inning from Gorzo... go figure.

let’s see if the Pirates’ offense gets shut out again this inning….

by gonfalon on May 16, 2008 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe we can take a mulligan on the first 2 innings?

.500 or bust...

by phillybucco on May 16, 2008 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

2 shutout innings... so does JR let Gorzo bat this inning, or pinch hit for him?

I would have pulled him in the 2nd inning, but that’s why I’m not a manager….

by gonfalon on May 16, 2008 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

not only does he stay...but bunts

what, exactly, is the point of bunting down 6-0?

by Raise the Jolly Roger on May 16, 2008 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Gorzo

hits about .050 when he doesn’t bunt, so what difference will it make.

by Thunder on May 16, 2008 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Good job Bixler

Wouldn’t want to wait for your pitch or anything…

seriously

how bad do we look to Cubs fans? say what you want about the team in general but they are a whole new level of Suck against these guys

but

it’s not even like we’re even close to THIS bad. The Cubs are good but not like the second coming or anything. I don’t get it.

On the board

I felt guilty going golfing today during the game, but I got back in time to see the first pirates run :)

Freddy

had quite the battle at that last at-bat, but of course, it ended pathetically.

BTW

That 2nd Soriano HR was directly in the basket, not in the seats, so yeah, it was BS.

.500 or bust...

by phillybucco on May 16, 2008 4:27 PM EDT reply actions

OK, yeah, it was. I just watched in on Gameday.

Still, a bit of a stretch for Mr. Jolly Roger to call it a “routine pop up”, don’tcha think?

If I may say so...

I absolutely hate early games.
Especially one’s that start at 12 PM.
I was looking forward to Pirates game for this evening… instead, I’ll have to waste time doing absolutely nothing.

Game.

Yet again, the team gets within 1 game of .500 and then fails to win.
