The Pirates should sign Derrick Turnbow...

The Pirates should sign former All-Star relief pitcher Derrick Turnbow, who was just DFA'd by the Brewers.

Why?  He has a power arm (265 K in 257 2/3 career innings), which is in line with Huntington's philosophy.  But mainly because he's a perfect fit for the Pirates' bullpen.

Star-divide

Just look at his 2008 numbers – 12 hits and 11 runs in 6 1/3 innings and a 13:5 BB:K ratio (for a 15.63 ERA and a WHIP of nearly 4!), plus the league is hitting .414 against him.  And maybe we can then trade Matt Capps to the Yankees for a case of sunflower seeds, so Turnbow can compete with Evan Meek for the closers' job.

Granted, Turnbow hasn't made any errors this year, which may be a deal-breaker.  However, at the plate he has struck out in half of his career at bats, so I think the Pirates should take a chance on him anyway.

I know we're lowballing here

but would he take a mere $10 mil a year? OK, OK, $12 mil. Alright, $14, but that’s as high as we … what the hell, in for a dime, in for a dollar. $20 mil it is.

Forget the lowballing

Let’s offer him partial ownership!

I don't think this would be in the best interest of a team who is rebuilding.

Why sign a guy, who you know will require a nice contract due to his history? The Pirates need to start from the ground up. They should be trading players like Bay and Wilson and looking for good young players or the organization will never turn around.

I am a Cubs fan living in PA, but I do attend games at PNC when the Cubs aren’t playing and would mind seeing a good team when I come. I’m trying to make this as non offensive as possible.

I just don’t think a guy who is struggling like Turnbow would be a good sign for a team who is rebuilding.

Seriously?

In the back end of the bullpen?

Way to pick your spot to attempt a random Pirates insult—this may be the teams biggest strength and is quite possibly the only aspect of the game the Bucs do better than the Cubs right now.

And no screaming about Carlos Marmol, we know he is awesome.

Turnbow agreed to be demoted to AAA

and stays with Milwaukee. Truly, it is the Pirates’ loss.
