What is with the teams batting pitchers 8th? Is it just something about the Pirates?

Well
in this case Kendall is a pretty good on base guy and Weeks has some power, so they may think the benefit of having someone on base for Weeks is greater than having a better hitter in the 8 spot. Who knows if it means much?
I wonder if it has anything to do with stats? For example…I wonder if the #9 spot in a national league order leads off an inning more often than the #8 spot of the course of time? But, even if there were any validity there, that would probably be affected by switching the quality of hitters in each spot.
As long as it's not a
“hey look, we’re facing the Pirates. Bat the pitcher 8th!” type thing.
Because, you know… the time to do something crazy is when you’re facing the Pirates.

Nah, the Brewers have been hitting Kendall eighth for a while.

Wonder if for 1 game
Nate can bat cleanup? Couldn’t hurt
Nady *should* bat cleanup tonight -- he is a career .538 hitter vs. Sheets
career vs. Sheets, the Pirates’ starting lineup is:
Sanchez .231 (3/13)
McLouth .167 (1/6)
Bay .391 (9/23, 1 HR)
LaRoche .250 (6/24, 4 2B, 1 HR)
Nady .538 (7/13, 2 HR)
Eyechart .250 (2/8)
Paulino .333 (1/3)
Gomez - (0/0)
Snell .000 (0/3)
FWIW, Jack Wilson is a career .310 (18/58) hitter vs. Sheets, and Doumit is at .375 (3/8, 1 2B, 2 HR).
sorry about that!
I didn’t mean to sound like I was yelling or deriding you, Andy… I actually thought your post read ‘Nady can bat cleanup’... whoops!
I wonder when Chavez will get a start at C?
he’s a journeyman, but he can’t do much worse than Paulino, can he?
plus, Chavez’s OPS this year is currently a stellar 3.000 (in one at-bat)!
If he is any worse than Paulino...
I’m digging my shinguards out of the closet and calling NH tomorrow.

I guess the Bautista batting 2nd experiment
FAILED miserably
Thankfully
it only took 1 game to find out that it wasn’t working.

I hate to say it...
because I liked Jose as promising prospect( I know, sue me)...but I wish him gone yesterday now.
His at-bat last night with Freddy on second and no outs was oh so typical of him. Swing for the fence instead of at least making contact and moving the runner. :/
by Hitman Easler on May 21, 2008 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions
If Jose doesn't learn proper batting fundamentals
like that one then he’ll never care to learn
The thing is, Bautista may have been a very promising prospect. We’ll never know how much his career was messed up by the Rule 5 draft and that anger-injury he suffered the year before.

If not, here we go just in case.
Ian Snell, your mama is of questionable moral character.
Hope that helps.
.500 or bust...
hopefully he stays pissed for the next 6 innings
I doubt the Bucs can hit anything off Sheets
Good.
It should. We’ve allowed a pretty big amount of pitchers hit against us this year.
.500 or bust...
Instead of batting
the opposing team should just hand Paulino the ball, and let him throw it straight up in the air somewhere in the infield.
.500 or bust...
Paulino.
Mr. One pitch out when Bixler isn’t playing?

Offended, Charlie?
Blass:
“Even the name, blog, lends itself to irresponsible journalism. BLAGH (in stupid, scratchy voice).”
Ha, sorry I missed it.
Unfortunately, there is a lot of irresponsible journalism on blogs. And the word “blog” is funny. I can’t deny it.

What was the context, btw? Why was he talking about blogs?
by Charlie Wilmoth on May 21, 2008 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions
If I recall
it was about Yost and rumors of his ousting after the Red Sox series or something…
.500 or bust...
Oh yeah, I saw that. Glad I ignored it. :)
by Charlie Wilmoth on May 21, 2008 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions
What are you guys talking about?
The story here is that a mostly political blog, badgerblogger, posted that sources close to the team report that Yost will be fired, et cetera. The jsonline Brewers beat reporter was getting off a plane and people were calling him and he ended up posting that that blog was reporting what it did. Not much later he posted that he had checked with the team and that they said it wasn’t true. The massive hoopdeedoo was that Haudricourt, the reporter had actually mentioned the other blog. I didn’t see it as a big deal and people are pouring out hate.
There’s no hate here, except, I guess, for a couple of jokey references to Steve Blass being old-school. The only person to use the word “idiot” in this thread is you.
by Charlie Wilmoth on May 21, 2008 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions
sorry if I wasn't clear
I was talking about elsewhere that people were upset that I thought it was an artificial controversy.
Got it. Yeah, if people are blaming the reporter, that seems pretty dumb.
by Charlie Wilmoth on May 21, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Apparently
Yost got really mad about it and made a statement either yesterday or today, per Steve Blass.
I didn't even hafta see it
(watching Gamecast) to know that LaRoche took a loooooong swing to whiff there.

Snell
might have to provide the offense on his own.
The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
How old
is Counsell, anyway? The guy has put himself a good steady Major League career together.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. -- HST
Don't say that...
no the Pirates are gonna go get him to be their starting SS of the future.
The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Could he be worse
than Bixler or Rivas?

If he's starting full-time
after Jack is traded, it could potentially maybe be worse than having one-pitch out & Rivas on the bench. Maybe.
The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
I'm not
suggesting we even consider Counsell. I’m just sayin’, is all.
I think Counsell has been a steady, every-day-play-me-where-you-want-me-to-be kind of player throughout his career.

I'm not suggesting it either.
Just afraid that DL will pop outta nowhere and sign another vet that’s near the end instead of getting a guy who can play the spot for years to come.
On the other hand, I’d rather have Counsell on the bench than Rivas or Kata (AAA) or even CGz I think.

No! we’re not trading Jack?
or
No! Counsell full time is not worse than Bix or Rivas rotting on the bench?

Mientkiewicz.
Doesn’t follow suit.
Instead, he plays true Pirate baseball and flies out.
If he was a true Bucco though, it would’ve been on the first pitch.
The Utah Jazz

At least
we have Sheets @ 66 pitches thru 3-2/3.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. -- HST
Paulino doubles...
stranded with a CGz ground out to 3rd & a Snell K.
Doesn’t Snell realize that to get a win, he’s going to need to drive in a couple runs?
The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Well
LaRoche tried to field a routine grounder, and didn’t realize that he had dropped the ball out of his glove, and Paulino missed another stealing base-runner, though Freddy might have been a part of that, too. It looked catchable.
.500 or bust...
Maybe.
But in the end, all it is is another deficit for the Buccos.
The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Interesting thing going on with the Phillies
Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth are seemingly locked in a pretty epic battle to take over the center field position on the Phillies. No matter who wins, both guys are playing really well right now.
.500 or bust...
yup.

Snell just realized
that he’s already saddled with the loss since the offense is crap, so he doesn’t even care any more.

back up – thanks to alla you for keeping me informed, if unhappy…
Snell @ 111 pitches.

Side note:
When I went to the Bucs/Cubs game last Friday, afterward only the pitchers lagged around to sign autographs. Alla the position players either jumped on the bus, or into cabs.

Watching this game
juxtaposed with watching the Phillies game is depressing. They’ve just had a 7 run inning, and they lead the Nats 11-0 in the 6th. Howard has 2 HRs, and they’ve had 4 total in the game.
.500 or bust...
we must stop running with scissors.

the substitute one-pitch out, CGz, and a pinch-hitter. Exciting.
The Utah Jazz

You'd think our pitching staff could learn something from Sheets
Snell throws 111 pitches in 6 innings, Sheets 123 in 9 innings…and evidently less than 55 after the 4th inning. (Based on the 66 pitches after 3 2/3 innings comment)
That’s a lot of 10 pitch or less innings. Something the Pirates pitching staff should try sometime.
Or something the Pirates offense
should try to avoid.
