So far this season...
The 2008 season is a little under two months old, but the Pirates and Cubs are already meeting for the 10th time in 48 games on Friday. The Cubs are enjoying the close encounter the most, dominating the series between the two teams with an 8-1 record and a 69-38 advantage in runs scored.
From the MLB preview.

Also, for fun...
if you click on the MLB preview link above and scroll down, you see the following information in table form…
The Cubs only have 2 hitters hitting below .200 against Duke in his career, and they are Jim Edmonda (0-8) & Kosuke Fukudome (1-6 on the season/in his career). Henry Blanco is at .200 exactly (1-5). Mark DeRosa is at .267 in 15 at-bats. No one else is below .300 against Duke. Fontenot & Hoffpauir have never faced Duke.
On the other hand, against Zambrano, Chavez is 0-3 in his career. Bautista is hitting .077 in 13 ABs. one-pitch out is hitting .500, but that’s in 2 ABs. Eye Chart is 1-1 in his career. Oh, and Ronny Paulino? 16 ABs, and a .063 average. Sanchez is just above .200 (.207) in 29 at-bats. Rivas, Michaels & CGz have never faced Z.
Just FYI (and because I’m bored).

Agreed.
I’ll suffer the occasional defensive lapse if it means the .170 hitting one-pitch out sits.

Who is?
I’d say McLouth outgrew his leadoff spot. Third is where he belongs.
But he isn't hitting 3rd
and we don’t have a #2 hitter either.

If it were me I'd try Bay or move Nate back...
Freddy never walks, his OBP sucks and if he isn’t hitting over .300 it makes no sense to lead him off.

Instead Derrek Lee hits a ball that bounces off Nady’s face.

Looking ugly.
And we’re only in the top of the 1st.

It's gonna be a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong night
predicting the final to be 11-2
With Burnett and Salas
pitching 2 innings each.
We need a 3rd baseman.
Lets go sign a vet that can actually play 3rd base.
No need to put off on it… not like Eye Chart is the 3rd baseman of the future or anything.

Following up on my Paulino comment yesterday
instead of LaRoche batting, just let him select a fielder and go ahead and throw it to him. What’s the difference?
.500 or bust...
God.
11 seems like a pessimistic bet for how many runs they’ll score.

I don't understand this
they claim we “drill fundamentals” all the time in practice, but we look like my younger brother’s t-ball team sometimes. I wish they would just admit that we don’t have very much inherent talent.
.500 or bust...
I guess my question is
how can you suck so freaking hard, yet be a “professional” team?
.500 or bust...
Gameday...
Theriot reaches on a force attempt, missed catch error by Unknown (0), assist to pitcher Zach Duke.
WTF?
The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Duke threw a slider to Gomez
and Gomez pulled a Paulino…letting it go off the end of his glove.
Even Gomez
has the dreadful SS E-itis. At least he can rake off the bench.
Guess its a good thing Gorzo isn't pitching this weekend
ERA of 17 versus the Cubs and less than 3 against anyone else. Simple…isn’t it…JR…just don’t throw Gorzo against the Cubs anymore.
Well Duke pitched a scoreless inning
That’s a start :P
Imagine
If they would spend as much money on pitching as they did Bobbleheads for our pathetic franchise. We would be awesome. Ugh.
.500 or bust...
Oh, hey Cubs,
welcome to PNC Park… enjoy your 3 automatic wins!
Seriously, I’m out. I can’t take this tonight. Somehow, being drunk has made it worse.
.500 or bust...
Duke looks at 8 pitches in his at bat
Freddy and Nate 4 pitches…combined.
How could it be much worse?
Other than having Matt Morris pitch, and Rivas play SS.
Ummm
Cubs aren’t on WGN tonight. White Sox are.
the fans can't even get it right
guy is wearing a pirates jacket. He wants a $10 baseball so bad that he interferes with a ball in play. Basically, one of 2 things was going to happen…it was going out for a home run…or it hits the padding at the top of the wall…bounces back over Johnson’s head and Bay gets an inside the parker.
Maybe I am thinking too much...
but why not bring in Salas with the Cubs lineup stacked with righties?
lol
Carlos Zambrano is 3-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
Every Cub except Soto has a hit.
The only Buc with a hit is Bay.

If Russell is ever going to flip a buffet table
it needs to be tonight.
And look
how much good it’s doing. they are still doing too many stupid things. A physical error is one thing…but they are making too many mental errors on top of them. He needs to get mad once in a while.
Anyone want to buy an infield??
Ours…preferably. Bring up the Indy infield…they can’t do any worse…can they? If one or two of our outfielders gets hurt…we’re looking at the 1899 Cleveland Spiders.
To me
bringing in Burnett and letting him continue to suck is an indication that we’re waving the white flag. I hate that.
.500 or bust...
It'd seem that way
no matter who you brought in.
The Cubs are in the heads of the Pirates players. All of them.
The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Ronnie
with more warning track power. Obviously, spinach or wheaties are not in his diet.
Now
we try to get the Cubs to go 1-2-3 in an inning today.
The Utah Jazz

And Russell runs up the white flag
by PH’ing Joey Bats for the pitcher and 0 for 3vas for Freddy.
Then again…right now the only difference between Freddy and Rivas…is Freddy catches the ball once in a while.
So now our bench is Bixler and Chavez
may as well let Chavez catch the 9th.
They need to have a mercy rule
whenever the Pirates are playing

Can we even consider this rock-bottom? I have a terrible feeling it’s going to get much, much worse before the end of the season.
.500 or bust...
Worse
record-wise or performance-wise?
They’ll probably be much worse than 4-games-under-.500 soon.
As for performance-wise… can it really get much worse?
No one cares. The starter gets rocked, the infield is crap, the catcher is out.
Well, I guess if Jason-ity & X-Man (& Wilson?) are dealt, it’ll get a lot worse.
The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
I can understand that we don’t have the talent level to compete in the Majors at this point, but I mean worse in the whole “screw this, we’re cashing our paychecks” way…
.500 or bust...
After we trade away
all the players that have played a bit this season, yes, it’ll get worse.
Much worse.
The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
Also
all of the starters have regressed from last year.
And the bullpen has been alright at best.
The infield is crap, the bench is crap.
X-Man. McLouth. Jason-ity. Doumit. That’s about it.
The Utah Jazz
A disillusioned Pirates fan in Utah...
10 runs in 2 innings
that’s 5 runs an inning to tie it up.
doable, no?

Dude,
What have you been drinking? I’m proud of you ;-)

I had 6 pints of various different beers before the game (got out of work early)... 2 Rogue Pilsners, 2 Smoked Lagers, and 2 Brooklyn Dupple Boks. It was fun :D

atta boy
just got home from work myself – was listening to alla this shiite on WGN radio. I am already on my 2nd cocktail. Gah.

Yeah...
This game has sobered me up a lot, though, so I am contemplating going back out again. Luckily, my neighborhood bar is just 2 blocks away, so I can walk it.
.500 or bust...
Gamecast
is thankfully frozen, and I switched the teevee over to the Laker game a while back, so more cocktails it is for me. Unfortunately, I’ve got to work tomorrow.

Yeah, I don’t think I have the will now to head back out. I’ll probably just finish watching the Phillies game here.

I tried to drown my sorrows
...but they learned to swim.

I'd like to sit around and watch the monster comeback in the 9th inning
but I need food.
Maybe I’ll get back in time for the end of the comeback.

I tried...
optimism sucks though.
And it just makes me feel more depressed.

Ridgerunner Rum
or maybe Yuengling, if I don’t feel like getting hammered. Or maybe I’ll head to 1-2-3 …
What? The Pirates played the Cubs? How’d they do?
