Pirates Recall Bryan Bullington

...And demote Marino Salas. Bullington is terrible, but the Pirates need someone who can pitch for long stretches and give their bullpen some rest.

Technically...

...couldn’t anybody pitch 2-3 innings while giving up a bunch of runs? I mean, I think that even I could handle that.

Dave Duncan

Has anybody noticed the success Dave Duncan has had with Wainwright, Carpenter, and Wellemeyer? None of these players had any success before coming to the Cardinals and yet they are all performing very well under Duncan. While he has taken nothing and converted it into something, our man has taken guys who have all previously had success either in the minors or MLB and turned them into nothing. Snell can’t throw strikes, Duke is so bad he makes every hitter the NL’s leading hitter, and Gorzo can’t do anything right including holding men on base. Considering all the practice he’s had with the many baserunners he’s allowed you would think he could at least hold them close. There were many people who thought we had one of the best young starting staffs in baseball and now we have the worst starters in the league. What gives? I wish we could have hired Duncan in hopes that he would do for our three soon-to-be-throw-aways what he’s done for his pitchers.

Wainwright

was pretty highly rated when he was in the minors…and was rated the Braves top prospect before being traded to the Cardinals. His minor league time in the Cardinals organization was plagued by injuries. I don’t know how much credit to give to Dave Duncan for his success.

Duncan has improved Carpenter and Wellemeyer, but they knew that they had talent in Carpenter’s case, when they got him from the Blue Jays.

Frankly, I think Tracy and Colborn had these guys so screwed up that it may take quite a while to get them straightened out, if they ever do get it right.

Bullington,etc.

I tend to be one of those people who agree that a pitching coach helps some guys, hurts others, and has no effect on the rest…...However,isn’t it kind of ironic that as much as Jim Colborn was villified last year, and as much as current pitching coach Jeff Andrews was said to be liked and respected by his pitchers, many of whom he had worked with as they came up through the system, the Pirates starting pitching was much better(with the possible exception of Duke)than it was last year?

With a lot of these guys...

...I think it’s just a case of not being able to make chicken salad out of chicken shit. I mean, Bullington has zero plus pitches. What are you going to do with that? Teach him the knuckleball?

Zero plus pitches

after the injurty? I thought he was highly regarded when he was drafted.

He supposedly had a plus FB when drafted.

He didn’t show it before that year, and after that year, he never had it again.

Pitchers will occasionally have a one-year spike in velo for no reason that anybody understands (probably some very subtle mechanical thing unique to each guy). It’s just our bad luck that we bought in on him when his value was at its highest.

The thing is ...

a lot of people continue to operate under the assumption that these guys are badly underperforming. Has anyone ever actually stopped to think that they really aren’t all that good, and once the league caught up with them, they were done?

Sean Burnett

Can all the people killing the team for not taking Sean Burnett north, headed by Dejan, please raise their hand now and admit they were wrong? Burnett is terrible, bring back Meek.
