Phil Dumatrait Heads to DL
T.J. Beam replaces him, and someone will have to be removed from the roster.

From the article...
To clear space on the 40-man roster for Beam, the Pirates moved center fielder Chris Duffy, now on a rehabilitation stint with Class AA Altoona, from the 15-day to the 60-day. That will not affect when he can return, as he already has passed the 60-day mark.
I’m kinda surprised… had no idea Dumatrait was hurt. Who’s the 5th starter now?
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!

Not a good sign..
considering his prior history. My guess would be Barthmaier. JVB bombed once already this year and JR clearly wants no part of Bullington. Who else would be a candidate?

Could be just about anyone
easiest thing to do will be watch Indy’s starters over the next few days. Whoever gets skipped midweek will probably start against TB on Saturday and Morgan will get sent back to Indy.

bringing up
barthmaier seems a little hasty. his AAA numbers last year were terrible, and his AA numbers up through the beginning of this month didn’t look like somebody ready to come up just yet.
maybe gulp they would move osoria or burnett from the bullpen?
wouldn’t put it past ‘em

I hate doing this!
But I spent about an hour writing it, so I’m gonna dump a link here to hopefully ensure it gets read! The general gist is that by looking at Freddy Sanchez’s K%, pitches per plate appearance and batted ball types, one can deduce that he’s largely been the victim of some awful, awful luck this season.

Hmmm
Just watching him, it looks to me like he’s the victim of consistently swinging at pitches that aren’t in the same zip code as the strike zone.

Well, let's look at the numbers, then
Freddy’s plate discipline stata are here.
Freddy’s O-Swing% is the # of pitches outside the zone he’s swinging at. And he is swinging at a few more this year compared to last, and even more compared to ‘06. But he’s making contact with a lot more of those this year than last year, which is what his O-Contact% tells us. They may be foul balls, they may be squibs to second base, they may be pitches a half inch off the outside black that he’s driving the other way.
His Swing% tells us that he is just plain swinging at fewer pitches this year than last. This is probably because he’s seeing fewer pitches in the zone, period, which is what Zone% tells us.
Looking at those numbers, Freddy may be getting fewer good pitches to hit. However, his batted ball types are not significantly worse than in years past.

PROPS agrees that he's underperforming.
It thinks that with his component ratios, he should be hitting .295/.322/.408. Which still isn’t great, but would be better.

Freddy's O-Swing?
Is that anything like his “O-Face”?
I refuse to believe that his low average is a result of bad luck. Bad luck doesn’t run consecutively for 3 1/2 months. The man is in a slump and all we can hope is that it is related to his shoulder injury and that he will pull out of it. The best way for him to pull out of it is to watch film of his last 2 years to find out what is different in his swing and work with the hitting instructor. No amount of regression analysis or Euclidian geometry is going to make his season look palatable.

Yes it does.

I think it's both.
If I had to guess, I’d say that the loss of power comes from the shoulder, and the loss of BA comes from hitting into some bad luck.

Hopefully
the bad luck disappears soon.
It’d be nice to have a middle infielder that doesn’t totally suck. Especially when the middle infielders are constantly batting in the top 2 spots.
