Ian Snell to Have Elbow Examined
Well, I can't say I'm shocked. Ian Snell left the game after four innings today and will have his pitching elbow examined.
"I felt it with every pitch," he said. "To tell you the truth, I thought it was dead arm. But I was wrong. I tried to fight through it, just keep on going. But the velocity wasn't there. Nothing's there. Something's got to be wrong. I've never been hurt in my entire life."
Great. Even if this isn't serious, the short-term prospects of the rotation are pretty awful--anyone care to guess who will be in the rotation in two weeks?

I was thinking...
In a way, I hope there is a physical reason for his issues, not because I have anything personal against Snell, but because it would be a real, tangible problem that might be able to be corrected. If it’s mental, who knows if or when he’d ever be able to snap out of it.
.500 or bust...
this could
give a chance for Jimmy Barthamier to join the rotaition. He has been doing good in the minors this season.
Snell had elbow tenderness last September
This recent bout is not too surprising.
Steve Z
well
the argument over whether or not Coonington should push for .500, at possible risk to the future, is looking more and more like a moot point every day.
One thing for sure...
we’re blowing up Indy’s rotation for this week. JVB, Bullington and Barthmaier are scheduled to pitch the middle of the week. Gotta figure two of those three will be in Pittsburgh Friday and Saturday. And considering we aren’t comfortable with Gorzo’s health status…we might have Brad Lincoln in the rotation in the next few weeks.
Maybe
we should just shut down Snell and Gorzo the rest of the year and use their slots (and Dumatrait’s) for an open call. Punt the season and take the opportunity to audition anybody and everybody who thinks he can get hitters out. Wonder what would crawl off the slag heap for a chance to take 2-3 rotation turns?
Isn't
David Wells available?
I kid, I kid…

Isn't that what Neil has been doing, anyway?
I thought Neil had already “punted” the season by waiting for his players to return to ‘normal’ so he could elevate his trade requests. I dunno. Maybe it’s just me but I keep hearing reports of people seeing Neil at Heinz Field practicing his coffin-corner kicks.

Wild-ass guess:
The Rangers just DFA’ed Rob Tejeda a few days ago. He’d probably come pretty cheap, and he’s a 26-year-old with 46 career starts and a 4.80 career ERA as a starter.
Among internal candidates, JVB is probably still first in line.
Why not give him a shot?
You’d have to boot someone from the 40-man roster (I think), but you… it can’t be much worse. I mean, we’ve been through Matt Morris & Gorzo’s 2/3-inning disaster & Snell’s off-season & the pen (Salas, Osoria especially as of late, Burnett), etc…
Who knows… maybe you find a steal.
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!
Playing For Pride. Pirates, Utes, Panthers, and more...
Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".
40 man roster not a problem
Dejan’s Monday morning story talking about Kevin Thompson possibly needing season ending wrist surgery. If that is the case…put him on the 60 day DL, and there’s your opening. But…we have to find someone worthwhile to add before that happens.
Chalk another one up
To the stupid macho “tough your way through it” mentality.
How does
This prospect scare anyone? Snell has been downright awful pretty much all season. Does it matter if one of our young (old) guys in AAA comes up and gives up 7 runs per start? What will change? They seriously couldn’t be much worse than Snell and Gorzo.
there’s always the possibility a good deal of his problems this year is because there was something wrong with him the whole time. That would explain a lot actually

Good news...
Snell, who had elbow pain during his four-inning start yesterday, has what is called medial epicondylitis, commonly referred to as golfer’s elbow. It is the simple over-use of an elbow muscle. The arthrogram revealed no damage to the ulnar collateral ligament, which is far more important to a pitcher. He might miss one start. He had been scheduled to pitch Friday.
Dumatrait has bursitis in his rotator cuff, which means inflammation rather than structural damage. The plan is to have him return July 5, the first day he is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list.
Now if they could just fix Snell’s brain…
.500 or bust...
Why don't they just DL Snell and be done with it?
He’d miss 2 starts…and could pitch on the day he is eligible to come back.
Because
there’s no one worth calling up to replace him, even for 1 start?

Catchers aren't safe either
Of course, the Pirates have been running around with 1 healthy catcher for the past week. Indy is in the same boat. Carlos Maldonado is the only healthy catcher at Indy now. Paulino is on the 7 day DL with a bad ankle…and Michel Hernandez was removed from tonight’s game with a head injury.
