Day 2 starts at 11:30am
OF Isaac Galloway (36), RHP Daniel Webb (48), RHP Sonny Gray (52), 3b Zach Cox (72), OF Jordan Danks (86), RHP Cecil Tanner (144), RHP Luke Burnett (166), OF Brian Humpries (180), RHP Aaron Barnett (188) are still on the board.
Expect more high-risk steals early.
Another day Another Shortshop
Benji Gonzalez 5’11 160 from Puerto Rico
Pick #204
Benjamin Gomez
SS Puerto Rico BB Academy HS
Another SS?
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!
Playing For Pride. Pirates, Utes, Panthers, and more...
Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".
Gonzalez
not Gomez.

That ...
... looks like a Creechling to me. Ugh.
I've seen the MLB scouting video
Switch-hitter decent range nice motor
I guess depth in the middle-INF was a huge concern
Just how bad
is the SS depth in the minors?

Well, before today, we had two.
One of whom was a Dominican teenager in rookie ball.
So, yeah, it’s an area of need. Plus, some of these guys might turn out to be 2B/3B, even if they’re playing SS now.
MEMO to those who keep belaboring the point about the team taking shortstops:
Please remember, as Vlad points out above, that “some of these guys turn out to be 2B/3B,” or even other positions, especially with HS players. Think about what player development is supposed to mean. If the person is the best they like on the board at the time, I don`t care if they take 10 or more guys who are listed as SSs. Some of the draftees will not be signed, of course. And how many guys who do sign never see competition above A-ball anyway?
Must be pretty bad ....
... though the Bucs fourth-round pick from Pepperdine looks like more of a 2B.
BTW, these picks are flying.
Yeah...
I like how quick this is moving.
2 picks in 12 minutes for the Buccos.
And now I’m off to work.
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.

I know
But they got 43 rounds and thousands of picks to go so 15 seconds per pick is the norm
Makes sense
I was wondering how they were going to get so many picks in one day.

Pick #234
3 Jeremy Farrell
Virginia
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.

Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".
In the MLB Scouting Video
They’re showing Farrell play some 1st base
For what it's worth
PG Crosschecker, in mid-April, had Farrell as the fifth-best junior 3B, ahead of people like Allan Dykstra. Not bad.
http://pgcrosschecker.com/2008/toptenlists/april/week15_supplement.aspx
Farrell in 2008
Played all 61 games .316 11HR 54 RBI .579 SLG (led team in all those)
He could improve on his front leg kick (stiff from what I saw).
Nice pick
Son of Jon Farrell
Whom we tried to get for our manager’s job before we hired Russell.
BA: #7 in Virginia – Has power, lacks some bat speed, reasonably athletic for a 1B, but not much physical projection left.
I guess they've decided
that the left side of the infield is utter crap.
Which it probably is… so that might be a good thing.
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.

Farrell is ...
... the son of Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell, an early front runner for the Bucs’ manager post.
9th pick goes to
3b Matt Hague OK State teammate of Jordy Mercer
Okay ...
... unhappy is a bad word. The Pirates HATE their depth on the left side of the infield.
That said, would it hurt so much to take a f#$% pitcher?
Does it have much of anything to do with
the Pirates and “depth on the left side of the infield,” or is it about drafting guys that you think are best on the board at the time? Why do they HAVE to take a pitcher?
6'2 215 R/R 3b
hit .299 with two homers, eight doubles, three triples and 19 RBIs for Falmouth in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2007
BA #5 in Oklahoma
They say he’s a good senior sign, think he projects best as a RF. Good arm, quick hands on the swing, but kind of an unconventional load on his stance.
Cape Cod?
That’s where most of the college prospects go in the summer. For the most part it greatly improves their draft stock
The 10th round pick goes to
A PITCHER
Andrew Gagnon 6’3 RHP from Cali
Another Cali pick
Good to see the Pirates actually flipped the bill to send someone out there this year.
Yep
4 picks from Cail
Can’t found anything on Gagnon
D'oh!
As of Feb., he said he wouldn’t sign unless he went first five rounds. Hopefully, he changed his mind.
Or they pay him 5th round money
which is still possible
11th pick - David Rubenstein
CF 6’2 190 Appy State
interesting..
Outfielder David Rubinstein was voted onto the first-team while shortstop Jason Altenhof garnered second-team accolades.Rubinstein picked up first-team honors after leading the Mountaineers with a .374 batting average and a school-record 29 doubles. The sophomore also has a team-best 63 runs, four triples, three home runs and is third on the team with 41 RBI.
The draft video is pretty funny
The guy flubs the first two balls hit to CF. Pretty nice swing, though.
I like this pick
2008 season … .332/.429/.544, 19 2B, 8 HR, 12 SB, 33B, 39K
On the draft (from AS website):
"I’ve gotten some calls about signability and things," Rubinstein said. "Basically, if an offer is right, and if I get drafted in a good round, I’ll consider it."
12th pick - Calvin Anderson
1b 6’7 240 from Southern A&M
6-7?
I’d like to think the dude has some pop. Then again, he probably slow as Grandpa Simpson.
13th pick - Robert Gardner
OF 6’3 185 from a Texas HS
Some more info...
...here. Fast guy, line drive bat, committed to Arkansas. Also pretty good at football, plays WR.
14th pick - Michael Colla
U of Arizona RHP 6’2 220
BA: #22 in Arizona
Low-90s FB, but not much secondary stuff, and more of a thrower than a pitcher right now.
Vlad ...
... since WTM is missing in action, you seem like the resident draft expert. That said, do you like what the Pirates have done so far?
For the most part, yeah.
All the guys they’ve taken so far seem at least plausible as potential ML players, which is a nice change from the Creech era.
Just a thought.....
As we go through these later rounds, we may be looking for organizational depth and signability, but I don’t think the fact that they took a bunch of shortstops necessarily reflects on the organization. Although clearly it is TRUE that we have virtually no middle infield prospects, I’m with Vlad that SSs are usually the best athletes at these levels and there is a good chance that many of them will eventually move. Hopefully they were fulfilling their objective of taking the best guys on their board. If they all prove to be good they will be great trade pieces. It’s not like they are putting together a team to put on the field tomorrow. The Reds took Smoak and they have Joey Votto. Take the best guy on the board.
Also, obviously we aren’t going to have any sense of how this draft turns out for 3-5 years. But, I have been giving Huntington the benefit of the doubt since the day he took the job. I think he and Coonolly have taken a lot of unfair criticism-like IPF calling Huntington a fool- on this site. I didn’t think there was much to do over the winter with so few trading chips and having players coming off poor seasons. The free agent signings are turning out to be fair to good, and more importantly there were no big onerous contracts handed out that will hamper the club going forward. The signing of Dumatrait appears, for the moment, to be brilliant and I’m sure fairly lucky. The pickups of Yates and Michaels, while not significant in the long run, have improved the club.
And, I have to like the draft with the caveat that we get guys signed. I don’t know how you can not give these guys kudos for the job done thus far.
I am not 100% sure Yates has improved the club,
but your point still stands. Yates was certainly a very worth-while and cheap addition to a pen that severely needed depth and a power arm.
15th pick - Chris Aure
6 foot 180 lefty from of all place North Pole, Alaska
BA: Pacific Rim #6
They call him the best Alaskan prospect in ten years. FB is high 80s with some projection, change and curve have potential.
Looks like we'll be able to sign
he’s set to go to some JC in Upstate NY
Junior College
means he probably thinks he can greatly improve his position next year as he can be drafted again next year with more exposure here in the lower 48.
16th pick - OF Wes Freeman
6’4 215 from All Saints Academy
BA: #13 in Florida, #138 overall
Tools guy, strong and fast, committed to Central Florida. Good raw power, some mechanical issues with his swing (which y’all seem to have noticed already).
BA digs him
Very toolsy high school outfielder, Wesley Freeman, goes to the Pirates. Freeman is a high upside center fielder with five-tool potential. Some scouts worry about his bat, but Freeman has huge power potential and is a great pick for the Pirates here.
Ach, there went Saito.
I’d hoped we’d grab him late. He’s a lot of fun: a tiny lefty who throws really hard.
Yeah
But really, it’s looks strange. There’s a hitch that shouldn’t be there.
One minor disappointment: For whatever reason, the Bucs are going heavy on the RH hitters … 10 of 12 position players so far.
17th round
Jaron Shepard LH CF
Navarro College (TX)
19th pick - Jason Haniger
C – 6-2 215 from Georgia Tech
Pretty nice junior year at the plate
.329/.415/.638
10 HR, 13 2B in only 152 at-bats.
One year too late
A catcher, from Georgia Tech.
Back to Chris Aure
BA did a report on him
20th pick
Robert Miller
6-1 185 RHP Shawnee HS (NJ)
From the video, he looks pretty decent. Tops out at 92 or so.
20th pick - Robert Miller
6’1 185 RHP from Jersey
I guess he goes by Quinton
Weird.
Anyways, here’s a story from March.
The hard-throwing, 6-foot-2, 180-pound righthander, rated as one of the nation’s top prospects, has committed to North Carolina and appears to have recovered from shoulder tendinitis that limited him to two games as a pitcher last year. He went 7-2 as a sophomore.
Good gamble, though.
21st pick - Brent Klinger
6’4 185 RHP from Glendale CC in AZ
Found some info about him here
Chance to have a power arm, a lot of upside. Good athletic body with good size. He has a good release and the ball jumps out of his hand very well. We expect big things out of Brett and his best baseball is in front of him. Although he throws 90 plus, his pitches are sneaky quick
Nice
Where’d you find that? My google search was fruitless … lol.
22nd pick - Pat Palmeiro
6’3 210 3B from Heritage, TX
Here's a complete profile
http://www.perfectgame.org/players/playerprofile.aspx?ID=151411
Surprised he didn’t get drafted higher.
If they can fork the dough though.
Just saw that too ...
Strong build, good hitting approach, very good bat speed, big raw power, solid actions, good arm strength, solid actions, carry on throws, great bloodlines, high level prospect with good draft potential.
But is he drug free?
I like this pick
Judging from the video, he looks like an excellent athlete. Nice swing, too.
HA!
He’s the son of Steriod King Rafeal Palmeiro
23rd pick - Austin Wright
6’3 220 lefty from an Illinois HS
Neal and company continue to impress
From the Arkansas website, where he’s a recruit.
Wright is ranked as the No. 57 prospect on Baseball America’s 2008 Top 100 College Prospects … he is also ranked as the 37th-best prospect in the nation by Perfect Game … he is No. 72 on the Perfect Game Crosschecker 2008 Top 300 MLB Draft Prospects, which includes all draft eligible players (high school and college) ... selected to participate in the Area Code games in 2006 and 2007 … was chosen for the Aflac All-American Classic and pitching one inning in that game … posted a 3-4 mark as a junior at Conant High School with a 3.15 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 40 innings … went 6-2 with a 2.48 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 48 innings as a sophomore in 2006, earning all-conference and Daily Herald all-area honors.
But ...
... like some of the others, he’ll probably be a tough sign.
Looks like Palmeiro, Miller, and Wright
Are fallbacks if the Bucs aren’t able to sign Alvarez and Scheppers.
It’s like the ghost of Mickey White is somewhere in that draft room today
Come on ...
... I really doubt they’ll let Alvarez go. Why can’t they sign all five?
hard to say
maybe nutting opened up his wallet this year or maybe they’re just trying to throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and see what sticks
Sure I'd like for them to sign all of them
It just depends on the draft budget and how much they’re willing to spend
24th pick - Brett Litwin
3b from St. Stephens, NC
He's a Dookie in waiting
From Blue Devils website:
Litwin is an All-Conference player at St. Stephens High School in Hickory, N.C. He was named All-Piedmont by the Charlotte Observer after hitting .427 with 14 doubles, six home runs and 33 RBI last season. Litwin is ranked as one of the top 100 players in the country by both Perfect Game USA and Baseball America, and he is rated as the No. 2 player in North Carolina by Perfect Game.
25th pick - Brian Leach
6’3 195 RHP from Southern Mississippi
Hmmm ...
7.42 ERA in 11 appearances, nine starts, this year.
Yeah AWFUL numbers
they must like his stuff. Whatever that is.
I guess ...
... then again, it’s a 20th-some round pick. They must have seen something there … maybe he’s getting over an injury.
looks like he's a power pitcher, perhaps bullpen material
Brian Leach is another junior college transfer that will contribute to the Golden Eagles starting pitching staff this season. Leach is the hardest thrower on the team and, like Billeaud, he could earn a mid-week starting spot or even earn a weekend starter spot.
link
Looks like like another smoke break
I’ll be back later
Woobie hold it down if you can.
26th pick
Zach Wilson
6-1 190 RH 3B Woodrow Wilson (CA)
He was a teammate of Twins’ first rounder Aaron Hicks (per MIB.com):
This year, 3B Zach Wilson may not be the top-rounder Moustakas or Cardenas ultimately became, but he’s definitely caught the eyes of scouts visiting Woodrow Wilson High School in Southern California to see Aaron Hicks play.
I don't know his power numbers
But Wilson apparently played in one of the toughest hitting parks in the US—Blair Field in Long Beach.
27th pick
Edwin Roman
5-10 160 R/R CF from Puerto Rico Baseball Academy.
28th pick
Kyle Saukko
5-11 175 RHP Sierra JC (CA)
I'm back here's a brief rundown

30th – Dan Martin 6’9 RHP from TX JC
31st – Ryan Hinson 6’3 LHP from Clemson
32nd – Anthony Forrest 6’5 RHP from Louisana JC
