Sanchez hitting 2nd again...

His auto out in that spot renders the rest of the lineup almost meaningless…unless Maholm holds the Yankees to 2 or less or the Bucs hit lots of solo homers.

The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.

It took Mussina

5 pitches to get out of the 1st inning.
Nice job guys.

Of course

DeadFred hit the first pitch.

Why WOULDN'T you

throw Freddy BP speed down the middle? I’d put it on a tee for him and still get him out 80% of the time.

How many of them would be K's?

50% of the outs?

Jack to lead off next inning

Lineup works for that inning you say? Sanchez hits third.

Deah horse and all I know, but I just don’t understand Russell’s logic with Sanchez.

I heard Madonna was seen today . . .

. . . checking in at Oakland’s own Webster Hall Hotel. The ballplayers’ girls love that place.

Three solid innings for Maholm so far. It’d be nice if he could go seven or more.

It

could take more than that.

Maholm cruising

Just hope he avoids that implosion inning where he walks 3 or gives up multiple solo shots.

Baiting you???

How do you think I feel with all the Freddy hate???

by matskralc on Jul 10, 2008 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't hate Freddy...

I hate JR’s decision to bat him at the top of the order. Make your case for keeping him up there.

by Hitman Easler on Jul 10, 2008 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've linked to it twice on here

and won’t degrade Charlie’s fine website by linking to my drivel again, but essentially, based on his batted ball types, Freddy has been one of the unluckiest batters I’ve ever seen.

A high school chemistry teacher of mine had a favorite saying: “The answer isn’t the answer, the process is the answer.” The results of Freddy’s plate appearances cannot be where the analysis ends. How is he getting to those results? When you look at it, Freddy isn’t really doing anything different than he’s always done: his strikeout rate has barely increased, he’s hitting just as many line drives as he used to (those turn into hits, on average, about 75% of the time), he’s hitting slightly more groundballs (which are hits at a much lower rate than line drives, but higher, of course, than the flyballs he’s hitting fewer of).

What’s happening is that his liners are being hit right at outfielders and his groundballs are being hit right at infielders. There isn’t much he can do about that than wait for his luck to even out.

A much simpler argument, though: who else do you put there? We’ve got four good hitters in our OF+Doumit. The other four are interchangeably ineffective.

Also, batting order doesn’t matter that much in terms of scoring runs. The most efficient lineups will score a handful of runs over the course of an entire season more than a standard cliche type of lineup. Usually not even enough to amount to an extra win.

by matskralc on Jul 10, 2008 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Follow up

Pitch F/X data also shows that Freddy is getting fewer good pitches to hit this year, and is therefore swinging at more pitches out of the zone. This difference wasn’t incredibly significant, though, but enough to be noticeable in the data.

by matskralc on Jul 10, 2008 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You and JR must have had the same chemistry teacher

I don’t want to argue about it too much, because shocking as it may seem, I actually like Freddy. He is a great dude and he and his wife are assets to the community.

That said, regardless of how it is happening , he is getting on base at a .260 ish clip. That is atrocious. He has never been inclined to walk a lot and you would like to see runners on for your better hitters. This is where you and I will disagree about lineups not meaning much.

As for who else? Pick someone that gets on base more for Bay , Doumit, Nady, and company to knock in.

by Hitman Easler on Jul 10, 2008 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He might be having the worst luck ever...

but you can’t use that to justify him being in the #2 batter.
Can you?

by UtesFan89 on Jul 10, 2008 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not quite, no

First, as I already remarked, lineups aren’t that important. Managers act like they are because it’s one of the single biggest things they can influence. Study after study after study have shown the best possible lineups and worst possible lineups are maybe a few tens in runs apart over the course of the season. The difference between best and worst (and major league managers are actually pretty efficient at creating lineups: the “worst” possible lineups are never seen) lineups are 1, 2, maybe 3 wins in an entire season. So, lineup just isn’t that important.

Secondly, part of the point of my comment is that Freddy’s results, because of his process, are likely to even out over the long run.

by matskralc on Jul 10, 2008 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well yeah

The fact that Freddy can’t draw a walk to save his life is why he’s never been as valuable as he initially appeared. For exactly the reason we’re seeing this year: when the hits ain’t dropping where they ain’t, he brings nothing else to the table. This is the danger of relying on batting average as both a measure of skill and value: it’s too fickle.

by matskralc on Jul 10, 2008 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe

this IS his luck evening out for the batting championship season when EVERYTHING fell in.

by bucdaddy on Jul 10, 2008 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely

But his batting components are exactly the same. Freddy’s “true” results are probably in between this year and 2006. Also known as 2007!

by matskralc on Jul 10, 2008 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

2007 OPS+

= 103. He’s a thoroughly average player.

by bucdaddy on Jul 10, 2008 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

103 OPS+...

...is actually a little above average for a middle infielder. If he were still at 3B, it’d be just about average, but the offensive baseline is lower for a 2B.

Pretty minor quibbble, though.

Does anyone know

Exactly what was our record going into the All -Star break last year? Even though I believe we are a better team this year than last, I remember we went on a bit of a tear right before the break (followed by losing what? 15 of 16 after it?).

by PureTekulve on Jul 10, 2008 8:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

40-48

and came out of the break losing 14 of 16.

Anyone noticing Mussina's Pitch Count?

Just 5 pitches in the first inning.
But 81 more pitches over the next 4 innings.

Still no BB, though.

by WstCstBucco on Jul 10, 2008 8:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That sucked

Still 7 solid innings from Maholm. Maybe Freddy will knock in another run this inning and give him a chance to win it. :)

Wow,

I’ve noticed that since I’ve quit watching games, we seem to be battling back a lot better. A 2 run lead on the Yanks was NOT what I was expecting.

I’m still too shell-shocked to watch, but rock on!

.500 or bust...

I don’t think that Freddy forgot how to hit. That situation with his shoulder has to be affecting his swing in some way….
