Yoslan Herrera to Start Saturday

Phil Dumatrait back to the DL. Yikes, this is getting ugly. Herrera is 27 and can't even put up a good strikeout rate in Class AA.

Thanks to Matskralc.

I’m, quite frankly, frightened. I mean, you people think JVB is bad? I’m setting the over/under on Cardinals runs tomorrow at 9.5, and it’s only so low because the bullpen is pretty rested and Herrera won’t have to pitch long.

Also, Herrera is “27”, not 27.

And

Franky is coming back…so it could be real ugly.

What?

Moe, Larry and Curley weren’t available? Oh, wait …

Moe, Larry and Curly

have already started for the Pirates this year.

With Todd Wellemeyer pitching tonight

Even if Herrera somehow someway puts up a quality start it won’t be enough.

The scary part...

is that you’re actually serious about Wellemeyer, and with good reason.

Todd Freakin’ Wellemeyer would be our ace by a wide margin

I'm going...

to tonight’s game. Hopefuly Herrera will have a decent showing. I just moved back to the east and it’s my first game at PNC Park since the 2004 season.

Herrera

I would think that Pirate fans that care enough to blog would welcome an opportunity to see what Herrera can do. Maybe he’ll fall on his face, but could that be any worse than what JVB, Bullington, Barthmaier or several other of our starting pitching options have done recently?

Look - the guy is on the 40 man roster. While I realize that he is Littlefield’s man, we might as well see if he has anything.

I’ll be rooting for him.

the gunner

I think you have a good point. We might as well see if he can do anything for us, especially considering the fact that he is going to get major-league pay through next season and occupy a 40-man roster spot. Hopefully he`ll give us at least 5 decent innings.

We are rooting for him...

just not expecting very much.

Or at least I am…

The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.

Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".

herrera

either way, whatever he does tonight can’t be much worse than any other pitcher we throw out there

Just wondering ...

where all the descent about Herrera is coming from. Is it frustration? Or is there a legitimate doubt about a his ability? While I believe he is not the second coming of Jose Contreras, Herrera is red hot right now. He posted a 1.03 ERA over four starts in June. He was lights out in his lone AAA call up. He’s got a great amateur track record, and was BA’s No. 4 prospect in the Pirates organization two years ago. So far he has been precisely what scouts predicted he would be … a solid starter with big-league upside once he got back into shape and got his feet on the ground. I think he is going to surprise a lot of Pirates fans this season.

Probably

frustration with the way the season has ended up.
Especially the pitching… which seemed so strong last season.
