Romak and Negrych likely to stay at Lynchburg all year
http://www.altoonamirror.com/page/content.detail/id/509049.html?nav=727
I strongly disagree with the Pirates on this and feel like both guys should have moved up 2 weeks ago. I understand that both guys may need to improve their D (especially Negrych, 19 errors). IMO, defense is defense and they could improve it just as well in AA as in A+. Because of this I think it makes no sense at all to not move Negrcyh. Negrych's hitting isn't going to get any better at A+, so he needs the promotion to continue his development as a hitter. Romak strikes out a lot, which is troubling, but overall he's hitting 300 and leading the league in homers. I can see *maybe* keeping Romak to try to reduce the Ks. At the same time, a promotion could help Romak reduce the Ks because it might cause him to struggle and thus force him to make adjustments.

Negrych:
No speed, lack of range in the field, a smallish player already limited to a corner position and has no power…why are you so interested in him? I hope he becomes something-he has shown the ability to stroke the ball-but otherwise he doesn`t seem to have much of a future.

Because he's hitting 365 this year. He also has a bunch of doubles.
And also because . . . WE HARDLY HAVE ANYONE ELSE! Seriously we have so very few prospects that I view him as one of our top 10 or so prospects.

Bacon on Romak
“Bacon said that the Pirates are likely to keep him in Single-A because Romak can rotate between the designated hitter spot and the outfield.”
Yeah. What? What the hell reason is that? I’d be interested to know if that was Bacon’s thought or if he also heard that from Kyle Stark.
But I’m pretty sure I’ll get a better answer in Sundays PG, which should be up in about a half an hour.

I certainly hope you are right, but I just don`t see it.

maybe?
they mean than romak can rotate between 1B and DH to get as many at bats as possible. though he can do that at altoona, as well.
i understand negrych. he hits like a middle infielder (moderate gap power) but plays defense like a first baseman (no speed, minimal range). which makes him, i dunno, maybe the new freddy sanchez?
even so, i’m not sure how much better his defense is going to get. if they view him as a utility player, then they must be aware that he’s probably reaching his cieling as far as defensive ability. if thats the case, then you might as well promote him and see if he can keep hitting in altoona. besides, it isnt like there’s anyone at altoona who would definitely deserve more playing time than him.

Dejan gets an answer for you about Romak...
The article is listed here
The part about Romak is closer to the bottom of the page. Curious to hear what Negrych’s ‘book’ has to say he needs to work on to get bumped up a level.
Hague is kicking some serious butt in Hickory, looking damn good!

Their reason is bullshit
What if Romak doesn’t finish the “book” this year, are they going to send Romak back to Lynchburg next year?

Social promotion
They’ll need outfielders at Altoona next year. This year they’re stocked up with future stars like Jonel Pacheco, Brad Corley and Chris Duffy.

Big spike in Corley's walk rate!
He’s already got 13 this year. That’s only one below his figure for all of last season!
All kidding aside, he’s Kevin Haverbusch without the anger problems. (And some of the power.)

Social Promotion
Although you never know what might happen. Duffy has missed the last few games with an ear infection, Pacheco was held out the last couple nights with injury and Shelby Ford who, although not an outfielder, is hurt as well. I wouldn’t be shocked if there was a little movement just to help Altoona in the meantime. They activated Reyes as a 3rd catcher behind Lerud and Perez the other night. Both of those guys have seen time at the DH over the last week.

Romak has issues with contact...
...but I still think this is misguided. Most guys in A+ can’t even throw a decent breaking ball. How’s he going to learn pitch selection if all he sees is slop?

Article from Lynchburg News Advance
Article with an interview from Kyle Stark in the Lynchburg paper. Gives a little more insight to promotions and what upper management is looking for.

what
INSANITY!!! from that article, talking about promoting Romak – mostly paraphrasing Stark….
“The problem is where to put him. The outfield at Double-A Altoona is crowded as it is, with James Boone (.240, 7 HR, 22 RBIs), Brad Corley (.283, 8 HR, 34 RBI), Jonel Pacheco (.280, 10 HR, 42 RBI) and former big leaguer Chris Duffy all sharing time.”
You have got to be kidding me.

Good grief
Sounds like Lerud got promoted for being on time. From the PG article on Sunday, it’s about “the process.”

Stark isn't quoted as saying that exact line.
The line you quote there is the author, although it was probably inspired by what Stark said. Needless to say, I was not impressed with Stark from this article.
Another great one from Stark:
"We’re not going to make the decisions based on performance," he (Stark) said in a phone interview this week.
OK, so what was all that accountability stuff about then. If you aren’t going to reward guys for hitting 360 or leading their league in home runs, then what the hell are you going to reward them for? Being well dressed?

I am a little late here
but to answer the question of why we might like Negrych….
look who is starting at 3B. Doesn’t hit for average. Doesn’t get on base. No speed. Little range, fields like a first baseman (and not one of those good first basemen like Pujols). Hit’s a few home runs every couple weeks. It’s Jose Bautista. That is why I’m interested in what Negrych can do. Hell if he hits for .275 I’d take him.

i'm also late...
but there is no reason whatsoever Jim Negrych should still be at Lynchburg. He is now batting .368 and has 61 RBI. He also has 36 doubles. It’s like he just has extended batting practice every day during games. He’s now batting .397 in July and his worst month was May when he batted .330. He’s been consistently hitting the ball all season. He can’t get any better in high-a ball.

His D still sucks.
He can hit all he wants, and it won’t do a damn thing for his glove, which is the team’s stated reason for leaving him at that level.
Personally, I don’t think he’s ever going to field enough to do more than fake it at 2B in the majors (a-la Wiggy), but it’s not my call.

if that's the case
why not let him work on his fielding in AA. It’s not like, once you go to AA, you can’t still work on fielding. And fielding in AA is the same as fielding in high-A. Fielding is fielding. If the guy can hit, move him up.

Two reasons:
1) Promoting him when he isn’t improving on the area where the team wants him to focus sends the message that he doesn’t need to listen to his coaches, which in turn will get him in trouble at higher levels.
2) There’s already a 2B prospect at Altoona: Shelby Ford, who was on most people’s preseason lists of our top 10 prospects. I don’t think all that much of him, but he’s not ready for AAA, and given the generally poor talent throughout our system, I don’t think we can afford to just toss him to the side. If we promoted Negrych now, we’d need to move him to either 1B or 3B.
Also, it’s possible that the Pirates specifically want Negrych to work with the infield instructor at Lynchburg, for some reason. That’s sometimes a consideration in level assignments.

ok,
i like reason #1.
I also see that as soon as Ford gets off the DL, he needs to be playing every day, even with the sub-.100 avg. in July.
I guess my problem is that there shouldn’t be as huge an emphasis on his fielding. I don’t know, it’s just been an opinion of mine for awhile that defense is one of the least important aspects of the game of baseball. Not that it’s not important, just one of the least important. I also can’t make a judgement on his defense because I think defensive statistics are the most skewed things in baseball. I need to actually see him to come up with what I think.

Reason #2
My random thoughts—
Altoona just moved up Angel Gonzalez from Lyunchburg and he has hit .400 during his first crack at AA ball. Why move him and not Negrych to take those starts even if it is just a band aid till Ford returns? Certainly says something.
Also – Moving Negrych to 1st or 3rd may not be the answer. At 1B Jason Delany has played well this year. He is hitting close to .300 and from my understanding he hasn’t missed a game (like 101 straight) so I doubt Negrych moves him.
Negrych was playing 3B at Lynchburg for the first part of the season, but was moved back to 2B. Perhaps he just doesn’t project long term to playing there. If thats the case, keeping him in Lynchburg doesn’t hurt him. He can tee off on some people and learn the defense. As Vlad says, if he works on his defense, he will find a place higher up.

Not listening to coaches
Have you seen Negrych play? The problem has nothing to do with coachability. The physical tools aren’t there. If the idea is to leave him at Lynchburg until he becomes a decent defensive player, he should definitely jump into the housing market now. Buy low and sell in a decade or so when the value has rebounded.
There’s a reason Kyle Stark was talking about Negrych as a utility player. He profiles as a bat off the bench. There’s no point grooming him for a role he can’t fill.

Charlie?
I don’t know if he reads all the threads, but he used to criticize DL (rightfully, of course) for focusing on what players can’t do instead of what they can. The extremely conservative way they’ve handled several players seems like more of the same to me.
