Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

Brad Lincoln Heads to Lynchburg

Brad Lincoln has moved up to Lynchburg. It'll be interesting to see how this goes. He showed great control at Hickory, with only six walks in 62 innings, but little else--his 46 strikeouts are a bit less than you'd hope for, and his eight homers a bit more. He also got hit hard in three of his last four starts. I'm glad the Pirates moved him up, but the timing is odd, and it may take a while to master the level.

In other minor league news, Andrew McCutchen went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs in the AAA All-Star Game today.

I liked his presence at the plate. Looked comfortable the two at-bats I saw. The announcers raved about him but said he was 23 years old.

I remember a funny account of - maybe it was the Futures Game? - a couple years ago in which the announcers raved over and over again about what spectacular poise Jeff Francis had for a 19-year-old. They then interviewed Francis and told him that, and he informed them he was 23.

I'm no Dr. Will Carroll

But I’m guessing The Process™ had him limited in some way, or, he needed to demonstrate command of all his pitches, and some of his starts probably focused less, or not at all on Performance. The Pirates are “not going to make the decisions based on performance.” (K. Stark). Perhaps his last start, which was stellar, satisfied something in The Process, or all the wraps were off and demonstrated command of everything such that it’s obvious to a scout that he would be doing that consistenly from here on out at low-A.

My first thought above stems from knowing that in initial rehab, they don’t throw breaking balls at all, then throw them will little torque, and build up slowly to throwing full tilt breaking balls. I’m just connecting the dots that even further along in rehab command or sheer volume of breaking stuff is limited.
