Around SBN: The Worst Season of Francisco Rodriguez's Career Bar-right-arrows

Tom Boleska

First off I want to say hey to everyone over here on Bucs Dugout, I'm a Rays fan who is over on Draysbay. Lately I've been following the Pirates a lot because of the Nady/Bay talks.

but today I want to ask you guys about Hickory pitcher Tom Boleska, he wasn't heralded to much out of High Point but he has pretty good numbers this year in Hickory. I covered him during his time at High Point and he really came on strong his last year. I was just wondering if anyone on here watches Hickory regularly or has seen him throw this year and how has he looked. Do you think he has a chance to become a fringe prospect or is he most likely going to ceiling out at AA or AAA? Thanks for the help and good luck to you guys the rest of the season. .

Wilbur Miller's (WTM) website is the place to get info on anyone in our system

BTW, I hope Pirates and Rays make a trade. You guys have lots of good prospects and could really use one or two of our bats. I see it as a trade that would work well for both teams.

Here is the link to Boleska:

May be out now

I saw Boleska pitch last Saturday at Hagerstown and he had a so-so game. A friend who was sitting with the scouts told me that a Toronto scout told him he liked Boleska a lot but his velocity was down (he was topping out around 90) from what it normally was. His breaking stuff looked OK but a bit erratic. After the game I heard he may go on the DL. IIRC it was an oblique strain or something like that. It didn’t sound like anything major.

He has been hurt for a bit

He is a pretty tough guy though, he had a few arm troubles while at Miami of Ohio but was fine at High Point and had put the arm problems behind. He definately had a few games in which the velocity wasn’t there but for the most part sat in the low to mid 90’s. That is good to hear though that some scouts are thinking highly of him. He wasn’t on many targets until his last season from what I understood. We also had another pitcher Eammon Portice, now in the Red Sox system who drew a bunch of scouts. From what I gathered a lot of the scouts who watched him would come away impressed by Boleska and his momentum built over the season.

If you want a second opinion...

...I think Mike Emeigh’s seen him pitch.

It seems to me (at least on this site)

that it’s more of a “we don’t want him batting 2nd” than “we hate you Freddy. go away” thing.

Dude, he's sucked since opening day

I can’t speak for others, but how much rope am I supposed to give? His OPS has been over .600 a grand total of 22 days this season, and that includes 6 days at the start of the season. Not once has he broken .600 since May 31. Dude, six… hundred! Just how fast did we turn on him? What’s the surprising part?

What UtesFan89 said anyway, but I wouldn’t take anyone to task for straight up hating him this year. We’re 98 games in. If not now, when?

The explosion is upon us

With three straight 3 hit games including 2 doubles and 2 HRs, Freddie’s all the way up to .597, Azi.

By my calculations, if he stays healthy (or at least on the field), hits about .360 with some doubles-i.e., he’s Freddie again-he can make .700 by the end of the year .

And we’ll all be looking forward to next year.

All true

But it doesn’t mean anyone should be surprised the fan base “turned on him” after his first 100 games this season.

i didn’t want to hijack this thread, but fine.

obviously freddy’s hitting has been terrible and there’s no way i’d try to deny that. i was referring to outright hostility that some fans seem to approach him with just two seasons removed from having his name chanted at the all star game. no doubt he’s performed below expectations, but compare with jason bay last year whose expectations were much higher and whose ops dropped 45 points, or one more than freddy’s has this year as of today. and as bay was, freddy is playing through an injury. i don’t remember the hostility towards jason bay last year. sure we decried his subpar performance but i’ve seen gamethreads where people seriously call for freddy to be demoted or worse, outright released in favor of brian bixler or rivas. i can’t remember anyone saying to release jason bay in favor of nate mclouth or nyjer morgan, even though both were arguably better replacements for the position than bixler or rivas.

OK, I don't want to argue

I was just saying I don’t think it’s surprising. Also, the difference with Bay was that he was still a near-average hitter, while Fred’s been one of, if not the worst position player is baseball, so his suckdom kinda stands out more.

By the way, I never called for release or anything like that, but I was solidly in the “move him down” camp, and speculated heavily the shoulder was a big problem.

I don't remember many people

calling for Freddy to be released. And the trading would’ve been a joke… you’re not going to get much of anything for a guy struggling (for whatever reason) as bad as Freddy is. And demotion… not sure. I don’t know how much it would’ve helped anyone.

At least as far as I remember, most people just wanted him moved down in the line-up.
