From Jason Stark, ESPN.com The price is too high
“Bay: The Pirates are asking for four players back—two sure-thing young players, one good prospect and a fourth prospect with upside.
Nady: A similar package, except they want three players instead of four—one sure thing, one good prospect and a third, more iffy, prospect. “
I agree….

You agree that
the price is too high?

wouldn't
“sure thing” imply minor-leagues?

Wouldn't someone like Longoria
be considered “sure-thing” or something?
Or someone like that? Young, in the majors right now and doing well… “sure-thing”.

Is The Price Too High?
There are only two words that ever must be conaidered in determining Bay’s, Nady’s or any other player’s value. Those two words are TALENT EVALUATION.
I would trade either one of them for two or three good prospects; however, my definition of a good prospect may be different than Huntington’s.
Huntington might get four players that don’t make it. Another GM might get two players and one or both might contribute.
There is no magic answer in terms of trades. It all comes down to TALENT EVALUATION.
by thegunner on Jul 24, 2008 5:54 PM EDT 0 recs
What will the market bear
While I agree with your observations, every commodity has a price that the market will bear and the Pirates seem to be asking more than the buyers will pay, at least at this time. Most high tier prospects have been evaluated and evaluated by those in the know, but you are right, a lot can not make the transition to the majors. This is where Huntington must be a better fortune teller (talent evaluator). The trading deadline is getting very close-I have faith a deal will be made for Bay, Nady, or Grabow, but definitely not at this price. I seriously doubt if Wilson and Marte will be dealt, as we’ll keep Marte for the draft picks and I don’t think anyone will want Wilson unless his price goes down-much like his batting average is going down.

Don't Drink the Kool-Aid
I won’t repeat anything I posted in the other downstream (on-topic) thread. But I got one question?
How did Billy Beanne become Billy Beanne? Not by saying “I’ve got to make a trade no matter what, so I’ll take what the good teams will offer me.” Billy says “if you want my good player(s) then you gotta give me solid value.”
If new PBC management wants to be Billy Beanne, then they gotta say “What would Billy Beanne do?” Not, “gotta make a deal to justify my existence, no matter what, so I’ll just take what they offer me.”

Jayson Stark

ESPN believes the Pirates are a farm team for the teams that they like to publicize.

No, he never said that. In fact, he said the Pirates were free to ask for whatever they wanted.
If what he reported is true (and it may not be), then the Pirates are asking too much. There is no honor or benefit to be gained from being unreasonable in one’s demands and then not making trades as a result.
You act as if there is a grand conspiracy against the Pirates. Why would there be, when other moribund teams like the Rays have had no problems making trades once they got a good GM? Was ESPN leading the charge against them, too? I’m not the world’s biggest ESPN fan, but I have problems believing they’re giving Jayson Stark marching orders to write that they should give up their stars for pennies on the dollar. (Especially since that’s not what he actually wrote.)

b.) It’s fast, but since they suck, too, the game ends with a score of 17-16
