Could someone point me to the evidence...

...revealing Coonelly’s preference for a Drive for the McClatchy Line team. I can’t find it.

Oh man, check out the first comment after the article
The Pirates can’t just trade their entire team away for prospects! That never works in baseball. Prospects just aren’t reliable enough in baseball. After 15 years we’re finally on the right track! Now they can’t just blow it by trading all their players! I’m sure this guy would love to see the Buccos trade their whole team away because it would make for a fantastic article. But that just isn’t a good idea and i hope the Pirates know it.

Right track?!? Really?

.500 or bust...

Hah

I was going to come on here and quote that, too. Getting most of my Pirate info from this site and Dejan, I sometimes forget there are a lot of people who think like this guy.

I'm skeptical....

For the past few weeks all we’ve heard is negative talk from other front offices about the Bucs. Presumably because they want the bucs to give away their players. I think this is just BS floated by other front offices as I think most of the complaints we’ve heard are.

Agreed

I’ve been thinking the same thing. Its amazing how often this stuff seem to be floating out of NYC, the home of two teams most desperate to make a move, but with two of the thinner farm systems of possible suitors for Nady and Marte. The are talking down the Pirates demands because they no they don’t have the prospect to meet them, while other teams like the Rays, Brewers, Cards, etc. do.

Hope so.

There were some positives in the article. Especially the comment by NH acknowledging that he needs to “turn this group over” and acquire as much talent as he can. Sure sounds like NH wants to do the right thing. If nothing happens by the deadline I would assume that FC has his hands on this ship tighter than we think.

For me, the most interesting part...

...was the ridiculous list of bonuses Randy Wolf is scheduled to earn. You go, Houston!

If Coonelly really is the reason the Lee/Shoppach/Gutierrez deal fell apart, as the article implies, then he can micromanage as much as he wants, as far as I’m concerned.

I liked the bit about us being able to get “anything we want” for Marte.

I agree...

with the Marte comment, that was encouraging and I was thinking the same thing about the Bay deal. Although it would be nice having Cliff Lee. I wonder who would bring more in a trade right now, Bay or Lee?

by Slick1 on Jul 25, 2008 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Bay ought to bring more

Like his predecessor, Bay is underrated.

Agreed.

Though on the whole, Giles > Bay.

by Vlad on Jul 25, 2008 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

McClatchifield traded Giles a year too late

I hope Coonington avoids this mistake.

And we just know Colletti, Torre and Lasorda want to bring Wilson and Bay to LA! What are they waiting for?

FWIW

Over at brewcrewball I posted an excerpt from that article about different teams scouting the Brewers AA team in Huntsville. One of the members had just returned from a visit there and commented that the statement in the article about the Pirates extensively scouting Huntsville were true.

The Brewers don’t need a position player, so I would guess that the two GMs have talked about a deal for pitching. Marte or Grabow?

by ol Pete on Jul 25, 2008 3:35 PM EDT reply actions

Would make sense.

And could be either one, honestly.

Not sure who we’d be watching. I’m sure the Bucs would love Escobar, but I don’t think that’s going to happen, and Brantley is supposedly on Cleveland’s PTBNL list for the Sabathia deal. Not too much pitching at that level…maybe Gillespie?

by Vlad on Jul 25, 2008 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Heard that the Brewers could be shopping JJ Hardy...

in the offseason along with Fielder. It would be a long shot but possibly Hardy and a AA prospect, freeing up a Wilson to LA deal? Wouldn’t happen in a million years but the Brewers middle infield defense drastically improves with Escobar up with the Brew Crew. Crazy and not a possibility but just throwing it out there.

by ElliottBayBucco on Jul 25, 2008 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Grabow might bring more to the pot...

considering the Brewers could use him beyond this season. If it was Marte and he signed with another team in the off season, the Brewers could potentially have six 1st round comp picks in next year’s draft for Sabathia, Sheets and Marte. Wow!

I take articles like this

with a huge grain of salt. Trade rumors are like spring training ball: we have no idea how truly representative it is of what is really going on. You just have to wait for the chips to fall, then make judgements. Rumors can be interesting discussion, but for the most part are absolutely worthless. Game theory: other GMs are very interested in lowering these players’ values, and pressure from a fan base urging a team to trade away their players could really help lower that value.

The funniest part of this article is that with how terrible the Rockies are this year, I didn’t realize that yes, they are still in contention. With the fifth worst record in all of baseball, they are only six games back from winning their division. Truly horrendous.

As for Cliff Lee, do you guys really think, even in hindsight, that he would be better to have right now than Bay? A guy who is just as old, who has shown only one year of good results in his career vs. a guy who has shown good results in all but one years of his career, and both are having good years now?

No doubt that there is a huge amount of worthless speculation, but the point is that the Pirates have and are scouting the Huntsville team.
