Stuff from Dejan...
Jeff Karstens will join the Pirates’ rotation immediately, though John Van Benschoten (tonight) and Yoslan Herrera (Tuesday) will each make his next start. Those performances will dictate who comes out.

If they have similar outings… who’s out? Does Herrera have the advantage because of his last outing?

John Grabow, Tyler Yates and Denny Bautista will share closer duties, but John Russell wants one of them to step up. No committee.

Alright… but unless you have one of them on your fantasy team (why???), I don’t think it matters. Though having Walkman pitch the 9th is kinda frightening in thought.

Ohlendorf needs to be stretched out in AAA before coming up to join the rotation, because he was working as a reliever. Does this mean that both Herrera & JVB will be out of the rotation when Ohlendorf is ready?

Maholm, Duke, Snell… Karstens & Ohlendorf?

Hell

It could be Sir Schizo Snell out with the way he has pitched.

I highly doubt it, but he has absolutely stunk this year.

I think Snell is out of options, so...

if he was out of the rotation they would have to move him to the bullpen.

He’s the prototypical moneyball player. He’s young and somewhat you can build around. Beane has restocked his system and still has a competitive team. I guess he thinks his club could compete within a couple of years. On the other hand, maybe after watching Neal in action he thinks he could really take adavantage. Don’t know but the A’s have some interesting pieces. Id still rather see TB pony up.

Bay A Moneyball Player???

I think not.

Bay is probably going to command BIG money if he plays out his current contract (the balance of this year plus 2009). He could be looking at an absolute minimum, 3 year, $30 million deal ($10 million per).

That is not Beane’s style. I think that Beane knows some other GM that wants Bay and would put together a package deal in the off-season.

by thegunner on Jul 26, 2008 8:34 PM EDT reply actions

Moneyball player now...

until he hits FA. Then he’s gone. Beane will take the picks, or trade him next year (or the off-season). That might be why they want him.

Because it’s highly unlikely he’s there after he becomes a FA.

What the f...?

We’re throwing in the towell in the 5th? All the comebacks we have had this year and JT is quitting in the friggin 5th inning?!!! I really think he needs to go. I know he’s done some good things this year but I think he’s been extremely lucky.

Thanks for Marte guys

Made Big Papi look silly today.

I really liked Kontos, and am kind of happy he’s staying. But on the other hand McCutchen has been pretty awesome at AAA and will contribute much faster than either Coke or Kontos.

Karstens, sorry to say, is not someone I’m really impressed with, but he will contribute much faster.

Wow I just checked the mlb box score and did not realize that T.J. Beam was in Pittsburgh.

Don’t sleep on Jose Tabata either. I know he’s raw -but he doesn’t become the 3rd rated prospect in the organization for nothing. The kid will develop power and will live up to his eternal potential.

Anyways it was a great trade for both teams. I’ll be following Karsten’s first start closely.
