Um...

Looks like Karstens and Jason Davis are the two additions to the 25 man roster with Munoz DFA’d to create a spot on the 40 man for Davis.
Either JVB’s start Friday gets skipped…Maholm would be back on 4 days rest…or one of Karstens/Davis gets the start in Wrigleyville.
Oh...
that’ll be fun.

Matskraic
Totally agree with you about Pearce. Russell and Huntington need to let him get his ABs.
He is a very confident and aggressive hitter, and, since not making the roster in spring training, the Pirates are doing everything possible to demoralize him.
The only justification, in my opinion, is if someone is interested in Michaels and we can get anything decent in return.
Relax folks ...
This isn’t Craig Wilson 2.0.
I’m sure having Jake Peavy on the mound has something to do with it.
Against Peavy
Freddy 0-5
Jack 4-16, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Eye Chart 4-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Black Hole 2-7, 1 HR, 1 RBI (I think Black Hole > White Hole, nicknamewise)
Jason-ity 2-9, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Chavez 0-1
—
Doumit 1-3
CGz 0-3, 1 RBI
Joey Bats 0-3

Peavy vs. Pearce
I saw this positively when I say that Pearce has a real chip on his shoulder.
He is not going to take a back seat to anybody. When he goes to the plate, he is a confident hitter.
To sit him against Peavy is a mistake unless they are showcasing Michaels (which is very doubtful).
He just had a day off
2 days ago though.
Does he really need to take a seat every other day?

There is no good reason, none, for Pearce not being installed as the regular, everyday RF for the rest of the season.

that the “rest of the season” starts tomorrow.

I have no problem with Michaels getting playing time. If Michaels were in AAA all year, would his numbers be better or worse than Pearce’s?
I like Michaels too.
I just think you have to find a way to get Pearce some time as well.
Unfortunately… the guys that deserve playing time (or need it) are… Jason-ity, Nate, Nate Sr., Pearce & Eye Chart (& maybe Black Hole now). Too many 1st basemen/OF guys… not enough spots.

Is Michaels going to be a significant part of this team if it ever turns into a winner? No. Might Pearce? Quite possibly.
This Drive for 75 mentality from fans, which really got fired up by the Nady trade, is driving me crazy.
My post has nothing to do with a drive for 75. I actually really like the Nady trade. If you are implying that I want Michaels in there because I think he has a chance to get us to 75, then you are crazy.
No problem.
It’s getting hard to tell lately. The Nady trade seemed to bring out a lot of people obsessed with the losing streak instead of rebuilding an entire organization. I didn’t instantly recognize your name, so thought you might be one of them!
Michaels might be playing better right now, but how this team (or anybody on it) is performing right now doesn’t really matter. Figuring out who is worth keeping around for five more years does.
Drive for 75
is a waste of time anyways.
If you’re driving for a number, at least get it up to 82.

Is Pearce going to be a part of the team that becomes a contender? Will it be McLouth, Cutch, and Tabata? Who knows, but I don’t see why Pearce deserves playing time with the Major League club. He needs to get his swing together, and I’m pretty sure its easier to do that in AAA than with the big club. In my opinion, Nate Sr. is the one that truly “deserves” the playing time. If he is not going to be a part of the future, might as well show him off so we can get some value out of him down the road.
I'm for
keeping Eye Chart & Michaels on the bench, as long as they don’t demand huge paydays.
They might not be starting material, but they’re helpful off the bench… especially compared to what we’ve had recently.

I don't know what everyone expected today
but this looks like your normal…every Sunday…lineup…where some bench guys (in this case Chavez, Nate Sr, and Minky (don’t know whether to consider him a starter or not) get some face time.
We will probably see Pearce for all the games against the Rox.
Except that
Freddy’s leading off and Eye Chart is batting 2nd.
Though maybe we saw something similar last week… I don’t remember.

Davis just up for long relief. Karstens going in JVB’s starting slot. Also noted that D McCutchen starting for Indy today, and Ohlendorf goes Tuesday.
Is it the same Jason Davis that pitched for the Red Sox a couple years back?
We were in Red Sox country at the time, and I remember that everyone seemed to hate him.
And then I got to see Carl Crawford steal home on him.
Just random FYI. :)

suprised
i really thought he would be DFA’ed after last night.
No offense to JVB
But I really wish we would rid ourselves of him…...
Every time he toes the mound it is a wicked reminder of the Littlefield Era.

PIrates Prospects
Do you guys think that Tabata and D. McCutchen are our #2 and #3 prospects now?
I'd like
this lineup better if Freddy & Jack were switched.

Two weeks ago i would have agreed with that but not the way Jack has been hitting lately.
Why is that wimp out of the game?

Wilson's stats
0 Hrs in 200 ABs only 13 RBIs
We couldn’t get even get DeJesus for him
Nope
But bad idea to intentional plunk the leadoff hitter in a 0-0 game. 2 outs and nobody on is a much better time.
bench clearing brawl alert
Minkie due up first
Yeah, I know
but watching Gameday doesn’t let you know how the pitch looked, y’know?

Chavez ...
is an OUTSTANDING receiver and a GREAT defensive catcher. Peavy got a great jump on his attempted steal and Chavez still nailed him.
This is obviously why he has lasted so long in professional baseball.
The Pirates should find a place for him in the organization after he retires. He would be fabulous with Spansih-speaking players, particularly catchers and pitchers.
I believe he is niow about 35.
The Pirates should keep him on the roster next year as a #2 catcher.
It's called "the element of surprise!"
Some teams take calculated risks.
Peavy is a good athlete.
There are 2 outs, so if he gets thrown out, Gonzalez still leads off the next inning. In a 1-1 game, it’s worth a try.
Jeebus,
these Gonzalez boys are fugly, ain’t they?
Heh.

Maholm's line
7IP 4H 1ER 3BB 9K’s
3.79 ERA
Get this man a run
They just ran a montage of Maholm's nine Ks
I think like seven of them were Padres waving at his curveball.
Noticed during the break before the bottom of the 7th...
that both Maholm and Peavy were looking at their fingers…like maybe blister problems were developing.
Kind of surprised that wasn't caught
That hung up there seemingly a long time.

To pour salt in the wound
Here’s “Arm” McCutchen’s line
6IP 7H 4ER 2BB 3K’s
Not a quality start by any means
We don't have
a best reliever left…at least until the Mad Capper gets back.
Once again
It’s Eye Chart defending his team and not the furniture piece we call a manager.
Let's make Minky the manager
after this season
In favor
I think a lot of the talk about Eye Chart and what a gritty hard-nosed gamer blah blah blah is overdone garbage, but it IS obvious that at least he cares. Which is more than we can say for Russell.
Russell's just a figurehead
I wouldn’t mind Varsho being a Bucco manager either.
Mientkiewicz
Matskraic is right. He is a lot of bluster. My guess is that most of the teammates that ever played with him weren’t enamored by him. He looks like a real pop-off.
I'd rather
have the bluster than the passiveness that’s been the hallmark for these players for the last few years…

Yeah
At this point, I’m sick of Russell. Since he obviously doesn’t care, let’s at least put somebody in charge who does. I never thought I’d pine for the days of Lloyd McClendon, but here I am a-pining.
The tipping point for me was that game a few weeks ago when Eye Chart argued a safe call at second base, and Russell trotted out, made a feeble effort to get between Minky and the ump, then just stood there and watched.
JR
got us the homerun call on Freddy’s hit in HOU the other day, no?

I agree
I agree 100 percent. The guy is a mouse and has not heart. The only thing I hate more than having him refuse to leave the dugout is Jeff Andrews making five trips to the mound every game. I like Huntington and Coonley but they sure picked a couple of bums in these two.
Why Is LaRoche On The Bench?
It looks like the double switch genius of Russell has moved our hottest hotter who has long ball ability to the bench. What’s the story?
It wouldn't have matter anyway
LaRoche was due up first.
Still surprised at the move.

LaRoche was yanked because of a trade or near trade? I’d be surprised if we found someone to give us anything for him, but otherwise I don’t understand why he’d be pulled from the game.
