JVB bus ticket to Indy
http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/pbc/default.aspx
Looks like Karstens and Jason Davis are the two additions to the 25 man roster with Munoz DFA’d to create a spot on the 40 man for Davis.
Either JVB’s start Friday gets skipped…Maholm would be back on 4 days rest…or one of Karstens/Davis gets the start in Wrigleyville.

Matskraic
Totally agree with you about Pearce. Russell and Huntington need to let him get his ABs.
He is a very confident and aggressive hitter, and, since not making the roster in spring training, the Pirates are doing everything possible to demoralize him.
The only justification, in my opinion, is if someone is interested in Michaels and we can get anything decent in return.

Peavy vs. Pearce
I saw this positively when I say that Pearce has a real chip on his shoulder.
He is not going to take a back seat to anybody. When he goes to the plate, he is a confident hitter.
To sit him against Peavy is a mistake unless they are showcasing Michaels (which is very doubtful).

I like Michaels too.
I just think you have to find a way to get Pearce some time as well.
Unfortunately… the guys that deserve playing time (or need it) are… Jason-ity, Nate, Nate Sr., Pearce & Eye Chart (& maybe Black Hole now). Too many 1st basemen/OF guys… not enough spots.

Is Michaels going to be a significant part of this team if it ever turns into a winner? No. Might Pearce? Quite possibly.
This Drive for 75 mentality from fans, which really got fired up by the Nady trade, is driving me crazy.
by matskralc on Jul 27, 2008 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My post has nothing to do with a drive for 75. I actually really like the Nady trade. If you are implying that I want Michaels in there because I think he has a chance to get us to 75, then you are crazy.
by Bucsfanatic on Jul 27, 2008 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No problem.
It’s getting hard to tell lately. The Nady trade seemed to bring out a lot of people obsessed with the losing streak instead of rebuilding an entire organization. I didn’t instantly recognize your name, so thought you might be one of them!
Michaels might be playing better right now, but how this team (or anybody on it) is performing right now doesn’t really matter. Figuring out who is worth keeping around for five more years does.

Is Pearce going to be a part of the team that becomes a contender? Will it be McLouth, Cutch, and Tabata? Who knows, but I don’t see why Pearce deserves playing time with the Major League club. He needs to get his swing together, and I’m pretty sure its easier to do that in AAA than with the big club. In my opinion, Nate Sr. is the one that truly “deserves” the playing time. If he is not going to be a part of the future, might as well show him off so we can get some value out of him down the road.

Chavez ...
is an OUTSTANDING receiver and a GREAT defensive catcher. Peavy got a great jump on his attempted steal and Chavez still nailed him.
This is obviously why he has lasted so long in professional baseball.
The Pirates should find a place for him in the organization after he retires. He would be fabulous with Spansih-speaking players, particularly catchers and pitchers.
I believe he is niow about 35.
The Pirates should keep him on the roster next year as a #2 catcher.

It's called "the element of surprise!"
Some teams take calculated risks.
Peavy is a good athlete.
There are 2 outs, so if he gets thrown out, Gonzalez still leads off the next inning. In a 1-1 game, it’s worth a try.

Let's make Minky the manager
after this season

In favor
I think a lot of the talk about Eye Chart and what a gritty hard-nosed gamer blah blah blah is overdone garbage, but it IS obvious that at least he cares. Which is more than we can say for Russell.

Russell's just a figurehead
I wouldn’t mind Varsho being a Bucco manager either.

Mientkiewicz
Matskraic is right. He is a lot of bluster. My guess is that most of the teammates that ever played with him weren’t enamored by him. He looks like a real pop-off.

I'd rather
have the bluster than the passiveness that’s been the hallmark for these players for the last few years…

Yeah
At this point, I’m sick of Russell. Since he obviously doesn’t care, let’s at least put somebody in charge who does. I never thought I’d pine for the days of Lloyd McClendon, but here I am a-pining.
The tipping point for me was that game a few weeks ago when Eye Chart argued a safe call at second base, and Russell trotted out, made a feeble effort to get between Minky and the ump, then just stood there and watched.

JR
got us the homerun call on Freddy’s hit in HOU the other day, no?
Jeebus, you make it sound like Tracy was Murtaugh compared to JR.

I did?
I don’t remember bringing up Tracy at all.

didn't say you did.
I was making a comparison. Obviously, not an apparent one.

If it counts
I like Russell more than I did Tracy.

I agree
I agree 100 percent. The guy is a mouse and has not heart. The only thing I hate more than having him refuse to leave the dugout is Jeff Andrews making five trips to the mound every game. I like Huntington and Coonley but they sure picked a couple of bums in these two.

Why Is LaRoche On The Bench?
It looks like the double switch genius of Russell has moved our hottest hotter who has long ball ability to the bench. What’s the story?

It wouldn't have matter anyway
LaRoche was due up first.
Still surprised at the move.
Yates should’ve been pitching instead

What are the chances...
LaRoche was yanked because of a trade or near trade? I’d be surprised if we found someone to give us anything for him, but otherwise I don’t understand why he’d be pulled from the game.
Good day.
