Old habits die hard

According to this rumor site, Nutting recently nixed a trade of Jason Bay to the Braves for prospects. Assuming Nutting made his decision in order to address non-baseball considerations, it'd be hard not to conclude that he did it so that the Pirates might 'Drive for 75' this year.

Given the return for Bay as reported, which featured Lillibridge and Jones, I'm grateful Nutting killed the deal. The Pirates can dump Bay's salary in the winter. I say this because the return was not enough for Bay.

Braves beat reporter

The report came from a Braves beat report. After the Nady/Marte deal my general feeling would be that the Braves beat reporter was full of cr@p.

Why?

One might doubt the claim that Nutting killed the deal. But the Nady/Marte trade established the Pirates willingness to sell low.

Sell low?

Nady/Bay trade seems to establish ownership is willing to gamble on upside and add organizational depth by dealing players that won’t be on the next good Pirates team. If you let that deal go through, why veto a trade of Bay?

Plus I have gotten to the general point that I don’t believe any reporters at the deadline. They are being fed misinformation from unrealiable sources. Being used by disingenous sources. Journalistic standards in sports reporting are low enough. At the dealine it is a bad joke.

And since you brought up “the trade” I guess I will add…... I must have a completely different view than you. The Nady/Bay trade was not selling low. It was a classic case of selling high and buying low. Something I quite frankly advocate given the Pirates situation. Whether Tabata turns out to be a mistake or not…...

Sold low
And since you brought up "the trade" I guess I will add…… I must have a completely different view than you.

It would seem that way.

Debunking this one would have required

evidence showing Nutting did not make this decision. The PG lacked this evidence.

??

So you take the word of some writer in Atlanta? Trade rumors are kinda the Roswell incident.

by buccoben on Jul 28, 2008 11:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nope

His report is just information. Kovacevic’s too.

??

Since today’s Post gave more info than the Atl. writer I guess that tips the evidence in favor of it being BUNK.

Nope

Neither reporter finds corroborating sources for his report. Nor can either reporter rule out that their sources lied to them. Both are marked by uncertainty, too much uncertainty to take at face value, that is, to treat as evidence.

Dejan's bit...

...indicated high-level anonymous sourcing from both orgs. In my mind, that’s reasonably credible.

The problem with that one...

...is the assumption that the Braves and Pirates are telling the truth about this one. I tend to take these reports with a large grain of salt.

For what it’s worth, someone told me that the current perception of the Pirates has the Nuttings making decisions like this: Killing a Bay deal, for instance. This rumor may reflect a consensus opinion about the Pirates more than an accurate appraisal of an event.

I think the Atlanta media...

is taking a page out of the NY media text book. Maybe there is something going on here and this is there attempt to try and drive the price tag down. I don’t know exactly how this would work but this is hauntingly familiar to the runor that came out saying that Coonely was handcuffing NH in order to make a run at .500. Maybe clubs have the perception that if they turn the public pressure on us they can get us to cave to the pressure. We keep saying we don’t want to trade Bay but I can’t help but think that NH knows that he is more valuable now than he would be in the winter. Maybe the talks with Atlanta are a little more serious than we think. Wasn’t it Friday where Braves players reported that they expected to walk into the clubhouse and hear that they had traded for Bay?

I know their outfielders

are all substandard right now, but the Braves aren’t idiots, and I have a hard time believing that given their record and place in the standings they really think they can make a run at a playoff spot that pretty obviously is going to go to the Mets, Phillies, Cubs or Brewers. So what would they want with Bay for this year? Their real problem is Smoltz may be finished and Glavine hasn’t pitched much, so they’re trotting out people like Chuck James. Well, that and their outfield DOES suck. But I don’t think adding Bay by himself would help them make up three places and 7.5 games.
