Astros vs. Pirates, 7 July 2008

Houston @ Pittsburgh

Runelvys Hernandez vs. Phil Dumatrait, 7:05.

As a Pirates fan, I'd like to extend a warm "thank you" to the Astros for starting Runelvys Hernandez in this game. Hernandez, you'll recall, posted an 8.47 ERA in four starts for the Indianapolis Indians last year. The Bucs are coming off a very tough series against the Brewers that dropped them to last place, and the indifference with which the Astros are treating this game--and the possibility that they themselves might wind up in last place if they lose--is simply heartwarming.

Will Dumatrait make it 3 innings?

Inquiring minds want to know.

by Hitman Easler on Jul 7, 2008 7:24 PM EDT   0 recs

I don't know...

but I think Dumatrait borrowed the rocket launcher that Duke used in the first inning yesterday.

Doesn't anyone check those things??

I give JR credit for the team showing up most every night ...

and fighting despite the atrocious pitching. However, he manages a game like a turd burglar.

Eh...

Runelvys still in there.

by Hitman Easler on Jul 7, 2008 8:45 PM EDT   0 recs

Why are Dumatriat and Snell back?

Why not wait till after the All-Star break to bring them back? We’d only have to fill in three games (Monday, Tuesday, Sunday) with our AA/AAA guys (Taubenheim, Herrera, Barthmeier) because of the day off Wednesday. Sunday you can empty the bullpen, too.

Dumatriat and Snell could’ve returned on 7/19 and 7/21, giving them 12 extra days of rest each.

by gregg on Jul 7, 2008 8:45 PM EDT   0 recs

Herrera and Barthmaier

both are pitching tonight. It’s possible we could see Taubenheim as a starter Wednesday or Thursday, with JVB starting the other game. And then Maholm…Duke and the staff (probably Dumatrait) into the break.

by Thunder on Jul 7, 2008 8:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That may be a first....

Hernandez gives up the first career hit to two different pitchers in the same game.

by Hitman Easler on Jul 7, 2008 8:52 PM EDT   0 recs

We need to get another pitcher out there

soon.
One that needs a 1st career hit, if possible.

We'll probably see something from Elias Sports Bureau

about 3 pitchers getting their first ML hit and RBI in the same game.

For anything positive

that would be a shock. For bad stats, especially pitching, I figure they will find their way in somehow.

by Thunder on Jul 7, 2008 9:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Would this be a good or bad stat?

Especially given that 2 of the pitchers are on the Buccos.

Brad Lincoln has Piratesitis

5 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1 WP.

by Thunder on Jul 7, 2008 9:09 PM EDT   0 recs

On the bright side...

He still isn’t walking anyone. :)

by Hitman Easler on Jul 7, 2008 9:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Why walk

when you can just hit rockets all day?

by Thunder on Jul 7, 2008 9:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Not just yet...

the walk total is too low.

Everyone gets hit hard sometimes

Good pitcher’s bad games tend to look a little more like this, though, rather than 2.2 IP, 8 ER, 4 BB, 1 K

by DITO on Jul 7, 2008 9:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Your criticism of Lincoln

is off base from what I`ve been reading. He is throwing with good velocity and showing excellent command. This is about as much as can be expected coming off the surgery/lay off that he had.
We need to get him through the year without any other medical problems, build up arm strength, and hope that he`ll be on the fast track to Pittsburgh a year from now.

Bautista

8IP as a Pirate and only 1 BB after 14BB in 19IP with Detroit. That’s a good sign.

by gregg on Jul 7, 2008 9:25 PM EDT   0 recs

Looking for my scorecard funzone

Please JR—PH Bautista for Bautista!!

by WstCstBucco on Jul 7, 2008 9:25 PM EDT   0 recs

JR's no-funzone

Double play serves him right!!

But Bautista has a chance to be the pitcher of record for three games in a row..

by WstCstBucco on Jul 7, 2008 9:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nope

Yates got the loss on Saturday.

by Thunder on Jul 7, 2008 9:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sorry

I meant the last 3 games Bautista has pitched in. Wednesday, Sunday and tonight.

by WstCstBucco on Jul 7, 2008 9:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Must be pitchers hit night

even Pedro has a hit and an RBI.

by Thunder on Jul 7, 2008 9:27 PM EDT   0 recs

Walkman

Just mowed down 3 pretty good hitters.

by Hitman Easler on Jul 7, 2008 9:33 PM EDT   0 recs

Yates

6 up 6 down, 19 pitches. WTF?

by Hitman Easler on Jul 7, 2008 9:48 PM EDT   0 recs

gets a gold star for tonight.

A win over the Astros,

who started Runelvys Hernandez. Hopefully they`ll dig up John Wasdin for tomorrow.

The bullpen did do a great job, to be fair.
