Astros vs. Pirates, 9 July 2008

Houston Astros @ Pittsburgh Pirates

Brian Moehler vs. John Van Benschoten, 7:05 PM.

Well, this pitching matchup should be awesome.

[Looking offstage] Is "awesome" the right word?

from dejan's game story today

“According to Stats Inc., Van Benschoten’s career ERA of 9.04 is the highest in Major League Baseball’s modern history - since 1900 - for any pitcher with 16 or more career starts.”

now that’s impressive.

by johnnycuff on Jul 9, 2008 4:30 PM EDT   0 recs

What's really impressive . . .

. . . is that all he has to do to make his ERA go down is allow exactly one earned run per inning.

by WTM on Jul 9, 2008 5:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You got the AW right...

my choice of words however…would be…AWFUL.

by Thunder on Jul 9, 2008 5:27 PM EDT   0 recs

Awesome obviously describing

the offensive explosion we’re gonna see tonight.

The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!
Playing For Pride. Pirates, Utes, Panthers, and more...
Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".

Bucs

McLouth CF
Ugh 2B
Doumit C
Bay LF
Nady RF
LaRoche 1B
Mientkiewicz 3B
JVB P
Wilson SS

by Hitman Easler on Jul 9, 2008 6:25 PM EDT   0 recs

third verse, same as the first (well, almost)

same lineup as game 1 of the series, except swap Ugh for 0for3vas, and JVB for Dumatrait

fun fact: in this series, Dumatrait and Snell both did not get out of the 4th inning, but the Pirates won those games. how much you wanna bet that trend ends tonight?

oh, and boxscore: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=280709123

I think

Romulo is already warming up in the pen.

by Hitman Easler on Jul 9, 2008 6:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Which trend?

The Pirates winning or the starters not getting out of the 4th inning?

I hate to be a pessimist, but

I’d be surprised to see JVB make it out of the 2nd inning, let alone the Pirates win this game.

by humbucker on Jul 9, 2008 7:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

My guess is top 3

3 runs in, 2 on base, he gets yanked.

Hope we are both wrong, but I say we need at least 6 to win tonght.

by Hitman Easler on Jul 9, 2008 7:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

he might not get out of the 1st.

3 runs in, 2 on base… 1st inning

by humbucker on Jul 9, 2008 7:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

2nd/7th

I know Freddy had a good night last night, but since we continue to hit the pitcher in the 8 spot wouldn’t it make sense to move Freddy into the 7th spot and let Jack or even the 3b platoon of Doug and Jose bat in the 2 spot?

Just a thought.

by Brakeman8 on Jul 9, 2008 6:38 PM EDT   0 recs

In his career

Jason-ity is 2-11 against Moehler.

Black Hole (old) is 6-14.
WTF?/Ugh (whatever) is 4-8.

Ha...

You know things are bad when you have to identify which Black Hole.

by Hitman Easler on Jul 9, 2008 7:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

So I guess

we hope that Gorzo gets his problems straightened out before the All Star break. Otherwise we don’t have a 5th starter…because I think that Huntingdon is currently doing the paperwork to DFA JVB.

by Thunder on Jul 9, 2008 7:16 PM EDT   0 recs

Well, that was quite unexpected.

by Arnold Rothstein on Jul 9, 2008 7:16 PM EDT   0 recs

The only thing unexpected about this inning

is that there is no one up in the bullpen yet.

by Thunder on Jul 9, 2008 7:18 PM EDT   0 recs

Man

Has there ever been a MLB pitcher this bad?

by Hitman Easler on Jul 9, 2008 7:19 PM EDT   0 recs

I look a way for 5 minutes.

And it’s already 3-0.

by UtesFan89 on Jul 9, 2008 7:21 PM EDT   0 recs

No it's not

it’s 4-0…and only because the pitcher struck out.

by Thunder on Jul 9, 2008 7:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Gah

I missed a run.

OK

This is just sad now.

Bucs are just humiliating him by sticking him out there.

by Hitman Easler on Jul 9, 2008 7:24 PM EDT   0 recs

Guess we will see

a reliever called up tomorrow. This will make 3 games in a row the starter doesn’t make it past the 4th.

Nate

I guess I don't follow the Pirates front office very closely

Nutting is chairman of the board for the Pirates? Is that the same position he held last year?

by thielcats on Jul 9, 2008 7:50 PM EDT   0 recs

Out of his msery...

I’m not expecting Rick Ankiel, but why not try JVB as a hitter already in Single A? His pitching is miserable.

by Mike G, DC on Jul 9, 2008 7:52 PM EDT   0 recs

That ship has sailed

He can’t swing like he used to due to his shoulders.

by Hitman Easler on Jul 9, 2008 7:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Hey, all

thought I’d try to watch again, who knows, maybe a starting pitcher for the Bucs won’t suc…oh… welp….

See ya later, like, probably next year… :(

.500 or bust...

by phillybucco on Jul 9, 2008 7:55 PM EDT   0 recs

BTW

Mulder for the Cards is injured in the first inning of the Phils/Cards game… just looks like he blew out his throwing arm. Scully unavailable for comment.

serious Clark?

After the Cubs and Brewers just made huge pitching acquisitions

the situation will probably be even more magnified.

allow JVB to give those 3 right back JR.

by Hitman Easler on Jul 9, 2008 8:17 PM EDT   0 recs

JVB’s era has gone down from the start of the day

by richmondpirate on Jul 9, 2008 8:32 PM EDT   0 recs

get Brad Ausmus out?

by Hitman Easler on Jul 9, 2008 8:40 PM EDT   0 recs

what a strange thing to say

but answer: No.

JVB just walked the pitcher. He’s gone.
