you'd think

The Bucs would have a better image of Karstens to use on their front page. The Sloth from Goonies impression is an odd choice.

Dejan
Forget the pitcher hitting eighth. Same thing with Nate McLouth batting leadoff. Russell explained that, in losing his Nos. 4 and 5 hitters, he and Gary Varsho and Don Long decided to restructure things to get McLouth in the heart. Good chance Freddy Sanchez will bat leadoff when he is healthy

and…
Brandon Moss will play right field rather than left, but just for one day, to allow him to get “acclimated,” Russell said.
...
Steve Pearce is going to play right field regularly the rest of the way. That makes Moss, McLouth and Pearce the default outfield. Just not in there today so that Moss could be in right.

Charlie:

I’ve been waiting to read a response to our friend, Jayson Stark’s latest article of crap.

Damn shame he can’t read an article that Jerry Crasnick had written a couple of days prior to yesterday.

Hope Bay has been working on his interviewee skills, being in Boston will keep him busy for a long time with the coverage they receive nationally.

Stark

He actually doesn’t bash us too much other than putting us in “loser” column. He basically says we should have gotten a Longoria-type prospect, even though we tried for weeks and everyone was screaming at us because our prices were too high. Honestly, it wasn’t a bad trade for anyone, but we’ll see how things play out.

Media

The media will never, ever give good grads to a team that trades established players for younger players or prospects. You have to go on the Internet now to get any kind of fair analysis of these types of deals. It’s just reality and nothing to get worked up about (not that you were, just making a point).

whew

Sound like the scouting reports were pretty good… didn’t they say good stuff with control issues?

by BadMaafala on Aug 1, 2008 3:36 PM EDT reply actions

Not sure about that, but...
Sheer diversity is Karsten’s specialty. Karstens does not have a dominating pitch. He sports an average fastball, curveball, and slider. His best pitch is an above average changeup (probably a 55 pitch on the 20-80 scale), which is where he generates a lot of his weak fly outs.

From Pending Pinstripes.

That out pitch to Soto? Was a change-up.

by UtesFan89 on Aug 1, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Also from Pending Pinstripes
Karstens has always had good control, which is part of the reason why he has eaten a lot of innings in the minors. His career minor league BB/9 is 2.29. Last season, he walked 55 in those 190.1 innings, or 2.60 per 9. There is no doubt in my mind that Karstens can maintain that walk rate in the majors.

go ahead

argue it, i dare you

karstens = righthanded zach duke. low 90’s…hits his spots, he gets grounders, doesnt and he gives up line drives (which will be homers in cincinnati).

moss = nate jr (i say this because everything talks about him as not quite a corner bat, not quite centerfield D…15-20 HR power….bat plays well in PNC. SAME stuff that was said about nate.

Karstens and Moss ...

look very interesting, but, what I’d really like to see is cage-match …
Karstens/Olendorff (Yankees) vs. Moss/Hansen (Red Sox) with the
survivor(s) taking on LaRoche/Morris (Dodgers).

Right? Because Karstens/Ohlendorf or Moss/Hansen or Luigi/Morris isn’t 1 man… it’s a team.

tip of the cap to Karstens

He made our guys look awfully foolish today.

If you had told me that Marquis would give us 6 innings of 3 run ball I’d have assumed the cubs would win, especially with the way we were hitting in Milwaukee.
