Players can become FAs after 6 years of major league service time
I know Laroche, Moss, Ohlendorf, Hansen and Karstens all had some major league service time befor joining the Bucs but I am not sure how much. So one would think that if at the end of this season the new players have less than a year of service time, we can contol them for 6 more seasons if more than one but less than two, then 5 more seasons. It is not quite that simple, since players get credited for a year of service time for something like 172 days while the season actually runs for 180 days or so.
I’m pretty sure we’ll control everyone for at least 5 more years though.
Rain delay?

Daniel McCutchen
Today he is still in the game through 5 innings he has 4 strikeouts no walks and 2 runs both on solo home runs again, leading 4-2
We're gonna have to
come up with some kind of abbreviation for the McCutchens.
ACutch and DCutch from now on, please!

Duke
It’s probably time to stop blaming stuff the pitching coach did to him two-and-a-half years ago. This is on him now. He’s beyond awful at this point.
Duke just struck out the opposing pitcher!
swinging, on a full count!
goodness how exciting… oh wait, another error. Back to earth…
And erased
on the fielder’s choice.

... and out at third on Gomez' FC.
how does this happen? with first base open, you don’t have to run on such a play, Pearce….
Who needs errors
when you can just give up hit after hit?

Duke's pitch count
69 pitches thru 3 innings:
1st – 29
2nd – 20
3rd – 20
the Pirates defense certainly isn’t helping, by giving the Mets an extra out each inning, but Duke has been remarkably inefficient thus far.
bottom of the 4th inning -- Pirates now have more baserunners than errors!
here’s the chance to tie it up, though. I’ll go with Pearce for the error this inning (great job leaving the bases loaded in the top of the inning).
No error that inning!
Now if only we could score…...

I’d really like to see them resign him for another year or two.
Seconded.

If I understand the rule correctly
Duke is still alive to keep our quality start steak alive since two of the runs are unearned. He still needs to finish one more inning and I wouldn’t think he’d hit if his turn comes up but it still wouldn’t surprise me to see JR to send him up there with the wood in his hand with, say, the bases loaded and one out.
Never mind that, I see there is already two out.;
Damn
another homer for the Mets.

It is hard for me to understand why the Dodgers didn't claim Dunn
just to block AZ. I doubt the Reds would have allowed the Dodgers to have him for nothing just to dump the salary, but even if they did the Dodgers would then get the comp picks.
If they'd claimed Dunn
That’d given the Dodgers 6 starting outfielders.
P.S. Dude, sorry I almost ripped-off your handle.
Duke
6 innings, 3 ER (so far)
Does that count as a “quality” start?

I guess that means that the Pirates run is over.
So sad… the team was doing so well during this stretch.

I think so, by a strict literal definition.
but ‘leading’ your team to a 5-1 deficit is not very high quality.
at least the errors seem to have subsided. between the shoddy D and the bad baserunning early on, I would say it looked like a Little League game, but that would be an insult to Little League players.
wait a minute, the score is now 5-2?
Huh?
Who sacrifices with a 3 run deficit in the 7th? Was McClouth bunting for a base hit? It’s crazy—he’s the team’s no. 1 slugger. Is JR trying to avoid big innings?
Nate
sac bunting. :(

he was bunting for a base hit, he was upset with himself after the bunt

They have been in the Majors before
They should know how to hit
Duaner Sanchez
Another good pitcher Littlefield just gave up on. Anyone remember what PBC got for him? I guess he just threw too hard. :)
Sanchez just waived
tAnd I’m guessing there were about a dozen guys kept on the 40 man roster at that time that are out of BB now.
BTW anyone remember when the Mets hid the fact that Sanchez was in a serious car accident and made a quick deal to steal Hernandez and Perez from the PBC (though the team did get X-man)? Oh that DL—what a scamp. :(
FWIW
I knew at the time that Sanchez had been in a serious car accident.
It had been in the news for a bit… did DL really not know that?

Yep -- DL was totally ignorant
NY Daily News says “General manager Omar Minaya, who two weeks earlier was unwilling to trade outfielder Xavier Nady to Pittsburgh, kept the accident quiet as he reengaged Pirates GM Dave Littlefield about a deal.”
0-2 double
have to pitch with better location there
very odd...
... an intentional walk that did NOT come back to bite us.
and now 4 straight errorless innings! wooo!
And now one of the hardest throwing RP in the majors
are pitching to the PBC rooks. Nice of JR to put them 3 in a row in the batting order.
who
is Mets closer? Wagner’s hurt..

sorry, I'm not sure (I'm in St L)
5000 games is a LOT of baseball (30 years?). I know that Lanny was the Pirates announcer in the mid-80s, but exactly when did he start? and were all 5000 of these games announcing the Pirates?

so the Pirates won?!?
the yahoo boxscore has been stuck on the 3-2 count to Beltran for several minutes now.
yahoo gameday locked
up with 3/2 count, no outs lol.. turned the radio on(i hate greg brown) and heard him talking about the win
Nice
I’ve said many times, I could care less whether they finish .500 this year, as long as there’s a sign that this team is on the rise. Well, here’s another example. Great game, sorry I missed it while at work, but it sounded fun.
Did anyone watch? How did Duke perform after the 1st? I think he actually gets credit with a quality start if you can believe it. 6IP, 3ER
Buster Olney on Alvarez negoitations
Pedro Alvarez, the second overall pick in the June draft, will eventually sign a deal with the Pirates before Friday’s deadline, writes John Perotto.
I hope he’s right. I hope Alvarez is not caught in the crossfire of negotiations between two serious negotiators—the Pirates’ Frank Coonelly, who was once the caretaker of Major League Baseball’s slotting system, and Alvarez’s advisor, Scott Boras.
Agents who’ve dealt with Coonelly say they absolutely could see the executive drawing a line in the sand and sticking to it, rather than capitulating in the 24th hour—no matter the criticism this would engender for the new regime in Pittsburgh. And Boras’ history, as we all know, is that he has demonstrated a willingness to keep his players unsigned if he thinks they are not receiving offers commensurate with their perceived value. Just ask J.D. Drew. Just ask Jason Varitek.
http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=olney_buster
The sad part of all this contract fiasco
is that, even if we get Alvarez in uniform in the next several days, there isn`t enough time for him to play more than a handful of minor league games this season. If he had signed in June, we would already know if we could reasonably expect him in the majors sometime next season. Would this have played a part in deciding what to do with Jose Bautista for 2009 now that we have Andy LaRoche?
