chavez - game calling
I’m as happy as anyone that Doumit has established himself as an adequate catcher with a big bat. But I still have the nagging feeling (I know this is a minority position on this board) that the pitching might be better if Doumit were a more experienced/better game caller. Particularly in the case of Snell, who seems very predictable and having little interest in actually fooling the hitters. So I have been hoping that Chavez would catch one of his games to see if that might make a difference. Tonight Chavez is catching, so I manage to get this post up before the game. My comment won’t be hindsight if it goes well, though more likely I will look like an idiot by the end of the first inning if Snell throws his usual 30 pitches.
Don't think so
I had read (don’t remember where) that unlike Lazybones Tracy, JR calls all of the pitches from the dugout. So I don’t believe that the catchers have anything to do with calling the game.
If this is true, the only variable between catchers on balls and strikes calls would be their ability to “frame” the pitches. But I don’t even think that framing the pitch is universally recognized, beyond Tim McCarver, Joe Buck and Eric Karros, as something that actually has been proven to affect an umpire’s judgment.

note that Yahoo now thinks the two A. LaRoches in the lineup are the same player (before, Andy’s link in boxscores would go to the player index)….
Pearce back in the line-up.
I don’t get why we can’t bat Nate leadoff and Freddy near the bottom though.
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!

Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".
Now
I’m alright with that type of lead-off hitting

Wonder if the Reds announcers have the true story.
George Grande said the Pirates two choices last night were to put Jack on the DL or send Bautista down. Sounds like cutting Rivas or Gomez was never considered.
Gah Nate...
you need JR to move you back to leadoff or something.
This just isn’t working.

Nibble, nibble, nibble
c’mon Ian, just throw the ball over the plate. Oh well, Encarnacion just pulled a Pearce. Out of the inning.
Reds announcer Brennaman isn't too bad...
I was on a cross country flight that had xm radio, meaning I could listen to a game. A listener e-mailed Brennaman asking him if John Miller from ESPN was to challenge him to a duel, what weapon would he choose and who would win. Brennaman answers he would choose a harpoon and bring the whale down.
He also got into Griffey Jr.s face when Grif was pissed about comments made of him not running out a grounder. Brennaman says something along the lines of I was here long before you got here and I’ll be here long after you are gone!

And on all 11 pitches
he looked like he was swinging flat-footed. All arms on the swings, no legs.

If i had direct tv

Just got in
doesn’t look like Snell is doing TOO bad?
Anyone watching?

A normal Snell start
nibble here, nibble there, gopher ball to someone that shouldn’t hit one. And WAY too many pitches.
Business
as usual.
Not throwing inside, is he?

I had to.
I didn’t expect any other answer than “no,” though.

93 pitches in 5 innings for Snell
that was 8 innings worth for Maholm last night.
ergo
Maholm > Snell.
Do you think he’ll be fighting for a rotation spot come Spring?

He keeps this crap up
and he will be battling for a roster spot.
Gameday
says, in play, no out – and flied to right 1 out?

wilson flew out to right, moved sanchez to third. then mclouth struckout, and adam laroche just walked

you can blame my friend for that
I know the guy who does all of that at PNC Park. Pretty cool job, though, and all the free food and drinks he wants.

Can't fight this feeling
I think I hate Snell — quality start or no.
It’ll be nice to see him go to the bullpen after September 1 and see if Gorzo and/or Mr. Wonderful can pick up his slack.
and Luigi...

yahoo's boxscore is even more screwy than before
says there are just 6 batters in the Bucs’ lineup (no pitchers in the batting order, no Chavez, and only one LaRoche)
I do.

Chavez ...
is an excellent receiver. He makes receiving and handling pitchers look effortless,
On the other hand, Doumit looks like he wants to pick a fight with every ball that passes the batter.
