Mets vs. Pirates, 18 August 2008

New York Mets at Pittsburgh Pirates, Aug 18, 2008 12:35 PM EDT

Paul Maholm vs. John Maine, 12:35. I actually get to go to Pittsburgh for this one. Hopefully, I'll have a substantial update later today. Thanks for your patience. Things are crazy here, but this week looks a bit less crazy.

John Maine v. Paul Maholm

I’d love to watch, too bad it isn’t on FSN. Only significant lineup notes: Jose Reyes sits, Jason Michaels bats ahead of Andy LaRoche in the five hole, Brandon Moss isn’t starting due to his ankle.

Duke to pitch from the bullpen

According to Lanny, talked to john russel and neil Huntington

by Cence on Aug 18, 2008 12:50 PM EDT reply actions

He didnt say anything about going down to AAA which absolutely sucks,

He said Gorzo or Ross will get that time

by Cence on Aug 18, 2008 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I think both, right?

Snell, Karstens, Maholm, Davis, Gorzo, Ohlendorf, didn’t they talked about going to a six man rotation to reduce workload?

by DITO on Aug 18, 2008 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Can't see sending anyone to AAA,

without having to screw with the 25 man roster, especially since the Sept 1st roster expansion is coming up. The AAA season ends soon anyhow.

by ElliottBayBucco on Aug 18, 2008 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know if they are going to go to a 6 man rotation or not, but if they decide not to just remove davis and put him back in the bullpen. I know he only had two starts, but i like him a lot better in relief

by Cence on Aug 18, 2008 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

My guess

is that Romulo Sanchez will be sent down on Thursday if Duke is going to the bullpen, and Gorzo will get called up.

dang 2 men on with

Guess

that would mean Davis, Yates or Bautista. I don’t see Burnett, Grabow or Beam going anywhere.

Gawd, the pirates feel like they’re going thru motions right now aside from Maholm pitching.

Burnett is stepping it up

He’s only been scored on once in his last 10 appearances. His ERA has dropped every month.

He’s got a new out pitch — a slider — that’s nasty against LH batters.

That’s what August and September are for this year — to find out who’s ready to contribute in 2009 and who can be trade bait (Grabow?).

P.S. Burnett may get his first win today in what, 4 years?? (No jinx)

My guess is that Pearce’s hit was a bloop, since it went to left center Michaels didn’t score from second.

question

Hi! I’m new to enjoying baseball. I have a question about pitchers intentionally walking batters. I can understand why they would do this to a strong hitter, but why would they do it to a weaker hitter? Or am I misunderstanding what happened?

by ataraxite on Aug 18, 2008 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

The first one

was to get a runner on first to set up a double play.
The second one was walking a stronger hitter.

when I start watching is a groundout to Jack to end it. Didn’t get to see anything else, but hey, we won!

Grabow 2 BB in the 9th

This may tell you why JR went with Burnett with bases loaded in the 8th.

by WstCstBucco on Aug 18, 2008 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

Nope

It’s because JR is just as mindlessly regimented in his assignment of “roles” to his bullpen as most other managers are.
