Today's bizarro lineup
1. Luis Rivas 2B.
2. Jack Wilson SS.
3. Nate McLouth CF.
4. Ryan Doumit C.
5. Andy LaRoche 3B.
6. Steve Pearce RF.
7. Brendan Moss RF.
8. Chris Gomez 1B.
9. Maholm P
Gomez in because of a lefty on the mound.
.500 or bust...
Oops
messed it up again
Pearce is RF, Moss is LF. Argh.
I’ll refrain from doing the lineup ever again :P
.500 or bust...
That was great
They already love him, as they should

yeah man
good stuff…first AB walk, triples in the 12th and gets the winning run.
He’s going to have some “monster” numbers by the end of the year.

Hope we win this game
Zambrano pitching tomorrow vs Schizo I believe
Expect a low scoring game
Winds blowing notoriously IN
Euro-friendly game times at Wrigley.
Purely selfish, but I wish more teams would chose to play games in the afternoon. This is the first time this season I can catch a full weekend series without staying awake until stupid-o-clock.

According to Greg Brown
Maholm has the 2nd best ERA among NL lefties since May 31st
Now if Nutting can just sign a free agent ace next winter or trade for one.
Heck Pearce should bat 8th
once ADAM comes back
Rivas should be DFA'd
once Adam is off the DL next weekend.
Shortstop cover?
Freddy’s not healthy and Gomez has proved he can’t play SS anymore.

does everyone
hate pearce already? Boy, that poor guy sure had a short leash

Steve Pearce-
82 official ABs so far in the bigs, no HRs.
I guess keeping Xavier Nady around for the first half or so of this season was a good idea for the team`s future.
I hope Pearce hits-he obviously needs more time to prove whether he can or not-but I`m beginning to think that the guys in charge now understand his limitations a lot better than any of us do. He needed work on his defense in the minors to become a competent OF, and he hasn`t done anything this year to get excited about at AAA or so far in Pittsburgh.
we should know better than to judge
on 82 ABs
Jason
The Hanging Curve
I`m not passing judgment,
but what I am doing is saying that he needs to get his act together and start producing. He has his chance the next two months to prove that he can really play in the majors. He shouldn`t get any free passes from criticism.
Maholm struggled early last game too
was just fine after that.

still, our offense needs to step up…

doesn't surprise me
One time they had Frazier (1B coach) miked up and Doumit got on 1st. He asked “ok what are we doing here” (as in, like running on a grounder, halfway on a fly, etc) and Doumit goes “no idea”.

You know
This Chris Gomez at first base crap REALLY needs to stop.
Which Cutch?
Surely not the one that can’t hit AAA pitching.
by RDV across the sea on Aug 2, 2008 2:07 PM EDT reply actions
But why not
let Cutch work out his problems for a while in AAA instead of rushing him? That’s been part of our team’s problem for too long.
.500 or bust...
That's true.
And Pearce is at an age where he needs to be in MLB. Andrew Cutch is still very young for AAA.
by RDV across the sea on Aug 2, 2008 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions
I don`t think Andrew McCutchen
will make it to the majors til next year. He`s got a lot to work on, according to the reports, and his numbers are not good recently.
i think
you need an average of 3 plate appearances per team game played…don’t quote me on that though
by northsidenotch on Aug 2, 2008 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions
he should
be there by the end of the year, as long as he stays healthy

Plate appearances...
which include HBP and BB and such.
by Hitman Easler on Aug 2, 2008 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions
And right now
he’s about 70 plate appearances short of qualifying. So to qualify…he can’t miss very many games the rest of the season.
3.1 * 162 = 503 PAs
He’s got 286 right now so in the final 52+ games he needs to average 4.17 PAs per game…..with the loss of Bay and Nady plus some occasional appearances by Chavez that will not happen.
Check that
This Chris Gomez playing crap REALLY has to stop.
lets see a GIDP

Just wanted to say something...
Hey everyone – Sox fan here. Just wanted to let you guys know that I think everyone in Boston has fallen in love with Jason Bay. He was great in last night’s game – reached base four times in six ABs. Made a very nice sliding catch that saved a run. And then, with that triple he blasted in the 12th, scored the winning run (also scored the only other run in the second inning).
He is basically the complete opposite of Manny and everyone I know loves it. Good defense, smart base-runner, humble, and wants to play the game right. I’m really looking forward to seeing him play more.
Good luck with Hansen and Moss! I think Hansen will do well with a change of scenery and Moss looks like he’s going to be a good player – I was really sad to see him go.
He will strike out in some big situations,
but he will get his big hits, too. He doesn’t compain and he plays hard. Oh yeah, and he is a hell of a hitter.
hey thanks
We were all sad to see Bay go for the same reasons you mention. I for one was glad that he went to the Sox, a team I like, and a place where he will have a really good chance to win big, or at least get noticed by the pundits. When the trade was first made, all the ESPN, SI people said “Bay who? Why did they make this trade?”. They will soon see too.
Jason
The Hanging Curve
I'm going to miss Bay
but at the same time, Boston is a perfect fit for him. They’ll probably give him an extension and give him the money that he deserves and the money he wouldn’t have gotten from us. I think he will be there for a long time and now that he’s in a city that the national media cares about, I bet he is an All-Star Game starter for quite a few years now.
by northsidenotch on Aug 2, 2008 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions
And this may seem ridiculous
but with the way he takes pitches, he could be a good leadoff hitter if Ellsbury continues to struggle. Did Youklis lead off for a while during one of your WS years.
i think in 06
he leadoff a bunch…is that the past-tense? Pronounced “led-off”
Jason
The Hanging Curve
sorry but
seems ridiculous.
has good speed but K’s too much and don’t want that power leading off
Brian from Raise the Jolly Roger!
by Raise the Jolly Roger on Aug 2, 2008 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions
K's too much??
why does that matter? who cares how the lead off hitter gets out? Leadoff man with power doesn’t matter as much in the AL
good luck
You’ll love Bay. He’s no future HOF but is very very good, will get on base, hustle, and hit his HR’s. Very classy and never complains. You might get on him for struggling in the clutch but he comes through enough. Now I’ll be rooting for Boston over the Yankees for sure

My MLB extra innings won't let me watch it
for some reason Direct TV thinks that it is good to not let people watch saturday afternoon games
I think the pirates need to start stealing more to try and get in position
with people like Nate not Doumit….
Pirates are last in the league in attempted steals
Sorry for the delayed response!
I have a feeling that Tito will keep him near the middle of the lineup. He likes the faster guys on top. Oh and I can’t remember if Youk has ever led off, but I know for a fact he hates it. The one spot he doesn’t like to hit.
I know that Bay won’t always come up with the huge clutch hits. But I feel like his defensive contributions and good baserunning will make up for that.
there might be rumblings about the defense
sometimes it seems like he doesnt go all out on plays that he should. but he makes up for that by playing every day and not making really stupid plays (diving when theres no chance and giving up a triple as a result)

Comeback Kids?
I can’t see the Bucs overcoming early defecits anymore. If they do, it’s a real testament to JR’s ‘play hard’ mentality.
by RDV across the sea on Aug 2, 2008 2:50 PM EDT reply actions
why not?
just ‘cause no Nady and Bay?

Yeah.
Best two hitters in the line-up. Like I said, if they do, it’s all about the manager’s attitude.
by RDV across the sea on Aug 2, 2008 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I think he is a step up from Manny in more ways than one
Manny just angers me. it seems like he is more into showing off than playing the game.
Manny is manny…so dumb
Moss should be batting leadoff
instead of 0for3vas and Sanchez or at least bat 2nd
Really the lineup should be
2b Sanchez
LF Moss
CF McLouth
C Doumit
1b Adam
3b Andy
rf Pearce
ss Wilson
it's only
2.1 innings, but still looks good
