Think about this
In 2010 assuming that McCutcheon and Tabata are both up we could have 3 outfielders who could hit 20 homers with 20 steals, who hit .275-.315, in Tabata, Mclouth, and McCtcheon. I think that will be one of the better outfields in the NL then. What does everyone think about that outfield. Maybe if John Russel would let runners steall more often they could each have 30. Don't forget they all also have pretty good eyes at the plate so they will walk a lot to and have high OBP.

Hopefully
John Russell will have worn out his welcome by then and we will have a different manager deciding if they get the green light to run or not.
If he is still here I wonder which of the three he will have batting 9th?

Hate for Russell?
Didn’t know there was much of that floating around…

Steals?
I don’t think the number of steals by itself is important. Sure, it would be nice if they all had something resembling McLouth’s 2007 on the basepaths, but I’m much more concerned with them getting on base in the first place. The raw number of stolen bases doesn’t really matter much on its own anyway, unless we’re talking fantasy here. Also, Tabata playing much in the majors in 2010 seems a bit optimistic to me. Maybe a Sept. callup in 2010?
Not to be negative or anything, but none of those three players will be a superstar in 2010, which I think you need at least one of the better outfields. Defensively though, they could be pretty good. But I dunno, is Tabata a good defender?

I don't think any Pirate ever has hit
20 homers and.275 at age 21, which Tabata will be in 2010. Love to see it happen though.
I agree strongly with wickethewok on the steals. If those guys can put up similar numbers to what McLouth has the past couple of years fine but I doubt that he could retain the excellent ratio of SBs to CS if he tried to steal more. Cutch has just 30 steals with 19 CS overall in AAA. You need to be sucessful about twice as often as you are caught stealing to break even in expected runs scored so he actually hurts his team relative to just staying put once he get on. That could change of course but I think it is unlikely to be an important factor in his value to the Pirates during hi career.

I would love to blame Russell for our problems...
But there simply isn’t enough talent on this team by which we can judge a manager’s performance. Just look at the combination of “stiffs” he played tonight when Gorzo pitched and understand that there was nothing Russell could have done to win this game. I will go so far as to say he has done nothing to impress me with his skills but this is a “throw-away” year and so I will reserve judgement until he has some talent with which to work. When management gives him players like Chavez, Minky, and Rivas that he must play, and then combine them with rookies like Morgan, LaRoche and Moss and Neil should pay people to come and watch them play instead of vice-versa. I realize we are rebuilding but this might be one of the worse teams ever to play the game…and that includes the 1962 Mets. We’re so bad I could cry….

2008 Mariners
Don’t the 2008 Mariners have to be in on this discussion? They have 3 decent players this year in Ibanez, Ichiro, and a Felix Hernandez (who has been great actually). Everyone else has been injured or terrible. They have players putting up replacement-level SS offensive numbers at 1B and DH. Even after trading Bay and Nady, the Pirates still have a better offense than the Mariners.

Reserves
Without paying some bench players as much as our starters how could management have done much better in stocking the bench? We cannot be like some teams and allow talented young players to sit and play maybe twice a week and stunt their growth.
