Psychology & Rebuilding
Why are we so worried about how Pearce will feel if he continues to slump? Granted, he did move up through the ranks quickly, but slumps are part of the game. How better to learn the MLB than playing at the MLB. Let him learn how to deal with slumps and the psychology of the game from JR and vets like Minky. Pearce can see success in Winter Ball and the Fall League.
Morgan to me is an Abraham Nunez type with better speed - decent bench guy/pinch runner type. What bothers me is that he is getting PT over Pearce and McCuthen. I guess if we acquired a Pearce or McCuthen then we would let them play......
Seriously, the Pirates should be paying us to attend the games. This team is ridiculous right now. I know we are headed in a "different direction", but this is the third rebuilding process and I have lost patience. Of course we have better talent at the minor league level than in the past, but dont forget we were voted the best minor league system in 1997 and all that yielded us was 10 more years of losing and two more GMs. At the end of the day, all of the guys are just prospects. You cant count guys like Doumit and McClouth as guys to build around. They have both done it just one year. We sign Ian Snell as the "ace of the staff" after a good half last year, and look what he has turned into. There is no guarantee that McCutchen, Pearce or for that matter Tabata and Alverez will ever turn into anything. There is nothing but pure upside for them right now. Yes we have different scouts, but this organization has produced nothing but one bona fide all star in the past 16 years (Ramirez).
I am not normally negative, but I am more skeptical and less benefit of the doubt right now after enduring so many losing seasons. I know that Andy and Brandon have to take their lumps in the MLB, but at the end of the day, they are just prospects. As far as what the Pirates could do differently.......they are doing it now. What the impact will be remains to be seen. There is no way any of the prospects we got in return will all pan out, but there could be some sleepers in the minors (ala McClouth). My major question is that if a few hiccups happen along the way, will Nutting pull the money? He is in the media industry (primarily small town newspapers) which is not exactly booming. He can pull outside revenue away from the Pirates and turn a tiny profit with revenue sharing and PNC park without putting a winner on the field. What is the turn around time on our draft and infrastructure investments?
On a side note - I cannot stand the sideshow PNC Park has become. I worked for the Delmarva Shorebirds (SAL league) in 1999 and PNC Park has turned into a minor league baseball sideshow between innings. How long until we hold a fan blackout, shave your head, save Brittney's baby contest at PNC? If I want to go to Kennywood, I will drive to West Mifflin.
Sorry for the rant, this board is theraputic.

What would you......
differently? You start by suggesting Pearce should play now and take his lumps. But then move on to say the team is ridiculous, but you know Moss and LaRoche have to take their lumps.
I’m not disagreeing with your assesment, but so many people come on here and rip the team and organization and the only solution I ever see is “go sign C.C. Sabathia and trade for a top end starter like Harden and a bat like Adam Dunn.” Okay, so that isn’t going to happen. What would you do that hasn’t been done over the last six months other than get more guys to compete for starting rotation spots at this beginning of this season—which clearly has been addressed for next year, with nine or ten guys in the mix? (Snell, Gorzo, Maholm, Ohlendorf, McCutcheon, Dumatrait, Barthmeier, Karstens, Duke, etc.)
I’m tired of listening to guys rant—we all agree the team has sucked and does suck at the moment—without adding anything of interest (and I’m not suggesting you did this, it is just my own personal rant.)
To add....
I think people agree with your comment about Pearce and I all think we assume he is going to be back Sept. 1 when rosters expand. Morgan was kept up for these ten days because McLouth was sick and we need a backup center fielder. I’m guessing Pearce gets 70-100 more at bats in September. Tens days down is not going to be a big deal. If he doesn’t play in September then I am clearly wrong and will be quite surprised.
As for Andrew McC. The clock starts on him the day he comes up. Currently he isn’t on the 40 man roster. The Bucs face three alternatives: 1.) they can call him up now and give him 50-80 at bats in September, let him get accustomed to things and have him compete for a spot in spring training. Clock starts. 2.) Have him win a job in on the roster in the spring and start the clock then. 3.) Have him compete in spring training but keep him down in the minors until May (deservedly or not) or so in order to manage his service time, control his salary and potentially keep him with the organization for an extra year. This is exactly what the Tampa Rays did with ROY candidate Evan Longoria this year. This clearly is the move I would most favor and I imagine it would be the most unpopular because it is hard to educate the fan base behind the rationale in my opinion. However, I’m willing to be convinced otherwise. But, these far thinking decisions can really help a franchise.
I agree completely
with regard to your suggested handling of McCutchen. I believe if he is not called up in September and stays in the minors for around 7 weeks at the beginning of next season, he will not be eligible for free agency until after the 2115 season. It is a silly system that gives teams the incentive to keep players who are ready for the majors on the farm but it is what it is.
My rant went off track but here's my point
I understand that Nutting had been buying majority shares since McClatchy bought the team. He was front and center in 2003, but had one less vote than McClatchy since McClatchy had “managing general partner” status. Anyway, my point was that Nutting isnt exactly loaded and from his comments isnt “taking any money out of the team”. If he isnt taking money out of the team, where is the $6 million he spent on the draft coming from as well as the Dominicon facility being built (not to mention the Bradenton facility upgrades). My point is that we are walking a fine line between spending and productivity. If there is any hiccup or prospects not panning out, will Nutting have the capital to keep going? I believe since he has been involved (and been the face of ownership) he has made good hiring decisions. The product on the field is horendous and the park is a side show, but for the first time we at least have some promise. It is just hard to trust an organization with such a bad track record of developing players while having an owner that all of a sudden is throwing money in the right places.
Sorry to be a skeptic, but it is either too good to be true or they are just throwing us true fans a bone while they go back to being the Clippers…..
Rebuilding from ground up
It would take one much less time to refurbish one’s house than to build it from scratch. So it is with the Bucs. There was no foundation and only now is one beginning to be laid. This was a teardown and it is now being rebuilt , hopefully with an architectural plan (a la hard-throwing pitchers, a few hustling veterans aka Minky, and so on). But with little money and management’s first draft, it will take time and in the short term the Bucs must pick up cheap players that have the mold but not the form (Gates, Meek, Hansen, etc). The balancing act is that Management still must try to fill a few seats and will try to do that by entertaining fans with players like Morgan and Minky and pitchers that can throw 96 mph fastballs, even if they can’t win. All they need is Big Country back to hit some towering homeruns or maybe a Romak!!!! I believe Pearce’s time will come at 1st base next year or maybe even sooner if LaRoche can be traded and McC will be playing CF by mid next year, as has been commented on. And while I am looking at my crystal ball, I think a new manager from our minor leagues will replace Mr. Russell some time next year, which will be worth 5-10 wins. Patience, this is a 3-5 year process – you gotta have faith and besides there is no way to go but up.
Russell not going anywhere
He was hand-picked by NH and will be given a fair shake to run this team. From everything reported, it sounds like JR and NH talk regularly about all decisions… that’s not the sound of a man on a short leash. NH knows he’s dealt Russell a crappy hand and I’m sure does not blame him for the current state of the team. Russell still has them playing hard (terribly, but hard), and that counts for something. We all witnessed the team quit on Tracy, and that’s not happening here.
Love him or hate him, Russell will be the skipper for the next 3-5 years.
You said two interesting things
Do you really forsee us trading Adam LaRoche? I do not care for someone who has proven to only play for 4 months a season while going through the motions in April and May. What realistic return could we expect? I dont think we could do any better than 5/6 prospect, “mold and no form”, or a bench player. Would a position switch again benefit Pearce? Would he then be a Nady type (first/right field) should we trot out Moss/McClouth/McCutchen? Would that be in the plan and would his glove be good enough for both?
IMHO, I think that JR has been good for the Bucs. While he has the personality of a lab rat, he keeps them hustling (more so than Tracy/McClendon). I think 3 years is realistic (keep them hustling while building) then bring in a proven winner to put them over the top.
JR:
“Love him or hate him, Russell will be the skipper for the next 3-5 years.”
I doubt it. One more season, perhaps two.
JR
3 tops (this year + 2). We will have to pony up a few bucks for our next skipper who is a proven MLB winner. No one would want to coach the AAA.5 team we will be trotting out there next year.
LaRoche to LA
I seriously think that Colleti of the Dodgers would take one of the hotest power hitters in the majors and maybe say a decent shortstop to get them to the playoffs. I also believe he is crazy and desperate enough to give up something of value, such as a Loney and a prospect in return. A Loney return makes Pearce a 4th outfielder/backup 1st baseman. The 3 M’s in the outfield (make it 4 with Morgan) works for me and Pearce’s natural position was at first.
As for the manager change, I predict that Brad Fischer, who took over as skipper of the New York-Penn League State College club. Why would the Pirates choose Fischer – Because he has spent the last 29 years coaching at both the Major League and Minor League levels for Oakland. He da man.
Dodgers
It was a small miracle they traded LaRoche. They inexplicably refuse to play their young players, but also refuse to trade them. No way they move Loney, Ethier, Kemp, etc.
In ways that organization is more dysfunctional than the PBC. But boy, they can scout and sign talent…
