A 12:35 start,

and Zach Duke on the mound! Man, I think I`m gonna stay up til the wee hours over here and watch the game.

DITO

I guess I`ll just be watching Internet updates then. It`s pretty easy to watch Duke`s hits allowed go up and up….

Another reason to hate Chicago

stupid day games (except for letting those of you abroad enjoy the games, then it’s okay :P)

Welp...

I know, I know

they’re in P-burgh…. I’m just salty because I am at work, but they blocked my mlb.tv access.

Welp...

I'll take that kind of inning

Soriano can hit all day if we keep him on the basepaths

by poorboywilly on Aug 27, 2008 12:44 PM EDT reply actions

for as good as he hits

Soriano is terrible in the field…how much stuff he has messed up just prancing around is unreal

by poorboywilly on Aug 27, 2008 12:47 PM EDT reply actions

efficient

mostly groundballs with a routine fly ball and one hit

Looks good so far Duke, keep it up

by poorboywilly on Aug 27, 2008 12:57 PM EDT reply actions

like I said

keep him on base I don’t care if he hits

Holly Moly

It’s the third inning and the Cubs haven’t scored!

Progress

Maybe it is time to anoint Duke

as our staff ace instead of calling for his head as a lot of us have been doing.

Alverez

Just heard that he will not report to Pittsburgh until the Pirates renegotiate his deal he wants more than 6 mil

by Cence on Aug 27, 2008 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

Not quite what I'm reading

But the MLBPA is filing a grievance claiming that Alvarez agreed after the midnight deadline.

What utter bullshit.

by shayborg on Aug 27, 2008 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Listening to the game on the Radio that is what lanny just said, but I am seeing the grievance online as well, not good news for the pirates

by Cence on Aug 27, 2008 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Well if he agreed after midnite

So must have hosmer of KC royals pick..who’s deal was submitted after alvarez’s.

I hope they just lock the kid out without a year’s pay if he chooses to do this. and keep his rights.

by lfhlaw on Aug 27, 2008 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmmm

Re: Pedro…

If he agreed to the contract will that eliminate his ability to go back to college?

by DITO on Aug 27, 2008 1:50 PM EDT reply actions

yes, he cannot go back to college and he is on the restricted list there is an update on the PBC blog about all of this

by Cence on Aug 27, 2008 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, DK is on top of things as always

The PBC blog has a ton of information about the whole mess.

by shayborg on Aug 27, 2008 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

According to the official statement from the Pirates

on the PG, it doesn`t sound like the Boras camp has much to go on here. If he gave his verbal agreement to the contract and it was submitted on time-which MLB seems to concur with-I think Alvarez is making a huge mistake listening to Boras.

If Alvarez doesn`t want to play with the Pirates, let`s go with the #3 overall pick in next year`s draft and our “earned” top #5? pick, and the two we get in the 2nd round.

Pedro Alvarez will never be anything other than a bad attitude, a player with a chip on his shoulder for the PBC. Forget about him and move on.

by patthatt on Aug 27, 2008 2:00 PM EDT reply actions

I don't necessarily believe that last part

There have been lots of players who listened to bad advice from agents during contract negotiations but were model citizens after everything was sorted out.

by shayborg on Aug 27, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope you`re right, shayborg,

if this mess is ever sorted out and Alvarez plays for the Bucs, but I have bad feeling that this is just the start of a big, big problem.

by patthatt on Aug 27, 2008 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

The only problem could be

The union did not agree to the timing of the deal?

by Cence on Aug 27, 2008 2:04 PM EDT reply actions

Cence

According to the Pirates statement, the timing (midnight deadline) cannot be something that Boras will be able to dispute, because the Pirates are saying that the final O.K. on Hosmer`s deal with the Royals was technically submitted after they sent theirs in on Alvarez. (If I`m reading it wrong, somebody correct me, but I`ll go over it again to make sure.)

by patthatt on Aug 27, 2008 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that this is the way to go, but I am just curious...

Could the Bucs keep Pedro Alvarez out of professional baseball for six years if Pedro just refuses to every play for them?

by DITO on Aug 27, 2008 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

That's what the "restricted list" is, IIRC

No other team can negotiate with him as long as the Pirates have his rights in MLB’s eyes, which they do for the next several years.

by shayborg on Aug 27, 2008 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

its actually longer than 6 years

its six years after he has played a year in the majors

by Cence on Aug 27, 2008 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

This is unbelievable to me

The comments that are being read of the radio from Coonley…Pedro refusing to report…has anything like this happend before??

by DITO on Aug 27, 2008 2:10 PM EDT reply actions

Boras hates the Aug. 15 midnight deadline-

and has said so repeatedly.

I think he is using Pedro Alvarez to make a stand against this system.

by patthatt on Aug 27, 2008 2:11 PM EDT reply actions

Meanwhile,

Zach Duke has put up six scoreless frames.

by patthatt on Aug 27, 2008 2:13 PM EDT reply actions

I feel bad ignoring Duke's performace

but Lanny, Steve and I couldn’t care less.

by DITO on Aug 27, 2008 2:14 PM EDT reply actions

Seriously

I guess it’s nice that a 24-year-old pitcher on our team is looking pretty good, but as far as I’m concerned this might as well be a minor league game.

by shayborg on Aug 27, 2008 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

And he walks his first two of the game with two out in the eighth

He’s not used to pitching this long. Get him out of there…

by shayborg on Aug 27, 2008 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Patience...

8 innings, only 2 runs. Good job for a change, Zach. Please give us another quality start next time out.

by patthatt on Aug 27, 2008 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe that work on is arm angle,

or whatever it was, was actually beneficial for one start. We`ll see next time, though.

by patthatt on Aug 27, 2008 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Morgan is awful

None out, man on first, and he pops a drag bunt up to the third baseman. He is bad at baseball.

by shayborg on Aug 27, 2008 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

Morgan is awful,

Morgan is terrible,

Morgan flat-out sucks.

But we`ll be stuck with him in the Pirates` lineup over and over again til the end of the season.

by patthatt on Aug 27, 2008 2:42 PM EDT reply actions

Duke has looked good today

I had to look it up to make sure I wasn’t remembering it wrong, but when he first came up a few years ago he absolutely feasted on the Cubs. In his first 4 starts against the Cubs he was 4-0 with an ERA 0.56. Actually in his career going into today he is 4-4 with a 3.16 ERA.

Quite frankly he’s a guy that I enjoy watching pitch when I get the chance.

The Problem has been consistency.

When he’s on, he’s on. But when he’s not, he’s awful and gives up a lot of hits.
But I’d prefer consistent quality starts.

Snell has been jekyll and hyde, not sure who our starting 5 will be come next year aside from Paul Maholm for sure. But it is sure nice to have more than 5 options….but whether they are any good…is the question.

Maholm and then the rest(forgive the spelling)
Snell, Gorzelanny, Karstens, Ohlendorf, Duke, Davis, maybe Herrara? hopefully some inexpensive off-season signings. Someone who can chew up innings.

by lfhlaw on Aug 27, 2008 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

There are more than a few guys in that last that have shown flashes but have been inconsistent

what do you think is the reason for that? Also, do you think of any of those guys have the ability to step up and be a stud for you guys?

mjk83

You know he`s made several dozen awful starts against other teams the past 3 years, right?

2005 is a long time ago. I hope Zach Duke can turn a corner with this start, but we`ll see in a few days.

by patthatt on Aug 27, 2008 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

unfortunately

I know all too well as I definitely had him on my fantasy team in 06. More than anything else I was just testing my memory.

---AC 00 00 00 - Believe

by mjk83 on Aug 27, 2008 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

to further that

in his 94 career starts he has 46 “quality” starts (I don’t think 6 innings of 3 run ball is quality but that’s another issue)

by mjk83 on Aug 27, 2008 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Nothing good

out of this one other than Duke`s pitching.
