Glad to see
JR has both Pearce and Moss in the lineup. He needs to do this pretty much every day. PBC knows what Micheals and Minky can do as OFs. They need to get a better picture of where Pearce and Moss are so that they can figure out where they are going to be in 2009.
And September 1 they can shut down Maholm and give his starts to McCutchen or Olendorf (“Mr. Wonderful”). Or start them both and sit down Snell—but put him in the pen and save his last option for 2009. And Gorzo can come back up for Duke or Herrera.
Gah...

Gorzo update
thru 3 innings, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K. 35 pitches, 21 strikes.
my god
he can throw strikes
Jason
The Hanging Curve
Gorzo has slowly been showing signs of improvement
I’m glad they’ve been going about this the correct way… it’s more like a rehab assignment than a punishment, which is exactly what he needed.
.500 or bust...
Unfortunately the mojo of Michael Felix
may be underground somewhere.
So far, for Hickory…1.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 5 WP.
who?

Think about Duke last year or Gorzo the first part of this year.
and move it to class A.
Last year at Hickory and State College…
61.1 IP, 69 H, 68 R, 50 ER, 69 BB, 68 K.
He’s a little better this year at Hickory…
74.1 IP, 56 H, 39 R, 33 ER, 51 BB, 52 K.
So, for those math challenged…
135.2 IP, 125 H, 107 R, 83 ER, 120 BB, 120 K. ERA of 5.51, WHIP of 1.81
And that was before tonight
with 1.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 5 WP. Which didn’t improve any of his numbers.
Egad
You mean the PBC may have wasted a 2nd round pick? That’s unheard of.
In 2006, the team got Lincoln, Shelby Ford and Negrych (didn’t he build the Prime Sentinels?). So the number 2 pick has crashed and burned. For DL, it’s still a high water mark draft.
Gorzo now thru 6 innings
5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. 77 pitches, 47 strikes.
Actually, I see
the run was unearned, although Gorzo was the one that made the error on a pickoff attempt.
Gorzo now done
6+ IP, 6 H, 1 R (so far), 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 85 pitches, 52 strikes. A hit and an error by Walker to start the 7th before he got pulled.
Good news…Walker is a home run shy of the cycle through 7 innings with a bases loaded triple.
Bad news…JVB relieved Gorzo.
McCutchen
continues to slump although he does have two walks.

Lots of odd things going on in our minor league system tonight...
Altoona 1 hit through 5 innings, Negrych of course.
Patrick Bresnehan almost pulled a Felix for the Curve in relief. Not sure how he did this. 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 K.
holy crap...
how do you manage that?
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!

In the 5th, come in with 1 out
ground out, walk, walk, ground out
in the 6th, walk, strikeout, walk, walk, single, cold shower. And a reliever that gets the last 2 outs.

Prediction
Pearce gets his 1st home run Wednesday off Randy Johnson, Jack gets drilled with the next pitch, and Minky leads the charge out of the dugout.
Minky probably

Finally...
This team is fun to watch in the sense of there is some hope and a plan in place. Even the AB where LaRoche struck out was good to watch because he showed some discipline, and was just ahead of a pitch that could have been tagged down the line. He got fooled on a good splitter, which will happen.
Moss also shows very good discpline at the plate. Very nice to see.
Herrera is going to destroy this good start. But he’s not part of ‘the plan’ and it’s all about ‘the plan.’
Whew

Not for nothing, but if that’s the best a first place NL West team can do against what is essentially a pitching machine, then I see why the NL West is so bad.

.500 or bust...
Hope Yoslan
plans on throwing shutout ball the rest of the way. I have a feeling that we had one shot at Haren.
Don't get mad....
at Herrera. He really has no business being in the majors. Blame Littlefield for putting the Bucs in the situation where a guy like this has to be on the major league roster. This is actually sad watching a guy who can’t pitch in the big leagues actually try.
His personal story is amazing
It’s just a shame that instead of El Duque, DL gave a big contract to El Dooky.
Fair point - after years of
having high draft picks, it shocks the conscience that we have to rebuild a thin farm system. Having the same scouts and minor league coaches, however, is not confidence inspiring
With the
subtraction of JBay & X & Marte, how old is our team on average now?
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. -- HST
It will be younger after the game tonight
because Herrera may have thrown his last pitch in the majors for the Pirates.
Gracias.

On the fringes of the wild card race which would have delayed the rebuilding effort – thus reducing the take we could have received from guys like Nady and Bay. Blessing in disguise…
Geez
Haren has only given up more than 3 ER in 3 out of 22 starts this year. Never in last 2 months.
Yoslan Herrera sucks:
5 games, 18 1/3 innings, 35 hits allowed, 12 BB, only 10 K, opponents batting well over .400 and a 9.82 ERA.
A complete waste of $1.3 million over 3 years. He`s gunning for a demotion to AA. Use him next season as JVBullington at Indy and then get him the hell out of the organization.

Try to get some kind of return on investment
Once he’s back in Altoona, try to teach him the knuckleball. Or the eephus. Or send Teke to teach him to throw sidearm. Try anything.
Haren bore down a little bit there
after the Eye Chart HR. 2 Ks and a ground out.
But 55 pitches in 3 IP.
On Pirates fans in Arizona
Wehner: “you see them everywhere you go. Bucco Nation”
Greg Brown: “I call it Bucco World”
now the whole thing in itself is ridiculous (i think) but Bucco Nation sounds a heck of a lot better than Bucco World

Not just the city - it's the whole
steel/coal-mining area. I’m part of the exodus, but my son has been raised as a Bucco fan. Of course that was made easier by living in six different places in 15 years
I think....
...we will sign him. Both sides have a lot to lose, but Alvarez actually has more to lose. He’s the number two pick in the draft. How much better can he be in next year’s draft? Fans are just going to have to be patient. This will likely go down to the last day. Everything in the media will sound negative because it’s designed for the other side to hear, not to update us. Alvarez will sign…he won’t be cheap, but he will get signed.
It`s going to be really interesting
the next week with the negotiations. I commend the Pirates for sticking to an amount-whatever it is-and not just going crazy and giving him whatever he wants. My guess is that Alvarez will sign in the end because he wants the millions and doesn`t want to go back to Vanderbilt.

Did we trade hitters
or our bullpen? Looks like our bullpen left town about a week ago.
We had a bullpen that recently?
I assumed it’d been like months.

I have to be at work early tomorrow, so now that I’m leaving, we’ll probably come back to win!
Later, all…
.500 or bust...
Right behind you
...in an “I’ve gotta work early” way.

Unfortunately...
I have to work in the morning…so I guess that I will have to miss the comeback in the 9th.

one bit
of comedy for the night:
when chi/hou went to the second delay, ESPN switched to the FSN arizona feed, right before reynolds’ third RBI…
mark grace, and i quote:
great opportunity here for chris reynolds to…chris snyder. chris young, MARK reynolds. damn.
also
at least we didnt do like the twins and turn a 6-1 lead against the frickin mariners turn into a 11-6 deficit in one inning
