I don't expect a LaRoche roster move
until Friday, if one is needed. Usual suspects are playing for Indy tonight. I can’t see the Pirates trying to fly someone from Buffalo to Phoenix for a noon local start tomorrow. Better just to meet the team in Philly on Friday.
good point.

Just saw an update from DK's blog
LaRoche out 2-3 days at least…should start swinging on Friday. Big brother’s swinging session pushed from tomorrow to Friday. Davis going in Herrera’s start…I guess he’s the starter Saturday. Yates not available tonight, flying back to Pittsburgh on a family related matter.
For those not looking at the link round up
at Bradenton today…
Capps 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Runner reached on error, stole second, advanced to 3rd on a PB by…..you got it…Joggin Ronny Paulino.
Paulino finally caught 9 innings today and went 1 for 4.
Jose Tabata played RF, 2 HR in 4 AB with 5 RBI. Guess the wrist is OK.
Good news on Tabata
But he is a AA player rehabbing in the Rookie League. I’m happier that this means his hamstring isn’t as serious as some were saying last week.
I don’t know what Paulino’s excuse is, though. (But I haven’t known for 1 1/2 years what his excuse is.)
P.S. Anyone notice that Evan Meek is the player of the month for July at Indianapolis? He posted an 0.51 ERA in 17.2 IP, 16K and 1BB.
Paulino's excuse
“Hey, I play on a crap team, so there’s no reason I should have to hustle, or do anything other than the minimum, because I’m not really good enough to get traded to a good team where I might be anything other than a backup.”
Wrong!

Pearce on the bench.
Is this going to happen every other day?
Play 1 game, sit the next.
How do they plan on evaluating him if they play him like this?
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!
Playing For Pride. Pirates, Utes, Panthers, and more...
Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".
The saddest play in penny ante 5 card draw poker . . .
. . . is to keep one card and draw 4 new ones.
That’s how I feel about the PBC starting rotation.
Keep Maholm, and discard Duke, Snell, Herrera & JVB. (Duke & Snell can stay in the bullpen.)
Draw Karsten, Davis, Ohlendorf and McCutchen.
And after Sept. 1, replace one of the new starting 5 with Gorzo. (He went 6 IP for 0 ER, 0 BB and 4K last night, but JVB picked up the BS/L.)
So far, 2 down, 2 to go.
Morris pitched five innings and left the game. His successor immediately gave up 3 runs. The Crawdads have managed a run, but not a hit..

A favor please?
Can we all agree to use “Bryan Morris”—at least for a while? I saw this post and had a nightmare flashback to Matt Morris. It wasn’t pleasant.
they finally got a hit
with 2 outs in the 8th. Of course, they are still down 9-1.
Oh, fer

What the hell
is going on in AAA.. Indy and Buffalo both into their RP’s..and it’s the 2nd inning of a 0-0 game
Yep
They were in a rain delay for a while. Not sure how long, though.
Pittsburgh Lumber Co.
http://mvn.com/mlb-pirates
two hours
sounds about right. Barthmaier started…but didn’t throw but about 13 pitches before the rain. Candidate for long relief the next couple of days I guess. BTW…first batter after their rain delay, Michel Hernandez hits a granny. Indy up 4-0. Meek now pitching.
Well,
THAT didn’t take long, did it?
Webb = 24 pitches thru 3 IP

I knew it was waaaaay too early
to say anything about Duke’s performance so far… CY is a Bucco-killer ths series.
.500 or bust...
What percentage
of the bajakazillion runs we’ve given up have come with 2 out?

Um...
a bajakazillion percent?

Joba Chamberlain
I read that he’s going to see Dr. James Andrews. Who knows if anything is wrong, but has anything every been a-OK after a visit with Dr. Andrews?
Just goes to show, there is no such thing as a pitching prospect. You wait and wait and wait, and it can still all go bad at the drop of a hat.
Jamie Moyer of the Phils
is about to not win his first game ever (in 10 starts) against the Marlins… I can’t remember if it will be a ND or a Loss, though… but he was 10 for 10 with wins until tonight.
.500 or bust...
Mark Grace is proving....
...to be an idoit! “I don’t know what the goals are of the Pittsburgh Pirates. If thier goal is to finish last place in the NL Central every year, then year in and year out they are hitting their goals.”
My
man-crush on Doumit and his .341 avg keeps on keeping on…
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. -- HST
Listen to the rest of what he said though
He says the Pirates fans deserve MUCH BETTER than what ownership has given them over the last 15 years. He isn’t blaming the fans or the city…but team management.
Unfortunately
he capped it off by implying that we shouldn’t have traded Bay, Nady and Marte
.500 or bust...
I don't think Gracie
realizes how bad our farm system is. Or our pitching staff. Those trades pretty much had to be made to attempt to improve our team in the long term.
Just another reason...
.....I think we have some of the best broadcast guys in the biz. They seem to really do their home work on the opposition. They don’t try to “fake it” if they don’t know.
Yeah...they just don't speak the truth on
our own system.
Frankly
I think Mark Grace has a better grip on the Pirates long term issues than most of the Pirates announcers do. And a better pulse on what the Pirates fans are capable of.
what the Pirates fans are capable of.
Open revolt, or blind acceptance?

There is a fine line
though, between what you want to talk about and what you’re “allowed” to talk about, especially if you want to keep your job. Since these guys are not the hometown guys, they have more latitude to say what they want.
.500 or bust...
I guess that where I feel Grace is refreshing
is that listening to other teams announcers during our games…is that he is one of the few…if not the only opposing announcer that seems to have some sort of clue what is going on with the Pirates over the past 15 years. Granted…he didn’t like the trades this year…but he likely hasn’t looked at the ENTIRE system close enough to see the trades were needed.
Webb
not even breaking a sweat.
54 pitches thru 5.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. -- HST
D-backs bullpen won't be an issue tonight
because…unless things change…we aren’t going to see it.
How did Jack
get to that ball before Freddy? It was 10 feet to the first base side of 2nd.
yeah he's about keeping up with webb
we just need to give him some runs….hear that Doumit, Moss, Nate Sr.?

79 pitches
thru 6, 5 K’s, NO walks, 3 hits…
Yeah, I’d say so!

Pretty well
is understating things. I think it’s his best start in a long time. The HR by Young was a great piece of hitting…considering the location of the pitch. It definitely wasn’t a mistake by Duke. The only mistake he’s made was hanging the changeup to Drew right before Young’s home run. No walks and only 3 hits.
Every once in a while
you have to give the batter some credit. Young’s HR was one of those times.
So...
did we ever decide on a nickname for Moss?

is really playing our lefties to pull, it seems like there is no room over there between him and Clark

the night we get pitching, = no hitting.

Even most of our base hits have been
rollers up the middle.
Eric Byrnes bobblehead night
I like it how they are giving away bobbleheads for someone batting .209 with 6 homers and been on the DL for over a month.
Aren't the Bucs
due to do a Polcovich bobblehead?

it's the mirror image of
what a 2 run lead looks like for us when one of our starters has a typical game
.500 or bust...
Short of Jack
hitting a 2 run jack…Duke is done for the night…will get PH for this inning. 93 pitches in 7 innings…we need more starts like this from him.
i think
if there’s 2 outs and no one on, duke bats

20 ground ball outs
including 4 DP’s in 8 innings…on 90 pitches. If you’d have said before the game that Webb would have 2 strikeouts, I would have said we’d be winning. Gotta tip the cap to the man.
