And this is a surprise how?

He’s started against 4 right handers in the last 30 days. And 2 of those were Pedro Martinez and Roy Oswalt (pretty tough for ANYONE to hit). The other 2 were Josh Fogg and Braden Looper. Sorta tough to get anything going like that.

I don't make the news,

I just report it. :-)

Tied at 1

Doumit just misses a 3-1 fastball and pops it up to fairly shallow center, but Morgan scores anyway.

What's with

alla the sliders?

oh,

it apparently doesn’t matter. They’re smacking the fastballs, too.

Just a ton of bad luck here

Not one of these was really hard hit except maybe for Schumaker’s single.

No runs!

Guys, did Steve Blass just retire or what? I just looked up and he was speechifying.

by EmmaOMG on Sep 13, 2008 8:57 PM EDT reply actions

Was wondering about that...

MLB.TV cut out after Greg said that Steve had an announcement…

by shayborg on Sep 13, 2008 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope, he's not retiring.

According to Greg Brown it was just a thank-you to the supporting staff.

Don't know why you send Luigi up to bunt there.

I realize he hasn’t been hitting, but he’s not used to bunting, and Springer just issued a 4-pitch walk…

by shayborg on Sep 13, 2008 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

GAH

Cruz, that was ball 4…

by shayborg on Sep 13, 2008 9:07 PM EDT reply actions

All three of those strikes were bullshit, the last one the worst of them all.

by matskralc on Sep 13, 2008 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

Totally agree

On replay, the 3-2 pitch was a good six inches outside.

by shayborg on Sep 13, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Holy crap

After going to 3-0, Michaels strikes out looking on three fastballs, each of them a few inches outside. Awful umpiring right there — Michaels started walking after the 3-0 pitch that was low and outside, so the ump called it and the next 2 strikes just because he thought Michaels was showing him up. Jesus.

by shayborg on Sep 13, 2008 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

Yep

That kind of crap from umpires is why I don’t particularly mind instant replay.

by matskralc on Sep 13, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

JR, that is, not Morgan. This time.

by matskralc on Sep 13, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Wasted outs. :(

The team just needs to follow the Moneyball idea.
Nothing too lose, really.

Incidentally, there was a Bryan Bullington sighting

He started the second game of a doubleheader tonight for the Indians against the Royals. He got shelled — 6 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks in 4.2 innings, including 3 homers. He did strike out 4.

by shayborg on Sep 13, 2008 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

No go.

Talk about efficient

Capps has thrown 10 pitches in two innings…

by shayborg on Sep 13, 2008 10:18 PM EDT reply actions

yeah

he should be able to go at least one more if we need to

by poorboywilly on Sep 13, 2008 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Why not leave in Capps?

He’s barely thrown any pitches and would have been due up first next inning…

by shayborg on Sep 13, 2008 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

true

he is coming back off shoulder bursitis, no point in making him work too hard…
on the other hand…it’s only 10 pitches so far…

by poorboywilly on Sep 13, 2008 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

oh man

LaRoche has been putting in some gems lately

by poorboywilly on Sep 13, 2008 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, we caught a break

They call a hit and run and Hansen throws one way out of the zone so Ryan can’t make contact. Doumit throws out Ludwick easily.

by shayborg on Sep 13, 2008 10:47 PM EDT reply actions

There was nooooooooooooo doubt about it!!!

He hit it hard enough that even Mario could score from first!

A determined at-bat.

This would be an epic if the Pirates were in a pennant race. Or if MLB did relegation.
